Party Anthems

So on Wednesday night I'm going to a party/club night thing with a rather cool gimmick: everyone is supposed to bring their favourite 'party' anthem, and all of them will then be played in one set (I doubt there'll be much Abba though, ain't that kind of party...). The one that gets the crowd going most will win a prize (how they'll judge this is beyond me).

Now, this strikes me as a fantastic idea, so I wondered what one song everyone here would bring. I *think* that mine is going to be (although I may change my mind):

Method Man - 'Release Yo' Delf'

You?

De Selby
11:18 / 10.12.01
oooh

Jungle Brothers - Jungle Brother (Aphrodite remix)

nothing like a jump-up remix of a hiphop tune to get the party pumping.

dunno who did it, but 'your disco needs you'; very cliched, 70s, gay, basically, but funny too, would have me bopping at my office party.

Bear
11:52 / 10.12.01
I think my choices would be pretty cheesy too, but good when drunk...

Oasis - Cigaretess and Alcohol
Underworld - Born Slippy
House of Pain - Jump Around
oh yeah and Neil Diamond - Rinestone Cowboy (long story )..

They would cheer me up at a party

Dave Clarke:

Red 2

It rocks.

Techno Anthem!!!!

Matthew Fluxington
12:48 / 10.12.01
"Tell You (Today)" by Loose Joints.

among many, many, many others...

Depends on your 'crowd' really, doesn't it?

I've got tons, depending on who Iid be playing them to.

I Am The Resurrection by the Stone Roses
Super Sharp Shooter by DJ Zinc
Fire Up The Shoesaw by Lionrock
I Can't Turn You Loose By Otis Redding
Killing In The Name Of By Rage Against the Machine
Higher State of Consciousness by Josh Wink
and Bond Street by Burt Bacharach*

are all class party tunes, depending on who your crowd is.

But if I am my own one man party, I'm picking 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God by The Pogues.

And I'm not even going to see them live, for Kirsty McColl reasons. (I'll be drunk, I'll get maudlin if they play Fairytale of New York, or if they don't, and it won't be nice either way.....)

*You may know this as the Benny Hill theme tune. Try it, always gets a party ...interesting.

or as by stevie wonder. or funky kingston by toots & the maytals. or, if ya wanna go harder, maybe moaner by underworld. i've had pretty much spiritual dancefloor experiences to all of the above.

This is a crap choice in some ways, not that I don't like it, but since I know nothing about the kind of people who are going to be at the party it seems apt - Timo Maas's Doom's Night remix.

I like your style! Nice choice.

I would choose

Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb

or

Stakker Humanoid

Well clearly, right now, the one that's an absolute solid gold guaranteed mash up is Ante Up. But I'd never bring that as my one tune as it's way too obvious. For my mates it'd definitely be Thirstin Howl - "Still livin with my moms" because they all know all the words and it always induces stupid miming behaviour. I'd be very, very tempted to bring Brisk - "Airhead" which is the absolute quintessential stupid, happy, over the top piss-taking happy hardcore record. But it has to be a very, er, up for it, party for it to work. For the late 20s jaded ex-raver crew it'd be Oceanic - "Insanity" for the crowd noises and huge drops.

But I'd be tempted to go for the drum 'n bass style too and bring, as my number one choice Shy FX - "The Chopper". I'd stick the fucker on on 33 so the intro sounds like a man on quaaludes "ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention pleeaasssse", let 8 bars of the monstrous, monstrous bassline drop then rewind the fucker, pump up to 45, cut the bass, and then release it 16 bars in.

Maybe not Lickle Fluffy Clouds, but HUMANOID??!!! Oh yes!!!

And that old jungle tune,
The Terrorist...

And Ragga Twins Spliff Head, The Ramones's Blitzkrieg Bop, and....

Fuck. Forgot the Ragga Twins. I'd go for "Lock Up" though.

Yeah, exactly: I'm tempted by all kinds of things like 'Where's Your Head At' by the Jaxx or Redman's 'Smash Sumthin', but I don't want to bring the same record as someone else...

Plus it's a Dazed and Confused party so I have to be a bit obscure.

So does nobody else want any raging guitar noise with their hip-hop an' techno?

Stooges - Search & Destroy. Obviously.

Yeah, I've already put my vote in for the Ramones. How about the Velvet's Underground's Rock & Roll. It grooves.

Dazed and Confused, eh?

You'll get full kudos points if you take Thin Lizzy - "Johnny the fox meets Jimmy the weed" particularly if you can name all the old school hip hop tunes that used the break...

Another good'n would be Breakestra - "Cramp your style" cos it starts out like it's going to be "Apache" but launches into a totally different groove instead four bars in.

Very cool party idea, basically, it's gonna be bugging me all day now.

The winner will be a record that was a big hit in the early 90s but is kind of forgotten about these days. Everybody there will be 23-30 and will dance hardest to something that reminds them of being 16. And something a little bit novelty.

Fuck it, take back everything.

Get the new Mystikal track - "Bouncin' Back".

JB has been reborn. Funk on a stick. There's no way they can not go mental.

I'm not bothered about the winning - obviously records played towards the end of the night stand a better chance...

Apparently it's the launch for a monthly event, Lyra, although I'm not sure if there'll be doing this every time... Still, no reason you can't steal the idea.

Ten to one some wanker brings an Andrew WK tune.

Haus about we all give each other a big lovely huggle?
11:31 / 11.12.01
Niiiiiiice.

How about Just Give 'em Whisky by Colourbox?

Or how about just givin' em Whisky? I hear she'll go to a party and take on all comers for a fee...

Oh, or Twenty Seconds to Comply by Silver Bullet? Archetypally shit party song.

Personally, I'd go for the Suga Bullet remix of "Lovelife" by Lush, because it's such a totally fucking random confluence of people.

Arf! Big up the youth club disco massive!

(This is in no way a piss take. But well, were my youth club discos really as cool as your raves?

Will you be talking about the Bassheads' 'Is There Anybody Out There', Felix's 'Don't You Want Me' and K Klass' Rythym Is A Mystery' in the same way?

Damn I'm Cool.

Oh and Riz - must have missed that techno and hip-hop Pogues album. Tho thinking about it, interesting idea...

"Some New Kinda Kick" by the Cramps.

Life is short
And filled with stuff
Don't know what for
Ain't had enough

For me, it was the birth of psychobilly. The guitars sound like chainsaws.

The last frenetic verse sort of fades out on this list of "kicks" Mr. Lux Interior has tried. It includes formaldehyde. And Drano hot shots.

Barring that, I'd go for another, more "party" oriented Cramps song - not the Zombie Dance, but "Rockin' Bones." Much slinkier, straight up rockabilly, with a zombified backing-vocal "chorus."

And when I die, dontcha bury me at all
Just lay my bones up against the wall
and above my bones let these words be seen:
"Here lie the bloody gears of a boppin' machine."

Justin Warfield - 'Fisherman's Grotto', or possibly... waitasecond... what the fuck am I talking about?

Public Enemy. 'You're Gonna Get Yours'. Quite clearly. Either that, or that Donna Summer song whose title seems determined to elude me... belbin - or whatever your name is this week - help me out...

Oooh, good one. It has to be the remix off Greatest Misses though.

"Y-
y-y-y-
you're gonna get yours!"

I've gone with my first choice. My flatmate is going with Ghostface Killah - 'Cherchez La Ghost', basically because I was playing the album after reading Flux' Wu-Tang discography - so we're going to look like a right pair of Wu fanboys. Which, to be fair, we kind of are.

Actually, for genuine good times music (best enjoyed poolside or at a beachfront tiki torch clambake):

Parties in the USA - Jonathan Richman

It's part lament to the loss of party culture, and partially a reignition of the same.

(to the same three chords as Louie, Louie):
we need more paaaaarties in the USA
More Little Latin Lupe Lou (come on, come on)
More haaaaaang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

It's one of those songs that makes you smile and want to do the twist.

Not "hip" in any way, but "Walk this way" by Aerosmith & Run DMC gets everyone moving after a certain point in the evening.
