Should I Burn My Skrewdriver Album?

Well?

i have skrewdriver's 'all skrewed up' album tucked away somewhere. i like it, musically it's very good and there's no white power shit on it. but i feel a little uncomfortable it being in my collection. should i keep this piece of musical history or trash it?

and while i'm on the subject, i also have a couple of beautifully presented death in june albums.....

i guess the question is, does listening to it make you feel guilty? If so, get rid of it. Otherwise, don't worry.

look at it this way - if you're opposed to what they stand for, and listening to their music makes you feel good, then they're actually damaging the cause that they espouse with their music. So liking Skrewdriver becomes an anti-fascist act.

(Damn, that's a good one. I think I'll use that next time I go to Starbucks and argue that my frappucino is in fact an anti-capitalist statement...)

i say don't burn any records that someone else might dig. i am taking yr question literally because my housemate recentley destroyed all his records, smashed them all up because he said god told him to do it. it upset all of us, seeing dead vinyl all over the floor. i say, the charity shop is our friend.

I'd say keep it - the money which would go to the band has already changed hands, and they have already received it.

To pass the album on would, by now, serve no purpose other than to assuage your feelings of being uncomfortable. And perhaps the discomfort is kind of a reminder, a 'wake-up' call, even if you don't need one.

And unless I'm mistaken, didn't Skrewdriver split up when their singer died?

Jesus Christ! Why would God condone such a horrific act..

..unless the guy had a mint condition collection of Simply Red LPs or something, in which case Divine intervention might have been necessary..

dead vinyl - chilling!

interesting!

i bought the album secondhand to start with. i haven't listened to it in yonks because i don't have a record player. i have a box of vinyl i have problems getting rid of - the first black flag album cos it's on the roadrunner label, a couple of pylon lps.... geeky collector stuff, and the skrewdriver one sort of fits in there.

so i still don't know what to do. i don't really feel guilty, more vaguely hypocritical on some level. and i couldn't sell the thing - might complete some nazi's record collection....

Steam the label off that and something nice and fluffy by Bing Crosby. Swap 'em over. Then sell both in the name of discordian light entertainment.

I third it. I wonder if I've got any records I can do this with.

Well, first off, All Screwed Up was recorded a bit before Skrewdriver became a fascist band, before the whole Rock Against Communism thing and before they were even some sort skinheads. It has none of the above mentality of any of that stuff either. It's basically mid-paced rock'n'roll influenced punk, the type of music done far better by just about any American punk band from the same time period(Dead Boys, Heartbreakers, Richard Hell etc.).
But, then again, it is Skrewdriver, the band synonamous with White Power music, it almost doesn't matter that it was before they became White Power, basically, because they became White Power, if that makes sense. They were the band that spread the word more than any other band.
So it's a tough decision...I'll tell you what I did with my Skrewdriver shit: Sold it to some stupid skinhead (the non-racsist skinheads seem to like Skredriver more than the rascist ones 'round here) for $30, despite the fact that the cd was missing its case and was scratched quite a bit, bought Wild Irish Rose and spent the rest on ciggarettes.

SFD let me see if I understand you correctly and I apologise in advance for doing this and bringing in threads from elsewhere but you're pleased that So Solid Crew may not be allowed to tour, you're against Limp Bizkit on political grounds and you think we should boycott the Strokes because they are sexist? Is that right? Yet you own a Skrewdriver album?

I am at a loss for words.

Well, I think one of the interesting issues this raises is the fact if we hear an album/read a book/see a film and like it, and then become aware of the ideology of the artist or art, then pretty much all of us are much less likely to take a dim view of the art than if the reverse had happened - for example, I'm just never going to get into Dave Sim's Cerebus comic now, but if I'd started buying it at issue 1, would I have dropped it when the insane misogynic conspiracy theories kicked in? Who knows. One for the 'unsound art' thread, methinks...

Reid - you've managed to twist things a bit. i am 'against' the rapes that took place at a limp bizkit gig. i've been put off the strokes album because of the cover.

the whole point of the post was to say that i felt uncomfortable with owning something by a band that turned out to be facists. it doesn't make me a nazi to have the lp but it does make me feel a little hypocritical. i wondered what other people thought.

for the record, i've discussed this in another forum and i will be getting rid of the album.

I'm surprised by how many of you have Skrewdriver records AT ALL. Whatthefuckwereyouthinkingof!? TERRIBLE music, TERRIBLE lyrics, TERRIBLE politics. Burn, baby, burn... all of you.

Now, about those things you call 'books': dangerous purveyors of knowledge, burn at around Farenheit 451 I understand...

Why not re-mix it with some Public Enemy or Wu Tang vocals and reclaim turgid nazi rock for a brighter tomorrow? Or entertain the local kids with an impromptu game of frisbee?
If you can't disassociate the music from their later politics (and I can see how that could be difficult) why not allow something positive to arise from their negativity?

To go WAY back to your opening post, can I just say that I'm glad (in a weird kind of way) that I'm not the only one who feels uneasy about their Death In June albums... and yes, they ARE beautifully presented. And some of them are actually quite good (usually the ones with David Tibet or John Balance on, it has to be said). But still...

as for death in june: seemed to be an awful lot of posturing rather than 'serious' right-wingness. it was their hangers on, some of whom became 6th comm., who were fucking horrible racist bastards. one of em sprayed cs gas at me once. another ended up joining combat 18. luvverly people!
