So did I just sleep through the discussion on this?

ANy body here like them? Is this the bit where people tell me how otehr bands do the same thing only better? Are they coming over to England again?

i'd like them if the drumming was better and they ooomphed up their whole sound with a bass guitar, at least. jack white is super cool, but the band need more of a kick. the drumming irks me so much i can't listen to them for extended periods of time.

Um, it's cos my member number selfdestructed and Tom hasn't fixed it yet, so most of the threads I was in are unusable until further notice.

anyway, I agree with you about The White Stripes...that drummer is godawful...on album it's okay, but live...live, it was enough to make me hate that band for a long time before I heard the new LP. like, really deeply hate them.

"Fell In Love With A Girl" is such a rad song.

I like them, but I don't think they'ere quite as great as I did a few months back.

White Blood Cells, cool album that it is, doesn't stand up to well to repeated listening and (whisper it) .. some of Jack's songs are pretty weak.

I do have a tape of a live performance they did for John Peel though, and it's absolutely fantastic. Kicks more ass than a whole box full of ass-kicking machines.

It's telling though that a lot of their best songs are the cover versions - Jolene, Death Letter, Jack the Ripper..

I don't have a problem with the drumming - what's wrong with it for chrissake? It's noisy, it provides a beat..

Rizla, you clearly have not seen them live. or, if you have, she's improved a LOT.

I think Jack White would be best suited to playing in a band with a great bass player and a very Dave Grohl-esque drummer.

I think their best cover is "Your Southern Can Is Mine".

I just don't see the appeal. But I do quite like The Strokes.

Am I a bad person?

No, I feel exactly the same.

From the live performances I've seen of the band (admittedly on TV), he's either incredibly affected by TV playing, or his voice just isn't that good; whenever the "Hotel Yorba" single gets played on these kinda shows, his voice goes to shit.

That said, I didn't mind the album. It ain't a world-beater, though...

Well on the live performance I've got, he does some terrific wailing in a slightly irritating high pitched Frank Black sort of manner .. I don't know if that's what you mean by 'gone to shit' .. I think it's rather good.

Well, I meant more in a "sounds like his voice is breaking" kind of way. But maybe it's just that song; it irritates the fuck outta me.

I love "Hotel Yorba"; it's one of my favorite songs on the album. That being said, I also love "We're gonna be friends" which my girlfriend describes as sounding as if it was written by 'a more retarded Adam Sandler.'

There was a funny bit in SPIN magazine about folks either aligning themselves with the Strokes or the White Stripes for their retro rock hype band of choice... I guess I align myself with the Stripes...

I actually think the primitive hammering of the drums fits the music rather well.

The Strokes and The White Stripes? They seem to be the two most hyped bands of 2001; and I happen to like both and I don't feel guilty about it. I had a good time listening to both White Blood Cells and De Stijl; they were those kind of cds that I could put on repeat and listen again and again. I find difficult to judge the Stripes' live act, that kind of bands rarely come down here, but I know somebody that saw them in NYC and said that they were pretty wild. And I must admit that I like the drumming, but then again I should say that I have a soft spot for women playing the drums (uh-oh! sexist-o-meter has gone red)

[N.O.B.O.D.Y.] -i don't care if it's a green-haired lesser spotted gorilla playing the goddamn drums as long as it's good. it has nothing to do with the fact that the drummer is female, ok?
the drumming in the white strips is boring and repetitive and every time i hear them play i muse: how good would jack white sound with a good drummer and a bass player behind him?

No one has talked about Jack White's lyrics. I think they're great. Awesome in fact. It has been a long time since someone can take simple situation of heartbreak and love and write memorable, original lyrics about them. And even though he borrows some mannerisms from other artists, it still seems fresh and new. That's why I like the white stripes.

I know, I know...but I still have the soft spot.
