Say you want a Revolution

This quote from Courtney Taylor-Taylor, lead singer of The Dandy Warhols, caught my eye Made me think of Barbelith, for some reason.

"We run around the world, and we preach revolution," starts the singer, becoming increasingly animated. "And someday we're gonna be the ones in power, and they're gonna be the ones against the wall with blindfolds. And all the loudmouth, jerk-off, date-raping, fuckin' dickheads are gonna have to pretend they're elegant and cool and get good haircuts—or they're not gonna have any fuckin' friends. That's our fuckin' revolution."

Nice one.

Though the guy does talk a lot of shit RE: defending his mobile phone ad whoredom and making some pretty ill advised comments on the Afghanistan 'war'.

So after the Dandy Warhols' revolution, date rapists will be happily tolerated if they're 'elegant' and get good haircuts, but will be lined up against the wall and shot if they don't... along with everyone else who doesn't have a decent haircut, presumably?

"Don't you know that you can count me OUT..."

Like I needed another reason to despise the Dandy Warhols. If that quotation made you think of Barbelith, iconoplast, then either we here need a serious re-think, or you do.

woah thats harsh. I read it as the aforementioned date-rapists are gonna have to get with the revolution (and be cool and elegant and get nice do's) or they're out.

because we (meaning not just us revolutionaries) won't tolerate that sort of shit any more.

(Still think the dandy's are wankers though....)

Right. Because it's the bad haircuts and the inelegance and the lack of cool that's the problem, right? Not the date-rape per se.

I was gonna respond with something about irony, but it doesn't really matter does it?

if someone else had said this it would be fine, but because its from the Dandy Warhols its simply not cricket and just goes on to prove to you what you've always thought of them.

and I don't like the Dandy Warhols either... so fuck it.

No, because if it had been an intelligent statement I'd have said something along the lines of what Rizla said - or "I've always hated the Dandy Warhols, but that's actually pretty sharp". It's just that that bit about haircuts is so very them...

the idea was, pretty much, that "revolution" didn't mean a political change but a change in value systems. That CTT wants a world wherein cool haircuts and elegance are the currencies of the male personality, instead of sexual promiscuity and alcohol tolerance.

I love the band, I have to confess. But I spent too long hating bands for selling out - the Dandies sideswiped me by admitting from the get-go that they wanted to sell out, fucking with the record companies mercilessly, acting like a bunch of pretensious effetes, and then having the galling nerve to put on the single greatest rock show I'd ever seen. So maybe I'm just reading into Courtney's statement the gratitude I have towards him for restoring my faith in Rock and Roll.

C'mon Flyboy, it's not like the Dandy's quote is meant as a serious statement of political intent .. it's just a chucklesome comment aimed in roughly the right direction..

Put it away, it's clearly sexist.

well see, I never did in the first place.
It's a bit of a waste of effort seriously critique-ing the statements of a bunch of funny, major label haircut band dummies as if they're the head's of some underground resistance movement.

Of course they talk shit. They sound like the Doors playing the Birdie Song, what do you expect? At least the above quote makes clear that they hate the same elements of the music industry that we (or at least I) do..

..let's at least give them a gold star for trying to say something clever and get back to endlessly arguing about the political stance of bands that vaguely matter.

I have to say I like the Dandies, They talk shit, look well and play some nice relaxed tunes for summer driving.

What's the problem? Man you lot have defended Mis Carey's right to life for fuck sake.

Some times this place makes no sence.

they also did a cover of "I'm waiting for the man" which I've been trying to hear in any form....

I'm sure they destroyed it, but I'm prepared to be surprised.
