This has been brought up in one of the Conversation threads, by Elijah and JtB.

Is it time this forum was closed? Does it serve any useful purpose over and above that of the Switchboard?

I'm all for the closing of the 9/11 forum, it seems to have outgrown its usefulness, and everything that has been posted there for the past two months or so really is better suited to the Switchboard. It's just making the place more confusing, and is a bit of clutter.

We should certainly keep an archive of all the key threads from that forum, though.

In the upcoming relaunch of the board, I am attempting to find some way of incorporating 'sub' fora into the board in a way that works effectively. The idea will be to help people who are interested in fairly specific subjects enjoy the board more as well as building up a repository of information on certain subjects.

I'm not sure if it works as a concept - but one of the ideas would be to make the 9/11 board a 'sub' board of the Revolution. Think of it this way - we could have a nanotechnology 'section' in the Laboratory, a 'queer theory' section in the Head Shop, a grant morrison 'section' in comic books and maybe even a lists 'section' in Music.

I think this might make things work a little more effectively. But of course we'll have to see nearer to the time...

Little off topic, but will we need to create new user accounts after the relaunch?

That's a good idea, Tom. I hope that works out... It makes sense, it could maybe minimize the number of threads some people would have to wade through to get to the 'good stuff'...

Re: subfora, something to think about... a boss of mine had this philosophy, "a few fat folders is better than lots of skinny folders." Once I learned this, I've never looked back really... it saves time filing things, because you don't have to think which special folder the thing should go in; it saves time finding things, because there are fewer places to look; and when you're looking through the fat folder, you might suddenly see two pieces of paper that you didn't think had much to do with each other that now you see have everything to do with each other. Or in other words, ideas cross-pollinate better when they're not kept too much apart.

For what it's worth, that's from a once and future secretary's point of view...

You shouldn't have to reregister when you log-in, but you may be stuck with the same name forever! This may be the time to figure out which suit name you want to stick with for the foreseeable future!

Wait, you mean we may not be able to alter/change our screen name without re-registering in the future? That's horrible.

Can you try to avoid that?

I've become very fond of the constantly changing variable in my suit...

Just work on the principle that it won't be functionality built into the first version of the site.
