A note with an x instead of a ball is there to indicate rhythm for something that doesn't have a determined pitch. For instance, if you were going to transcribe a rap song, you'd use those little x-notes (I don't know the technical term) to show where the words fall in the bar, their relationship to the beat.
I don't know why they'd appear in piano music--I've only ever seen them used to indicate purely rhythmic elements: finger snaps, snare drum hits, scratching at guitar strings, spoken word... that sort of thing. |
