Please write articles for the Zine on Tom's front page, and topics for the Creation.

Thank you.

Umm... I think several articles have been sent to the zine yahoogroup. Were they rubbish or did I imagine them?

I have no idea. I just thought that with another thread about the end of the board, it was time to ask people to do something more interesting than hand-wringing.

Yeah, I know... it was just that Tom had had that article on Hawksmoor for two months or so before it actually went up (despite absence of changes to the zine in the intervening period) - so it may well be that there are several in the pipeline. We had a Magic article submitted today, for example.

I believe Tom still has some articles he's been sitting on.

I know he's had Shamanism part 2 for going on four months now.

I've been meaning to ask about the webzine. Has it died, or is it just waiting for the board revamp?

Can someone move this over to the Policy? Tom's more likely to see it there.

What's teh general process for articles, anyway? Is it pitch first, write later, or just write and send it off?

I always feel bad thinking about all of the articles I have half-written for the Zine.. how about this: I'll shape them up, asap, and submit them.

Well, as someone in the submissions reading group, I *know* there have been a few sent in that haven't been published. I think around five.

Can I just ask Todd's question again?

I don't think there is a general process. Whichever you're happiest with, I guess.

If the webzine is still going, I'd like to suggest a more active role for moderators in the article-seeking. For example, someone writing a piece for the Laboratory section could email it to grant to give it the once over. I'd be more than happy to cast my peepers over any Music submissions.

Currently, there's supposedly an editorial "group" - we all get the submissions mailed to (get this) submissions@barbelith.com, an address that's also been getting a fair amount of spam lately, sad to say.
Not sure who else is on there, but I try to read everything that comes through there and when I've got time, actually copy edit the buggers, turn hyphens into dashes and fix typos mostly, and then re-submit fixed format for Tom. Who's also on the list.

So from there, it's in his lap, which I'm imagining is full of money-making projects right now. Or else comely young groupies, attracted by the recent Blogger Award wins....

I think the zine group is composed of the moderators from the Revolution and Spectacle, isn't it? I know I'm on it... but I find it hard to judge or edit articles which are outside my remit or knowledge - & since there haven't been any subs for books or art I tend to keep quiet.

I'd like to do a sort of precis of some of the book club discussions, but with the current backlog it seems a little pointless...

There's a bit of a backlog on articles for the zine to be honest. If I had more time I'd update it more often.

I know what the day jobs make us do, yeah.

might be worth bearing in mind that in the current configuration, the zine is the first thing people hitting "barbelith.com" actually see, though.

i posted this at the Barb II thread, but i really think it's a good idea so i'm going to push for it. If moderators sometimes became like editors, we would both elevate discussion level and create more zine article much more efficiently.

quote:as far as the webzine / awesome thread interactions go, we ought to create a more handy duty for moderators / users to pluck informative threads (as often occur in laboratory, switchboard, magick) and rip them into finished products on the webzine. right now there are dozens of brilliant thoughts put together by a several people all over the recent threads. wouldnt it be nice if these clever thoughts were *slightly* cleaned up grammatically and stored on the front page as "news" or "theories"? i think the implication of permanence would elevate the quality of serious threads far more than would an arbitrary limit on posting.

i often look at brilliant threads and feel a sense of loss, in advance, knowing that these are just another conversation to be lost. wouldn't it be nice to turn our thoughts into truly archived items?
