Lou Reed: poor Lou, the greatest songwriter from the second half of the century hasn't done a decent thing since Magic and Loss
U2: once they were a crap band, then they resurrected as an intoxicated-by-an-overdose-of-media-baby band and i liked that; now they are back to the crap; and more awful than ever
Mercury Rev: maybe it's to soon to say they have gone downhill, but their All Is Dream is by far the worst they have ever recorded.
David Bowie: I don't think I should add anything. Anyone can notice why I put him here.

(I didn't like 'All is Dream' when I first heard it, but bear with it, it's now growing on me like a fungus).

some obvious ones:

Oasis - their ever-increasing shitness makes it increasingly difficult to admit to oneself that their first album still rocks like a .. great big rock.

Paul Weller - The Jam: kick-ass political punk pop band. 2 decades following The Jam: what the hell are you playing at? Go and die!

Yes. All those emotional aural soundscapes followed jarringly by insipid 80s MOR.

Oh, and I did actually mean Yes then. I wasn't just agreeing with Kit-Cat about the Manics.

I think the Manics have always been shite.

I think All Is Dream is the BEST thing Mercury Rev have ever recorded. Just felt it had to be said...

Dinosaur Jr./J. Mascis - Wicked emotional primal rock n' roll for 3 great albums (You're living all over me, Bug, and Green Mind), followed by over a decade of utter dreck. Give up. Even Kevin Shields can't save you now.

All is dream has some good stuff; for example the first song (I don't remember the name, The Dark is Rising maybe?). But it doesn't approach the beauty of Deserter's song; and of course it lacks the edge of "Yerself..." and "See You..." The worst thing of the disc is this new drummer they got, he always plays the same. I don't know, I also feel that it grows with each time I listen; but it doesn't grow too much; and I feel quite dissappointed with it.

It's certainly a pretty flawed record - but I reckon it's got it's own charm (Tides of the Moon and Hercules are wonderful).

I think, Deserters Songs aside, Mercury Rev have always been short on quality control - their first three albums all have both fantastic moments and other bits that could probably have remained on the cutting room floor. All is Dream just continues that tradition.

definitely the manics...
If I was Richey, and I was still alive, I'd kill myself over their latest album.

incidently, i misread the title of this thread as 'with a tattooed BEAR'. Ganesh's bear-obsession seems to be contagious...

A little late in reflection but...
...Soundgarden had an amazing vibe up until Bad Motor Finger
...Red Hot Chilipeppers post Blood Sugar Sex Magik
...Ministry post The Mind is a Terrible thing to Taste
I'm sure I'll find loads more, and lay them to rest here

I thought the last Manics album was a vast improvement on the one before that. Still not back on form though.

Although there was something distinctly heartbreaking about hearing Terry Wogan playing them on radio 2 this morning.

I mean, in 1994, who could have predicted that one.

I can't really say Kate Bush lost it. It's more like the world lost Kate Bush. She just...stopped.

(Some would say she "lost it" after Hounds of Love...ouch )

Duncan, respect for your choice of title for this thread. 'My Dark Star' is probably my favourite Suede song. But to be honest, I liked Head Music rather a lot. It's certainly an improvement of Coming Up, and even that had some great tunes on it.

But yes, the Manics. Oh dear. And Public Enemy have been a bit rubbish for the last decade.

Oh, and Madonna's lost it (AGAIN, and this time I don't think she's getting it back). Oh, and Prince.

The Ramones after 'End Of The Century'.

They still had the odd good tune, but the transition from revolutionary gutter-punk mega-stars to formulaic 80s arena rock - OUCH!

Mercury Rev: it's funny, I think All Is Dream is the best Rev album if by default: it's the first record they've done WITHOUT filler, and for that I am grateful. Deserter's Songs has just a few too many filler tracks for me to consider it solid, despite the fact that 7 out of the 8 proper songs are fantabulous. (sorry, I will never like "Goddess On A Hiway")

The two favourite bands of my teenage years: the Stone Roses (who just fell apart into a world of shit, although Ian Brown's making a bit of a comeback.)

And the Orb. WHY, God? wwwwWhy? They started tailing off after UFOrb; the live album was good, but a rehash, Pomme Fritz was dire, and even now there are two good tracks and nine bad ones per album.

I'd claim the complete opposite of just about every sentiment expressed in the above post.

different strokes and all that, I guess..
