THE SOUND OF MUSIC?

Now I know this thread will be probably be hailed as pretentious bollox but just recently I have realised there are certain sounds that appear in certain types of music that I tend to like more than the music itself.

They are;

1) I love the sound of jazz concerts where there is a light ripple of applause halfway through a song for no apparent reason.

Still with live jazz I love the sound of somebody inaudibly mumbling into a microphone before the start of a piece of music.

2) The sound of an orchestra tuning up.

3) The sound of fingers moving across the frets of a guitar.

These are sounds I'm always looking for in music and I'm delighted when I recieve.

Anyone else have similar thoughts or do I belong to the pretentious planet of poo?

No, you're not. Though sometimes the human effects - the unintended noises - can completely fuck up a piece, as much as they'd add to it at others. I love hearing vague movements in slow, live recordings, but there's a particular recording of Mahler's 6th that makes it sound like the conductor is tossing off in your left speaker. It's most disconcerting, particularly on headphones to hear this beautiful music shot through with some very dodgy wheezing.

I think I like the moments when you can tell different modes of attack on string instruments, best; like when a double bass goes from being lightly bowed to being crazily sawed; it humanises the instruments, I think.

i like listening to (usually early demos or live recordings) of bands that get off beat w/ each other, but just keep goin' until it clicks back it (doublely good if it's intneded)

i like songs that do stop starts and change tempo at a few of them

i also like it when the a brass section from a marching band cuts in loudy after remaining quiet for a bit, man that's an awesome sound

To bring this back to my rock n roll gutteral, I'm dreadfully fond of the noises very distorted guitars make when their owners take them off and unplug them.

I like the sound of breaking glass.

And if you don't believe me, why did you ask?

The crackle of aged vinyl. Can't beat it.

more basically, I love love love the sounds of trumpets, and old electric organs.

I love when things are recorded with heavy reverb.

I've got a bit of a thing for steel guitar. Clipped, staccato drum noises are always good, too. As are both deep, gut-rumbling bass and fuzzy, high-pitched crackles.
