Tell Me What I Like

First off, hi everybody.

This is I guess something of an introduction, I know this particular name and account has been used before but I am taking it over directly from the previous user. This is my first post....

What it comes down to is that I need new music to listen to.

I know very little about pop music. I need something smart and fast and spypunky-- something with paranoia and sitars and not too many references to how rich or drugged-out or famous the singer is.

There doesn't have to be a singer, for that matter.

I would prefer lyrics in English, but its not neccessary.

So please, give me suggestions. Tell me who I should listen to-- give me specific songs or just good artists.

What is Invisible music?

...What is Invisible music?

Did there not used to be a thread about an Invisibles soundtrack once? Or was that back when this place was called "the Nexus", I was the Golden Age grim, and Ganesh had an "a" at the end?

As to music: if you don't wangs about how drugged out the singer is, does that mean I can't urge you to listen to Primal Scream's last two albums?

"Spypunky" makes me think of the Propellerheads, wherever those brave souls may be these days. It also makes me think of the Morgan album that everyone went "feh" to last year but I have a soft spot for...

Um. Dunno what else to suggest. Electralane? Brendan Lynch's more dubby stuff? David Holmes?

I remember when I knew what all you cool kids were into. Those were the days...

My favourite band, the Kingpins, a ska ensemble out of Montreal have a really great gangster/spypunk sound coming out of many of their tracks. Same goes for the Datsons.

Spypunky? Get Duty Now For the Future by Devo. For their version of Secret Agent Man if nothing else. Plus its Devo. DEVO DEVO DEVO DEVO DEVO DEVO DEVO!

Spypunky, being defined, of course, by being music which most like that of spypunks.

I dunno.

Its one of those usefully meaningless categorizations that just means what it is.

Or maybe I just don't know what I mean. Either is possible.

Invisibles Soundtrack?...Hey I remember that thread.. I was there for that ..ah them were the good ol' daze....

Spypunk...punk music with that certain "je ne sais quoi" flashy, stylistic..James Bond meets the Ramones meets Austin Powers...think Kula Shaker's song S.O.S..then again what do I know...I still like Kula Shaker.

Some feedback (and thanks, each and everyone of y'all, for being so helpful, BTW).

moriarty-- I think I've pretty much gotten ska out of my system. It no longer interests me in general (there are exceptions).

I downloaded some Propellerheads-- I really dug, like, "History Repeating" immensely. No, in general they're pretty good. Tendency towards too much "dance".

Devo- Meh, was okay, didn't blow me away.

I also downloaded some Moby based on another friends recommendation and found it very variable.

Basically I'm looking for something complex, not repetitive like most electronic music.

I want Bach done for the 21st century.

That help?

If you can find it (and my copy's at home in Sydney in a box, dammit) then maybe you should get the two-CD album Eye Spy (official info here) by Drew Neumann. It's an "unofficial" soundtrack to Aeon Flux, which did a good line in paranoia. It's pretty good; a bit glacial. Maybe not as complex as you'd like, though it's not particularly repetitive. And lo! A shopping link appeared! It's the only one offered by the record label, so I guess that's yer lot.

Much as it pains me to do it, I'd have to suggest you go out and buy The Avalanches album, whose name escapes me, as it sounds right up your alley.

That sounds like a perfect description of Company Flow's "The Fire in Which You Burn."

"This rogue cherub got his own twisted agenda, catch that - Walkin on flatlines, you witness me grow WAY beyond corporate control - Let them eat cake, cause I introduce myself as a mistake - Slipped through the quills with a serrated barb stabbed, sharp in the gut - Now we can all become Lord of the Flies when this industry sees it's demise"

Yummy

If I am understanding you, I think you may really enjoy these records:

The Slits 'Cut'

The Monks 'Black Monk Time'

Pavement 'Slanted & Enchanted'

The Fall 'Hex Enduction Hour'

Clinic 'Internal Wrangler'

I think these records may have what yr looking for. Even still, they are all excellent, and well worth your listening time and your money.

Try Atari Teenage Riot. Punk and fighteningly hard dance mixed into the sound of thw world ending (well more like some weird germans jumping up and down and being scary).

Not Bach but invisable as fuck.

Hmmm Electronic but complex, you could try Aphex Twin, someone I've got into since people on here recommended him (thanks :-).
He ranges from mind expanding, to head thrashing through just plain odd.
Good tracks are polynomial-c, come to daddy, ageispolis and a driving favourite of mine, digeridoo.
