I hear Cannibal Ox are playing in Brighton in November.

Anyone know the exact date?

Anyone know the venue?

Anyone going?

Anyone know if they're playing London?

Anyone wanna talk about the group? Album of the year so far IMHO (but we've got ASMZ to contend with, yet). Prepare to tackle violent disagreement...

ASMZ?

I'll assume the album's good... since the cancellation of my London jaunt, I've got money to burn, and this is one record at the top of my wishlist. Gimme a week and I'll be able to comment on it.

They're playing the Barfly on Monday 8th October. Bad timing - won't be able to make it.

Dittoed. Not going further south, are they? Guess not...

And just to show I don't deserve my A in Geography: Where is Brighton?

Brighton.

I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re talking at cross-purposes.

I’m talking about Cannibal Ox, a rather brilliant rap group consisting of Vast Aire and Vordul Megilah – hence the thread title. You may be talking about A Silver Mount Zion, a paranoid yet revelatory string quartet plus guitar and piano, led by the mysterious Efrim Menuck.

I mentioned them only because I have a suspicion that their new album will be the best this year (better than Cannibal Ox, which is my current favourite).

If it’s ASMZ you’re after, we could start a new thread...

No, I couldn't work out what ASMZ meant. Though do know of the band.

I was talking about Cannibal Ox aswell, but still haven't got round to getting the album. Really, I can be relevant too! Just gimma a chance...

That said: Are ASMZ/Godspeed! coming here on tour? Ever?

You can read more about ASMZ and Godspeed...! here.

The Cannibal OX album is superb. El-P's production really steals the show: he's got an amazing ability to throw together disparate, chaotic sounds while still making a coherent whole. He sounds a bit like RZA's dirtiest tracks combined with Portishead's sci-fi/cult TV elements. However, unlike RZA, he's capable of programming drums. Vordul and Vast, while great lyricists, do not have great flows. It's the complemenatary nature of their idiosyncratic delivery and the atmosphere of the tracks that make the record so vibrant and stylised.

Hope you like it, Pin.

Actually, the rapping's better than I made out. Vordul's flow is better, much more street - sharper - while Vast is much looser, funnier and more esoteric.

which one's which? only one of them (+ dj) made it to last night's show and the result was actually pretty fucking dull. if i wanted to watch a man nod his head to a dj playing some records, i would've stayed at home with my own choice of sounds... he couldn't even impro freestylee except once, right at the very end, because he was being taunted and heckled by someone in the audience, and that was the best thing of the night. i'd've left earlier if it hadn't been so damn crowded i couldn't get out. oh yeah, the audience was about 95% male and the only other women there were with their boyfriends., and neither of the djs played any female rappers. i probably would've enjoyed it more if i'd been with other people....

That makes me sad. Still, it's one of those things that doesn't necessarily translate well to a live show if the audience is made up of dull-as-fuck trainspotters. Some anoraks just can't spot the funk.

I would have danced with you, Kooky.

no, peeps were dancing. well, as best they could as it was fire-hazardly cramped.

it's just that when CO came on, we had at least 20mins of watching a rapper mouth the words and nod his head to the records his dj played. no freestyling, not even some kind of rap karaoke. in other words: no spectacle and really bloody dull. annoyed that i paid over half the price of the album for something that much of a waste of time.

Don't you just hate it when recommendations don't go according to plan.

Got the record. It's good. Still, now I'm poor and will porbablly loose my job soon. Good going me!
