That's the one. There's more about it here (including a hefty transcript of the first bit):
http://fxw.de/rtner/under_milk_wood.htm

Richard Burton plays the 'First Voice' on the recording I've got. Judging by the web searches I did, it's a popular version and is still available in remastered form.

The Return Of Rothkoid
13:36 / 12.10.01
In a cheap-shop extravaganza, I just walked away with a £2 copy of the soundtrack to U-Turn, which features some ace tunes (like Peggy Lee's "It's A Good Day" and Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire") and a stack of Morricone-penned score for the film. An odd mix, but it works. Also in the soundtrack stakes, I snaffled Yann Tiersen's score for Amelie, which is alternately jaunty and wonderfully languid. Accordion, some old chansons, and some pianowork that sounds like it owes a lot to both Satie and Nyman - great stuff.

Though it doesn't count, because someone bought it for me, I recently came into ownership of Einstürzende Neubauten's Strategies Against Architecture III 2-CD set. Rarities, live and other tidbits, it's better-curated than the last release in that series, and has some lovely packaging to go with it. It begs to be played loud, and results in me doing an odd kabuki-styled dance around the office, singing in German.

Which can't be all bad.

argh, cheap record shops and HMV sales baaad.

on the bright side, have acquired (not all bot):

spriritualized - let it all come down. lovely.

one of those master cuts comps. - the electro one. fab if you haven't got the time or money to track down the 12"s

a nina simone comp. - gorgeous, her voice, floors me every time, and not having heard her for ages had forgotten how androgynous she can sound.

a slits album, name of which escapes me, but ace post-punk synth weirdness.

So Mr Rizla you have finally found Trout Mask replica.

When will you be ready to enter Orange Claw Hammer Karioke competitions?

Ooo yes. Got it today and it's wonderful. I don't know that I'd agree with the Godspeed... comparison, though. It's more Mogwai Meet Plone On A Beautiful Summer's Day. 'Cut Up Piano And Xylophone' and 'Long Singing' in particular are hypnotic therapy for tired minds.

OK.

Gerling - When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun, In spite of the unfortunate title, people will be raving like mad things about this (with a different album title, I suppose) in six months. Get it in from Australia and say you heard of them first.

Coda - There Is A Way To Fly. Yep. Their cover of Laurie Anderson's "Born, Never Asked" makes this.

Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift yr skinny fists.... It's alright I suppose.

They Might Be Giants - Mink Car. Good, not great tho', a shame...

Lamb s/t - well, it does have "Gorecki" on it.

The Cure Disintegration - OK, so I got this about only a decade after my teenage Cure phase.

Avalanches "Radio/Frontier Psychiatrist" single - already got the album, just to have a look at this video everyone's rabbiting on about, since I don't watch a real lot of music TV these days.

Well I've had a radio-session version of Orange Claw Hammer (where he performs it like a proper song) for quite a while now, so I know all the words.
The trick, so we are told, is to put particular emphasis on the Cherry Phosphate line.

Trout Mask Replica, though, I mean .. god lord .. it's too weird even for me. Takes on all comers for postion of 'most deranged piece of music ever recorded'.

If it wasn't 80 minutes long i might have cracked it by now - taking things step by step...

I heard them first, I'll have you know!
I'm a proud owner of their first album Children of Telepathic Experiencesand, 2 or 3 rather grand singles aside, it's a bit rubbish really.

What... (re Gerling?) Didn't really get into COTE, even though it's amusing in parts. Young Terrorists still has that indie vibe and goofy experimentalism, but with a stronger sense of direction and a goodly dose of bootywhang in parts.

But anyway, in the wake of the Avalanches, the faddist British Music Press may well put away it's usual bias towards anything antipodean and decide to get onto the myth of an Australian indie/dance hybrid, and latch onto anything that has that sound, a la the way everything French and filtered became hip about 97-98 with Daft Punk and Air. Then again, perhaps not. (I was also thinking Pnau as another contender in this, except they're very disco. Sambanova is good too, but you might decided you've heard that sort of thing before.)

I'll take that and see you: I remember them from before they had any releases, and they were playing Manning Bar at university. It's largely those memories that've stopped me going anywhere near their recorded output; they were fuckign abysmal.

Er.

To bring this back on-topic, I finally replaced my copy of Einstürzende Neubauten's Silence Is Sexy, which was nicked last time I was back in Sydney. It's good stuff; bit more subtle, but just as powerful as their earlier work.

And they play jet-turbines. More of that, please.

It's not showing up because of Haus' corruption, I think. Once Tom's fixed the profile, the posts that've been made in the interim should be visible. Including my abuse of Gerling bit. The updates show up in the update list, but just not on the thread yet, which is weird.

Better go fix that now. Ah well, nothing new... I'm just happy that my copy of drukqs is in the mail, if i'm lucky I'll get it on Friday.

You mean you can buy that album again? I remember that when I was home for Christmas, y'couldn't get a copy for love nor money because of legal action over one of the samples... or summat like that.

Dang. If only I had cash.

I too am looking forward to Drukqs.

New purchases:

Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upwards – The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band.

I wonder: do they reckon that they’ll move out from Godspeeds…!s shadow simply by having a longer name? The record itself continues the GYBE!/ASMZ trend of releasing records of increasing subtlety, with greater payoff on attentive/repeated listens. I haven’t put track names to music yet (the song titles are magnificent, as you’d expect: Take These Hands and Throw Them in the River, etc) but there’s one piece that’s burrowed its way inside my skull and refuses to dislodge. Haunting, hurting, hunted and defiant. Beats Rock Action at its own game (although all bets are off with My Father, My King).

Princess Superstar: Is

Good, solid hip hop. Funny and funky. Only listened to it once, a more complete description to follow. She’s worth recommending in general, though – Last of the Great Twentieth Century Composers is a great record, with lots of wit, sex and death defying pop toons. Brilliant rapper. Everyone compares her to Gonzalez – if anyone’s heard both, is this accurate?

Yep. Rereleased with three extra songs, with Designers Fucking Republic doing the new sleeve. Woo-ta!

Decided from the other thread I will have to get into SFA, and probably the new Crazy Duck Woman (err, Macy Gray) album too, after hearing a song from it today. She's got the funk.

I hit the 'new CDs at dicount prices' stall today and came away with:

Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements (stereolab fans - is this one any good?)
Patti Smith - Radio Ethiopia
Sonic Youth - Screaming Fields of Sonic Love

Haven't had time to listen to them yet.

It's certainly my favourite of theirs. I reckon it to be their meatiest, most confident sounding album. Beefy, motorik stuff with keyboards making dirty guitar-ish sounds. 'Crest' is pure joy. Many tunes as well ('Pack Yr Romantic Mind' is LUSH and lovely). A good choice, Sir!

If you like it and want to get more, I recommend 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup'. Alternatively, you might want to email me on some other, entirely unrelated subject.

To change the tone a bit for a moment and step away from the tube-clanging (though the subtlety of the jet-turbine playing wouldn't be out of place here...), HMV have a pretty good deal on in their sale at the moment: you can get a 5-CD pack with Mozart's Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro for £11. If you've not bought any, this is a pretty good place to start; remastered mono recordings from Aix-en-Provence in the '50s; some wonderful singing and a great sense of drama to the whole thing. Without being overblown in a Wagnerian sense, this set is great inasmuch as there's the lightness of the Figaro combined with the "I've fucked people over and will eventually be dragged down to hell - oh yeah, and I'm really bummed that I never reconciled myself with my dead father" life-is-shit mode that Don Giovanni does so well. Only downside is that the booklet's sparse; it only gives tracklistings, synopses and an interview in French - and mine sucks - but the libretto et al are kicking around online.

If you've not given it a chance, you maybe should consider this set. Wonderful introduction, given that the cheapest that single operas (in slightly dodgy performances, even) start at about £12 at the best of times...

Of course, this means I'm skipping lunch for a couple of days. But hey.

Gramofile's review section has a review on the set, if you're interested: search for "Mozart" under composer, "Giovanni" under work title, and "aix" under the free-text box. I tried to post the link and it fucked up as it's a database-specific one...

Yeah, what he said. The first time I listened to "Tone Burst" and then "Our Trinitone Blast", I thought, what the Hell? This after being in two minds over _Dots And Loops_ and really getting into _Cobra and Phases Group ..._, but I soon got into the whole album, and ended up going on a mad scour for everything else by Stereolab I could find.
(It's just about all good, including _Sound-Dust_, though that's nothing like _Transient Noise-Bursts..._)

Now it appears I'll be doing the similar obsessive catchup for Super Furry Animals. "No Sympathy" %$&@*$&!

I discovered last night that this was not, as I had previously assumed, a live album, but actually a greatest hits compilation, and thus i own nearly all the songs already.

What a fool I am..

The Stereolab's good though.

Im in the process of cleaning house (moving soon) and I just sold a ton of books and videos I didn't feel like packing. Then I took the money and bought more stuff I'll have to pack...

Radiohead: Amnesiac The big red library book by Donwood and Tchocky. From the used section. I already had the album but Im a sucker for packaging. Neat-o.

Saul Williams: Amethyst Rock Star. I wish this was spoken word like the disc that came with s(he). I like the lyrics but not the delivery. Slightly disappointing.

Nick Cave: Murder Ballads. I finally gave up looking for my old copy. If I ever find out who took it Nick will have to write another song... and O'Malley's Bar still makes me laugh.

Pixies: Complete B-Sides This one gets the most play so far. I'm rockin it like its '89 all over again. Its all old songs but the copyright says 2001 so its my pick for album of the year.

The Kinks: Are The Village Green Preservation Society. They're preserving the old ways from being abused and protecting the new ways for me and for you. What more can they do?

Big Star: #1Record/RadioCity. I was looking for Sister Lovers but they didn't have it so I had to settle for the first two albums. Just as well. Thanks for reminding me, Flux.

Sebastian Bach has to have the most wack house to ever appear on MTV's "Cribs". It's this little suburban shitbox crammed to the kills with Kiss Memorabilia and comic book shit. He made the point of mentioning to the camera that his comic collection was sealed in a fireproof box so that it would survive even if everything else burnt to the ground. Geek!

....

Check that, Redman's crib was the most pathetic. It was like a 4 room shack on Staten Island with a busted doorbell, passed out guys everywhere, a shoebox full of crumpled dollars (his "dollar box", that he says everyone should have), and a freezer full of Ms. Paul's frozen fish ("these taste real good when you cook 'em up on the George Foreman Grill," he said poignantly.)
