So I put on their album today to cheer me up a bit, completely forgetting about track 18..

"New York City's like a grave yard,
All the corpses love the way I play my guitar"

oops.

Amazing how the meaning of a song can change so completely overnight.

This was forwarded to an email list I'm from:

"In response to Tuesday's terrorist attacks, Clear Channel, the world's largest radio network, has sent out a list of some 150 "lyrically questionable" songs by everyone from the Animals to the Zombies to its radio stations, recommending that the songs not be aired. Some songs are overtly violent in their intent, but the majority simply contain
metaphorical language or narrative aspects that connect uncomfortably with the tragedy."

Here's the list:

Questionable songs

Some are obvious, but 'Obla-di Obla-da'??!

'Walk Like An Eygptian'?? 'Mack The Knife'?? 'Dancing in the Streets'??

What are those guys on..

..plus the fact that they seem to have put in loads of metal songs for no other reason than they're kinda noisy..

'Walk Like an Egyptian' - "Egypt? Hey, isn't that part of Arabland?"

'Mack the Knife' - Had me flummoxed for a bit, but knives were what the hijackers used.

'Dancing in the Streets' - as in Palestinians, maybe?

I don't get the inclusion of Alanis Moris-Minor's 'Ironic' though...

'And as the plane crashed down, he said "Well isn't this nice?"'

-From Ironic by Alanis Morrisette.

What I don't understand is what 'The boy from New York City' is doing on there. They may as well put every song with New York in it on the list...

Wow, and no mention of half the Radiohead catalog!

"the head of state has called for me by name * but i don't have time for him * it's gonna be a glorius day * i feel my luck could change * pull me out of the aircrash * pull me out of the lake * cause i'm your superhero * we are standing on the edge" - Lucky

"come out, come out * you think you'll drive me crazy * come out, come out * you and whose army? * you and your cronies * come out, come out * holy roman empire * come out if you think * come out if you think you can take us on* you can take on * you and your army * you and your cronies * you forget so easy * we ride tonight * we ride tonight, ghost horses" - You and Whose Army?

"you want me? fucking well come and find me -i'll be waiting with a gun and a pack of sandwiches and nothing - nothing. you want me? well come on and break the door down you want me? fucking come on and break the door down- I'm ready" Talk Show Host

"karma police, arrest this man... this is what you get when you mess with us"- Karma Police

"in the next world war, in a jackknifed juggernaut, I am born again" Airbag

"who?s in a bunker? * who?s in a bunker? * women and children first * and the children first * and the children * i?ll laugh until my head comes off * i?ll swallow till I burst * until I burst * until I * who?s in a bunker? * who?s in a bunker? * ihave seen too much * you haven?t seen enough * you haven?t seen it * i ?ll laugh until my head comes off * women and children first * and children first * and children * here I'm alive * everything all of the time * here I'm alive * everything all of the time * ice age coming * ice age coming * let me hear both sides * let me hear both sides * let me hear both * ice age coming * ice age coming * throw it in the fire * throw me in the fire * throw me on the * We?re not scare mongering * this is really happening * happening * we?re not scare mongering * this is really happening * happening * mobiles squirking * mobiles chirping * take the money and then run * take the money and then run * take the money *here I'm alive and everything all of the time*" -Idioteque

I mean, REALLY!

I disagree with that list--"Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2 is a *very appropriate* song. "I can't believe the news today...I can't close my eyes and make it go away...how long must we sing this song? tonight we must be as one..."

According to FuckedCompany's frontpage, included in the ban are songs about war, or the word "tuesday."

(same list, i'm sure..)

Reading the list, I think it's intended as a guide for mainstream radio only, the sort that usually just plays 'classics' from the 70s-90s. And, erm, metal.

'Bridge over Troubled Water'?

I really disagree with banning "It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I feel Fine)"... that song actually cheered me up quite a bit when I listened to it the other day, I'm sure it would do the same for lots of people.

That list says ALL Rage Against The Machine songs are to be banned. Why? As far as I know, not all their songs are about war or Tuesday...
But they are political. Hmmm.

Ambient forerunner and cut-up pioneer Karlheinz Stockhausen has just had a number of concerts banned after what was a rather ill-judged remark. Having said that, I'd like to hear the full interview before rushing to judgement on that one.

Popbitch's rather muted email last week said that Radio One were also 'banning' a list of songs.

[warning: rant ahead]

The thing is, radio stations et al claim that these 'bans' are not actually bans, just a suggestion of songs it would not be in good taste to play.
But they DO end up as de facto bans, and they lead to artists censoring their own work.
For instance, the last time this happened was the Gulf War.

My copy of Massive Attack's Blue Lines is credited to Massive, as the band changed their name, probably in a bid to stay on the airwaves.

The KLF cut gunfire from the start of 3am Eternal, Carter flipped Bloodsport for All to the B side of their single, the Happy Mondays changed the lyrics of Loose Fit (a reference to 'Going to Wipe Out Your Race' and (not suprisingly) Bomb the Base were affected as well.

Even worse, Giles Peterson lost his job at Jazz FM for playing 90 minutes of 'peace music' to show his opposition to the Gulf War.

And a number of songs on the situation in Ireland, such as Wings 'Give Ireland back to the Irish' and the Pogues' 'Birmingham Six' have also been banned at one point or another.

Index on Censorship did a whole book/magazine on this a few years ago which is will worth searching out. (Most of these examples are from it)

It really makes me fucking angry. I'll decide what offends me, thank you very much.

[rant over]

Well, to be fair, they do tend to concentrate rather heavily on such things as Bombs, Riots, War Against the Oppressor and Killing In The Name Of...

Oh, and pity poor Primal Scream, who last month revealed their new song "BOMB THE PENTAGON". 'No comment' they say.

Are you SERIOUS?

Wow.

Monica, it's very kind of you to say I can think for myself. Some days, people don't even believe I can think.

Flux, Rizla is indeed serious. It was reported in this week's NME, with Mani from the band's comment being something along the lines of 'Holy Shit! Oh, I'm so sorry!"

There's a reviwe of the gig they debuted it at here: Scream gig which they wish they hadn't played now, I'm betting.

Couldn't find the story about it being pulled on line, but I did find this: Strokes pull 'New York City Cops' from the US version of their debut album.

And here's an article on the music 'bans' after the attacks, which cites even Bob the Builder's Mambo Number Five as offensive:

It strikes me as deeply worrying that The Strokes pulled that song. Will Le Tigre get flak for playing 'Bang! Bang!' now?
