I’m probably going to get told off for this topic (as I imagine it’s been done to death previously, before I joined). Still, I’m listening to “Chill Out,” remembering why it’s one of my favourite albums, and it’s semi-topical (Jimmy Cauty’s new art venture, the possibility of an “unofficial” “new” KLF “live” album/bootleg). Bill Drummond is still one of my all-time heroes (pretty worrying, I know).

What did people think? Did the KLF turn your brown eyes blue? Did you find them dull or irritating? How bout the lives and works of the two protagonists (the sonic weapon story being my favourite rock and roll tale of all time)?

i fuckng LOVE the KLF.

as a rule, if i tell people about the burning a million quid caper and they say "fantastic", they are INSTANTLY my blood brother/soul sister. most people don't. 99% of people don't. they say, "burn a million quid? why? why would anyone do that? what - it was their own money? but they could've given it to charity..." etc etc etc etc

yeah...they're brilliant.

I heard a rumour that they were working with a legal loophole with the money burning. Apparently (never had this verified, don’t shoot the messenger) if there’s documentary evidence of the destruction of British currency, the bank is obliged to replace the lot. Which is partially why they filmed the whole enterprise. I say again: I have no idea whether this is true (I know jack about law, the loophole sounds unlikely to me, but I do semi-trust my source). Anyone able to tell us?

However, if it is true, they scammed everyone! Which actually makes me love them more, if that’s possible. Either way, it is a fantastic thing to do. I just hope you don’t have any diseases, senor autopilot.

the bbc documentary about the whole affair strongly hinted at the end that the whole thing was faked. the royal mint assessed the ashes to have contained at least £10k, but then again, it might have only have contained £10k. and it is true, the mint will replace destroyed notes, but [in my understanding] only in exchange for the remains of the destroyed note. NB. for anyone interested, tracking down a copy of that documentary (i think it was in the omnibus strand, from about a year or so after they burnt the cash) is highly recommended.

The KLF were aceness personified. That bit at the start of the 'White Room', in the intro to 'What Time is Love' with the crowd noises and the 'Mu Mu's... class. The Virgin megastore by Tottenham Court Road tube used to have a fairly good KLF selection, I'll have to go raid them sometime soon...

Yeah, and you've got the KLF's Spaced album as well, you sod.

I owe the KLF a lot in my 'cultural' upbringing - I became a big fan of theirs when I was pretty young and since then I have been introduced to tons of stuff through reading about them.

for instance: Illuminatus! and the entire Illuminati theory (Ghetto Blaster as the eye in the Pyramid? Nice...); Situationism; Ambient Music in general through Chill Out and their links with the Orb; Tammy Wynette ; and so, so much else.

Anyone who doesn't have a copy of 45 by Bill Drummond should get it; it is absolutely brilliant.

More info on the KLF and Drummond here: MANCENTRAL; Old site with 10-second sound samples, mainly sheep and trains, oddly enough; and a slightly out of date site here.

Huge fan, and seriously wish I'd taped the BBC film when it was on.
Have you seen the book about it ? As well as being full of stills from the film, it's also got the reactions of people who saw the film, one of whom is Alan Moore.

And I read recently that the recent 'Waiting for the Rights [sic] of Mu' CD is a bootleg, and that the KLF are talking about suing.

Which I understand, but it makes me smile at the irony...

I smell discordian fun. I bet it’s a stunt.

They don’t seem to be able to resist the pull of trashing the memory of what they created.
