Nothing illegal of course, but where can I get free mp3 downloads?
You know, just bits of songs.
Thanks

You mean to get software to play MP3s? I only have them on my Mac at work, as it's the only thing connected to a decent net link, so any of the sites listed here will be OK for the Mac OS.

The best player for MP3s that I've found on the Mac that's free is iTunes. Download it from Apple's homepage. It's rock, and because Apple put it out, it shouldn't fuck up like some others can. It also plays CDs, with CDDB connectivity.

In terms of peer-to-peer software, go to download.com and do a search for MacSatellite (which works with Audiogalaxy servers) or Limewire, which is a Gnutella client. Both work, and beat the shit out of Napster.

But hell. Epitonic is fucking awesome, if you've got a decent connection - I'm getting all sorts of official stuff there, legally. It's great.

i would have to suggest http://broke.pezdispenser.net/ for (legal) full albums in the mp3 format. that is, if you're into music "a bit off the beat."

Insound has a very large MP3 section full of many very good acts (though they do also have a lot of crappy emo and slowcore mixed in...)

These label sites have large mp3 libraries:
Matador USA, Matador Europe (different mp3s than the US label), Kitty Yo,Kill Rock Stars, and K

By the way, Cabaret Voltaire CAN be found on Audiogalaxy.

Getting the Satellite part of Audiogalaxy to work is near impossible, on a Mac. Still can't get it happening - timeouts galore. The client, MacSatellite, is available at download.com, but I still keep hoping that Audiogalaxy will release an *official* one sometime soon.

Uncle Retrospective, you might also consider downloading iGetter], which is a Mac equivalent of GetRight or other such software. Saves you the annoyance of discovering that a song's only half-downloaded - I used to find that iuma.com would give me lots of errors in that vein. It's in prerelease now, and will expire in a month or so, but it's a fucking godsend.

So people googling for "free MP3s" end up on Barbelith now? Restore the forum description's reference to Britney, add something about "free XXX hardcore" and we'd be top of Google for ever.

I think the spam problem is starting to actually become a problem. I shall attempt to investigate over the next week or so.

Tom> I think it's just certain threads. I'm going to put this one forwards for locking, because I seriously doubt that anybody's getting anything useful out of the vast majority of the recent posts and it seems to be actively encouraging spamtastic spam tactics.
