Mogwai: My Father, My King

Yes! The bastards are finally releasing it – October will be a happy month (new Aphex record, too). Has anyone heard Mogwai’s twenty minute Jewish opus yet? I looking forward to it.

My favourite track is still “Stanley Kubrick.” Great band, anyone else like them? Oh – anyone else going to see them at Brixton Academy (11th November)?

I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw them at the Empire, some months ago. They seemed to get revved up and then not really go anywhere - maybe just an album-only band, not that I've got any...

I was gonna start a thread in the meeting bit about Mogwai's London show (amongst other things).

As well as the single (if a 20 minute opus can really be called a single), the bastards are releasing two new records soon - firstly, a collection of all their old/rare tracks (Stanley Kubrik included) and secondly, a remix album (featuring Alec Empire doing some stuff and My Bloody Valentine remixing Mogwai Fear Satan(!!) amongst other things).

Ah, what a fate, lured to my financial doom by the capitalist mechanisms of Mogwai..

I’m convinced they’re re-releases. “Kicking a Dead Pig” (the remix album) has been available for years, and I’m sure I’ve seen the collected EPs on the HMV and Tower sites. I’ve got three of the EPs, so I’ll have to compare track listings before investing.

Every review and account I’ve heard says they’re better live than on album. Still, I’ve never seen them myself, so what do I know?

Rizla: do you have tickets? I’m ordering tomorrow. Hope they’re not sold out by then.

Personally, I don't trust any indie band who are sponsored by designer-label-athletics-apparel companies. there's just something sinister about it. adam

<innocent as a trusting child> What does 'indie' mean? </IAATC>

Why would anyone "trust" a band?

Just ordered my tickets today, and found out exactly how broke I am. Ouch. Still, can’t think of a better use for money I don’t have.

I've seen mogwai 3 times now and I'm going to see them next month. They rock live, I say them at glasto and they had 13 people on stage at one point.
Nice.
Haven't got rock action though, is it worth it?

The remix album Riz is on about is kicking a dead pig. It's not great, Alec Empires remix is dull and the kevin shields remix isn't on it, you have to buy it sepratly in a rip off sort of way, and it's a bit pants too.
I was upset. Stick to the origional versions.

Oh and the Mogwai song with the brass band is they're best song, burn prom queen I think.

I heard Mogwai played a show with Godspeed...! in which both bands played together for the encore. Accounts say it was beautiful/terrifying. One of my top “wish I’d been there” moments.

Why do I think I'm leaving getting tickets too late? I might even incite my credit-card owning father into action tonight. Maybe.

And may I just say that Rock Action (the only album of theirs own) is stunning. Finally got round to haring it a couple of nights ago. Sat in the dark at 1 in the morning with headphones on listening to it on vinyl. An amazing experiance... Should I ever pluck up the courage I'll do the same with my copy of Raise Your Skinny Fists... , a record that's been intimadating me since I got it in America (on Expressionless' wedding day, by way of comemoration. . And it had a post-it note on it saying "Buy this! It rules! - Love Mike". How could I resist?!)

So?

Have you listened to it at all yet?

Or are you just afraid of the Godspeed...! in the dark experience?

It's awesome. "Static" (CD1, Track 2) is utterly terrifying in this context. You'll love it.

I've listened to it, yeah, but it was a bit underwhelming. <aybe cos it was a hot, sunny day, someone phoned me in the middle of it and I was in the middle of reading Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy. So I figured I'd hold off 'til I could listen to it more carefully.

I heard the whole of My Father My King on the radio the day after 9/11 incidentally (presumably they were looking for long records so they wouldn't have to talk or something).

It was AMAZING. The ultimate Mogwai track, you might say. Lots of Young Team style noisy guitar passages, lots of Come On Die Young dark quiet bits and lots of Rock Action loveliness..

How exactly it's supposed to resemble a 'yiddish hymn' is beyond me, though.

Ooh, I’m looking forward to it even more now.

Pin: patience. It will work its way under your skin, taking up unearthly residence in your subconscious. When you least expect, at work, you will be overcome by sadness and strings. And you will start to prophesy...

Does anyone else have a copy of the 4 Satin EP on vinyl? It's mad good. I picked it up in '97 at a little record store in Oxford and have been a fan ever since.

WOW!

Don't want to start a new thread, but:

New Silver Mount Zion album imminent!

Am I sad to still get excited by this stuff?
