She is beautiful and talented... but I must ask the following question:

Do her lyrics have a deep underlying meaning, or is she on a discordian trip?

Both. She's a nutjob. I once, when horribly fucked, successfully rose to the challenge of interpreting the lyrics to 'Space Dog' on the spot. And they say it's nasty getting into a serial killer's head...

There's no excuse for her version of Smells Like Teen Spirit - no more pathos could possibly be rung from every single note.

Oh, I think there are loads of meaning in most of Tori's songs...it's just that she peppers a lot of it with acid trip poetry.

Space Dog is certainly on the obtuse side, for sure... armchair analysts, have a go at this:

quote:

Way to go Mr Microphone
Show us all what you don't know
Centuries secret societies
He's our commander still
Space Dog

So sure we were on something
Your feet are finally on the ground he said
So sure we were on something
Your feet are just on the ground girl

Rain and snow
Our engines have been receiving your eager call
There's Colonel Dirtyfishydishcloth
He'll distract her good
Don't worry so

And to the one you thought was on your side
She can't understand
She truly believes the lies

Lemon Pie
He's coming through
Our commander still Space Dog
Lines secure Space Dog

Deck the halls
I'm young again
I'm you again
Racing turtles
The grapefruit is winning
Seems i keep getting this story twisted
So where's Neil when you need him
Deck the halls
It's you again
It's you again
Somewhere someone must know the ending
Is she still pissing in the river now
Heard she's gone
Moved into a trailer park

So sure we were on something
[so sure those girls now are in the Navy]
Your feet finally on the ground he said
[those bombs our friends can't even hurt you now]
So sure we were on something
[and hold those tears cause they're still on your side]
You feet just on the ground girl
[don't hear the dogs barking]
So sure we were on something
[don't say you know we've gone Andromeda]
Your feet finally on the ground he said
[stood with those girls before]
So sure we were on something
[the hair in pairs it just got nasty]
Your feet are just on the ground
[and now those girls are gone]

Are these our only options?

Well, I took the lyrics to 'Crucify' to mean that we, both as individuals and as a society, subject our souls and bodies to such needless pitiful suffering every day as to be equivalent to the level of suffering we might undergo were we to, literally, nail ourselves to a large cross-shaped piece of wood and hang ourselves there until we died, i.e., crucified ourselves.

It's a metaphor.

Plus, the video was good, hey?

Mm. Tori.

Dichotomies (and, to a lesser extent, juxtapositions) run through Tori's work like bad seaside rock. Spirit/God. Girl/Whore/Mother. Self/Other. Man/Woman. Woman/Woman. Meaning/Meaningless. It's all part of the stew. Even the greatest lyricists in the world (cf. Dylan) just need a rhyme sometimes.

I think Tori is an artist who keeps the role of women very much at the forefront of her work. I recall a totally class I took back at University where we were discussing the effects and the politics of rape, and we had to listen some crap Toad the Wet Sprocket song followed by "Me & A Gun." Needless to say Tori kicked TtheWS's ass. I still generally have to skip that song if I'm listening to "Little Earthquakes." Too intense.

I even find the cult of Tori somewhat interesting. And I'm very excited about her covers album. Remaking "Bonnie & Clyde 97" is a way to comment on Eminem's misogyny and stand out as well.

That's a ref to Neil Gaiman, whom she's pals with.

Maybe it's about Delerium from Sandman.

If anyone wants a copy of Little Earthquakes let me know. A clear case of 'never buy the album because you liked the dance remix'.

Just downloaded 97 Bonnie & Clyde off Aimster.

GodDAMN! Tori can scare the living crap out of me...

Her cover is very, very, very, V-E-R-Y creepy.

She's good at that. Remember "Bells For Her" from 'Under The Pink'?

A friend came over yesterday (one of those friends who casually changes the discs on your CD player without asking) and happened to put on Snapping Turtle’s copy of “Under the Pink.” I chill went down my spine, horrible memories/feelings started to bubble, and I had to ask him to take it off immediately.

Real shame, as I used to love Tori. It seems that a lot of my feelings about female artists have been coloured by association with shitty memories of a particular relationship. Anyone got any tips on taking the power back?

You're a musician -- do bilious covers of those songs.

Works for me.

Oh, this is a wonderful idea, expressionless. Fancy covering Past The Mission? Male vocalist, too... that'd screw with the bad vibes context...
