Yeah, I bought The Strokes album, but hopefully I can persuade you all that it was cos I liked the singles rather than the hype..
It's bloody brilliant, obviously. Every song a classic and so on and so forth.. I've been playing it very loudly upon waking up every day this week.
(Engage pretentiousness)
The extreme hype & mainstream success is kind of suprising actually, since their music is extremely low-key.
It's excellently constructed and played and the feeling behind it seems pretty genuine, but it's a lot more subtle than most other top 40 rock.
There aren't many singalong choruses or big riffs or dancable tunes or overbearing emotion to draw the public in.
It relies more on minor chords, slight inflections in the singing and the interplay between the two guitars (I guess that's where the Television comparisons stem from).
I think a lot of people who bought it on the NME's word might be disappointed.
Another thing that's great about the Strokes - the songs actually get better and better the more you listen to them, which is a rare thing for a straight-up rock band. |
