Yeah, I did a checkoff on which records I owned on that list, and I had about 75% of them, and a significant chunk of the songs that made the singles category - though that only accounts for maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of the music that I heard/bought/acquired in 2001. It's just that I really strongly disagree that the ones which made it to the top were really all that special, significant, or even *good*. I maintain that the Bjork album is not very good at all, especially by her standards. Nearly everything was on a major label except for Malkmus, New Pornographers, Langley Schools (a reissue, no less), Moldy Peaches, The Shins, Low, and Fugazi.
The whole list is so incredibly bland... even the most adventurous music on that list is pretty tame. It's just so incredibly conservative, and obviously, very much dominated by the tastes of middle class white guys in their 30s and 40s.
I wish that they would just show some kind of dignity, and just not publish it anymore - many of the critics are already aware of the fact that this is little more than a pointless exercise in music crit conservatism. |
