My mate Cal and I are reworking the whole basis of the Barbelith Underground... The whole backend will change (at some point) and the whole way the site functions will alter. Not substantially, but various new features will be added, and various OTHER features will be redesigned.

While we're puzzling through it - has anyone got any suggestions?

er, we have a chatroom at delphi. why not keep that, but have a permalinky up to it to take away some of the latenight fluffchatter?

a photo album merely needs someone with server space and patience for uploading. could be a collaboration, and no, tom should not have the onus on him.

downloads of what?

and why do you want merchandise? (though cafepress is pretty nifty for that sorta thing)

personally, i don't like the interface at the delphi forums and would prefer anoth chat room style environment- but the offsite principal is good cos it should minimise bandwidth costs on tom...

name me a decent-looking chat-interface? there isn't one. really.

Nah - no plans for a chat-room at present. Too bloody difficult to organise, too horrific to maintain, and if you really want to chat, you can just download bloody AIM and do it properly. We're talking about other stuff - like how to make private messages better and more useful, how to encourage discussion in the non-conversation forums, how to weed out completely shite member posts, whether to combine the newsletter and the board, whether we want to change the colour scheme, what odds and ends of functionality on the site at the moment we DON'T need and just mess everything up... Etc.

Oh, don't change the colour scheme - I really like it. It's restful on the eyes.

Kit-Cat's right. The colour scheme's really good, and lots of people often post late at night.

Putting a link to the New World Order area on the top pull-down menu (there's already one on the bottom one) would be nice.

What exactly do you mean by this one Tom?

The Return Of Rothkoid

Tom; is there going to be a general tightening up of posting post-implementation? ie: minimisation of fluff, or some guidelines, or...?

Other than that, I wouldn't mind if those graemlins got fired out the hatch into the cold eternity of space. Fucking things. Of course, maybe they could be redesigned - but they annoy the hell out of me. Particularly the bloody wide-eyed one...

The Return Of Rothkoid
07:32 / 20.12.01
Oh - and is that idea of people being able to give threads karma points or whatnot (to point out the meaty, good ones to new users, or whatever) going to be implemented?

How much of the reworking are you planning on catering for increasing the ease of use for new users, and how much is for the benefit of frequent users? I'm just wondering what - board stability aside - the main goal of your reworkings is?

Yeeks. That's not meant to sound as arsey as it does. Oop.

Doesn't sound arsey at all, Rothkoid - don't worry. Ok - question addressing time...

1) "how to weed out completely shite member posts" what do I mean by that...

What I mean is that when we get an Elmo reappearing, producing COMPLETELY irrelevant board-fluff, there will be better mechanisms in place to deal with it.

One of these mechanisms will be to do with "Proposing" and "Seconding" actions in moderation. I'm proposing to give people slightly more moderation power, make a few more moderators and make everything a PROPOSAL / SECONDED pathway.

Basically, this would involve moderators of a forum being alerted if someone flagged a dubious or spam post. They would then be able to propose an action to it that wouldn't be implemented until another moderator agreed...

2) "Tom; is there going to be a general tightening up of posting post-implementation? ie: minimisation of fluff, or some guidelines, or...?"

Basically, no. But what IS going to be done is that I'm going to make the board easier to post cooler stuff to. At least this is the plan. Expect to see some of the functionality of the current board vanish, particularly around certain sections. There is no need, in my opinion, for people to be able to see 'todays active threads' for Conversation. It's a distraction from the interesting content that the board presents. So, people will be able to post and read in the conversation just as before, but the board will not facilitate viewing this as 'proper' content. It's social lubricant, that's all...

Moderation is going to be completely rethought and hopefully completely streamlined with everything much faster.

I'm also working out a way of improving private messaging, so that it becomes core to the experience of being on the board, and takes some of the strain of asking one person one question out of the public areas, while still faciliatig conversation...

All smileys / graemlins are being ejected as they are pointless. Every piece of functionality is being judged on how difficult it would be to code versus how much benefit it provides. So expect to see the end of much of the UBB code as well - a streamlined (for bandwidth reasons) topic review when posting etc. etc.

Karma points will no longer be a part of the reworked site - at least not initially. However, particularly irritating posters - and again, i'm talking about spammers here, will be marked in some way and people will be able to IF THEY WANT filter those messages out of their reading experience...

"How much of the reworking are you planning on catering for increasing the ease of use for new users, and how much is for the benefit of frequent users? I'm just wondering what - board stability aside - the main goal of your reworkings is?"

That's an interesting question and one that I hadn't really thought of - probably should have done.

The board will certainly have less confusing features - and hopefully this will improve the experience for new users, and make it simpler for them to understand what's going on. Also, many of these reworkings are about making the board a more stable environment, as you suggest.

But I suppose my main agenda is to have something that faciliates conversation and discussion. I'm not too interested in getting new people into the site, but I'm very interested in getting the conversation on the site running at top quality - and I'm going to try various ways of doing that.

With Cal's interest, we've got an amazing opportunity to make this place just work BETTER, and it's an opportunity that I want to take...

Hm.

I hate smileys.

But...they do allow people a little extra nuance. Although, that said, you can get the same thing with mood statements like [bored now] or [splenetic] or something.

Barbelith-specific XML tags, for Haus' huggles.

Kidding =P

I think that some kind of chat would be very handy. This doesn't have to be lith-hosted, cos there are zillions of free chat clients out there, as you point out... but it'd definitely be handy to have a chatroom link. Two reasons: firstly, sidelining bandwidth considerations for the Conversation. Secondly, to allow us to schedule chats with interesting characters... (if we can turn any up. And I think we could...)

Are you talking about something like what Plastic does? Because that sounds like a damn good idea.

THere's been general disagreement with the idea that we should use a karma based rating system for posts - but I'll try anything...

Would it be possible/feasible to extend the capabilites of the "ignore list" in the Profile Section from just PMs to filtering threads? There wouldn't be a karma system there.

Here's one. A button to embed an Barbeamazon link into posts. That way every time we recommend each other books we finance the site.

I have no idea about the code, or even if we're doing this already, but hey, it's an idea.

edit- plea time for me. any chance of barbelith for palm pilot?

Ooo and another one... a 'watch this thread' button... get a minipage with threads you're following... option to serve 'em up in reverse, most recent posts first... could end up saving bandwidth?

Apologies. This is unabashed work creation, Dilbert style.

works pretty well, too.

Can we have a link to today's active topics from everywhere?

And I don't feel great about the divisions of the spectacle, personally, but I don't really have any suggestions.

I absolutely second this, as I'm always quoting or reading books that I would like to recommend. I've hesitated from putting up Amazon links for this very reason. I'd really like Barbelith to get a piece of the action!

If you don't have a suggestion, then really there's not a lot I can do about it... Regarding the Amazon link thing... I think Cal and I have an idea about this, where you just type in as much of the name as you can remember, and hopefully it automatically searches Amazon with all affiliate information in place...

Has anyone considered java chat? Sometimes a bit prone to crashing, but the good thing is that it works off IRC servers, methinks - so anyone with mIRC or some such prog could use it _without_ having to load the page and download the applet.

Anyway - Webmaster Inc make something called Backpack which is their free chat app. They offer more tricksy versions for cash, but maybe it's worth considering.

I can repeat that in the short term there are no intentions to have a chat room as part of the Barbelith website. This may change, but not for a while, certainly...

It would be fairly easy, however, for any given Fiction Suit to create an IRC server for Barbelith.

Just FYI

I'm not sure whether it's just my computer settings or not, but, whenever I want to print out some discussion on the board, I have to copy it into a word processor and print from there. How difficult is it to make a printer friendly version of the page?

I was just going to ask about that. I think Tom put them there to highlight them or something, am I right?

But why those particular threads....they seem arbitrary to me, I mean, why those two threads in the headshop and not other currently active topics? Why, for example, is Words Create Reality somehow more noteworthy than Women's Space, Victim Culture, Un-Schooling, or Spiritualization of the Rave?

Just curious, because if these highlighted threads are going to be chosen so arbitrarily, I certainly don't approve of it.

They're starred for technical reasons - I've marked them for the guy who's working on the reworking so that he has something to play with that actually I also like as threads. They are not COMPLETELY arbitrary, but they should not be seen as highlighting all the good threads on the board.
