Who do you think is the most 'Barbelith' person in music today and why? A lot of this is going to depend on your personal view of the site itself, what it offers and the atmosphere it possesses. I'm not quite sure who I'd choose myself, although I can see reasons for selecting either of the above.

dj Vadim.
first, for his points of view on culture and its links to business.
and for his ability to find people with strong lyrics as guests on his tracks.
plus, the atmosphere is really dope (i think).
he's the one i like to see as a barbelither, for sure. as i really doubt he's got anything to see with magick or old Tom...

As we seem to be doing a lot of quoting, Hip Hop kids, can I dish up my own suggestion for the most Barbelithian (hip hop) artistes:
...can you tell what it is yet?

1989 the number another summer (get down)
Sound of the funky drummer
Music hittin' your heart cause I know you got sould
(Brothers and sisters, hey)
Listen if you're missin' y'all
Swingin' while I'm singin'
Givin' whatcha gettin'
Knowin' what I know
While the Black bands sweatin'
And the rhythm rhymes rollin'
Got to give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
Chorus
As the rhythm designed to bounce
What counts is that the rhymes
Designed to fill your mind
Now that you've realized the prides arrived
We got to pump the stuff to make us tough
from the heart
It's a start, a work of art
To revolutionize make a change nothin's strange
People, people we are the same
No we're not the same
Cause we don't know the game
What we need is awareness, we can't get careless
You say what is this?
My beloved lets get down to business
Mental self defensive fitness
(Yo) bum rush the show
You gotta go for what you know
Make everybody see, in order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say...
Fight the Power
Chorus
Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother fuck him and John Wayne
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps
Sample a look back you look and find
Nothing but rednecks for 400 years if you check
Don't worry be happy
Was a number one jam
Damn if I say it you can slap me right here
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Right on, c'mon
What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
To make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be
(Fight the Power)

...just ignore the anti-semitism...

yesssss ! whaouh, this track will be DOPE for long time....
and seing the attitude of mista chuck nowadays (mp3, his music on net exclusively and stuff...), i strongly believe that yes, indeed, we got some big barbelithers here

Yeeeeeeeaaah, boy... The Summerproof June agrees with me. Who else?

Well, I love Public Enemy. I love Chuck D. But Public Enemy have a very strong political focus. They're tough, uncompromising, and focused largely on a couple of single political issues (actively distancing themselves from things like feminism and gay rights, etc)... For better of for worse, that's not how I see Barbelith.

At a push you could say that Flav represents one aspect of Barbelith, Chuck another (and maybe Professor Griff another as well, eh? ).

But I think Automator gets pretty close... There's a wide range to what he does: some of it is political, some of it is surreal and astonishingly creative, some of it is just silly. That's Barbelith.

heck, you made the point...
i'm so focused on what they were at one time that it's hard to think at the fact that yes, indeed, to be deep on some subjects push you away from others. and even if economical/political ideas from PE are still huge for me, it's true that their social/humanism can be far better !

so i hope we've got only the first 2 around, uh...

We got a few Terminator X's from time to time as well (talk the talk, but don't walk the walk...).

I might stick a word in for Uncle George (Clinton that is) who's mad as two hatters in a rabbit or something, involved in fucking everything, likes a party, dresses like a fool, don't give two hoots for convention and makes the odd political statement as well.

Great guy, pity most of his musical output is fairly mediocre...

I think a lot of Sonic Youth stuff could be described as pretty 'Barbelithian', especially the Sister/Daydream Nation period, but then I bloody would wouldn't I?

and that's not exactly 'today' either, is it?

I'll agree with the Automator's nomination - Deltron 3030 has completely the right vibe.

Oh, and Primal Scream I guess, as Xtrmntr sounds more like the Invisbles that any record I've ever heard .. but having said that, it gets dumber and dumber with each listen. Top tunes, but it retrospect I think the sentiment is a little shallow.

I agree about PRML SCRM. When XTRMNTR came out, I couldn't get over it, it just blew me away for a solid three-four months span of time (during which I was lucky enough to see them live...wow! loudest gig of my life, for sure). But now I can't really bring myself to listen to it, and when I do, I feel like the magic is gone and I can only really see its faults, and a certain level of shallowness is one of them. The "politics" are very black and white, and I think that is a bit off-putting in retrospect.

Nevertheless, when that record came out there was a certain zeitgeist that they had tapped into perfectly, as least for me and some other people that I know, so hats off to that. It's a perfect 'pop' record in terms of being totally of the moment and ultimately sorta disposable.

Still, "Shoot Speed/Kill Light" "XTRMNTR" and "Accelarator" are classics, I'd say.

I'll second the notion that Sister/Daydream Nation era SY is very "Barbelith". Not so much what they've done since, though...

Yo, it's not like every thread in Barbelith is a classic...

So excuse me while I put my sunglasses on and second that suggestion.

I personally think that Vanishing Point is a much more 'Barbelith' album than XTRMNTR. It covers a far broader spectrum of styles, sounds more xctng and innovative yet still possesses the (fairly nebulous) political stance.

We're still talking about the past, though. Who embodies the spirit of the site now?

I hereby nominate one Mr. Bill Hicks (dec'd) for the title of Musical Barbelither of the Universe.

Think about it - Renaissance Bill...

Comedy/Social commentary/cathartic rage/random albums/stupid songs/karate opera - what, you need more?

How's about this for balls-out dedication - first live gig aged 13, last live gig aged 32 - how many gigs in between? Around 4200.
I reckon that's pretty Barbelith.

I'd also like to take a moment to say -

FUCK pancreatic cancer.
It robbed us all.

But, um, without wanting to detract from the greatness of old Bill, his primary medium was that of spoken word and, as such, he's, well, not a 'Barbelithian musician'.

Yeah, I guess - i see your point. He was the singer and guitarist with Marble Head Johnson, though, and did songs on some of his albums, and, and, and...

Sorry. I just love Bill.
