Alice In Chains: Them Bones. AAAH! AAAH! AAAH! AAAH! - I really have to listen to this one while driving really fast... just have to learn to drive first...

My favorite opening to a first song on an album is "Silent Kid" off of Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, for what it's worth.

The Golden Palominos, "The Animal Speaks," from the Visions of Excess disc: John Lydon/Johnny Rotten rips off a horrendous belch, which reverberates for several seconds, then the band enters in herky-jerky cacophony.

I've always been a fan of songs that enter with creepy, stalking basslines--Nick cave's "Do You Love Me (part 1)?," or the Smithereens' "Blood and Roses."

The Return Of Rothkoid
15:20 / 27.07.01
For me, I guess it'd be You Am I's "Can't Get Started". A thumping bass with some ominous import, then, a couple of bars later, some white-hot guitar on top. Yeahhhhh.

I'm also partial to the big chord smashes on the start of Rollins Band's "Low Self-Opinion", and, for some reason, the increasing urgency of "Cherub Rock"; it's kinda glorious, in an übergeek way.

Oh, and about a million other songs. Christ. The descending spookiness of Waits' "Shore Leave". The thunderclaps on "Tupelo". And the frenetic idiocy of Frenzal Rhomb's "Punch in the Face". A decent bassline, followed by a well-placed "Fuck!" before the band slack-arsedly kicks in. Genius.

Iggy's primal grunt at the start of Raw Power (track not album);

"UGH!" dum-da-dum-da-dum-dum-da..

Also on the Detroit garage trip, Kick Out the Jams by the MC5;

"Now it's time, Now's the time to.."

And that song from Pavement's Wowee Zowee (don't know any of the song titles on that album) that starts with;
[big sloppy bluesrock riff] "Aw, shit baby!"

I'm partial to Roni Size & Reprazent's Share the Fall off New Forms, where Dynamite takes the mike and sez:

"Ladies and Gentlemen...introducing to you...THE SOUND OF NOW!"

and the drums kick in... aw yeh.

It just occured to me that it could also be considered the end of Heroes, but it kicks major booty coming or going.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
19:08 / 27.07.01
Why, the beginning of "Time Bomb" by the Old 97's with its infectious high energy skiffle guitar sound.

Shit, I couldn't see that a mile away, Kali. Nope. No way.

For opening licks, the first couple of bars on the 'Mats' "I.O.U.",right before the band kicks in.

For opening words, the beginning of "Neat, Neat, Neat" where someone says "Is she really foing out with him?"

For opening sounds, the sound of a match igniting at the beginning of "Something Hot" by The Afghan Whigs. That & the beginning of Paul's Boutique where it just sloooooowly ebbs in. Talk about sexy.... "the Italian women.... to all the Jamaican girls...." Mmm-HHMMMM...

%And I totally can't believe nobody's mentioned the, like, Brilliant beginning of Def Leppard's "Rock Of Ages". Like, totally.%

That song is called "Half A Canyon", and you are very correct.

More great intros:

'Kill All Hippies' by Primal Scream.
And indeed 'Loaded' and 'Kowalski' too ... those cool movie samples get me everytime..

Speaking of which, 'Kasparov's Revenge' by the Lo-Fi Allstars. yeh.

Oh, and 'You Make Me Die' by Mudhoney:

"Am I really .. are you really .. DO WE EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER!?"

Actually, that's "New Rose." The Damned have a knack for ingenious intros, almost the whole album of Machine Gun Ettiquitte has a cool intro for the song; "Love Song" has the whole "Ladies and Gentlemen, how do" followed by them banging on their instruments before one of them shouting "hey Jack what's happenin'" and "Melody Lee" has that nice piano part.
I'm also a big fan of the opening for "Customer" by the Replacements: Sound guy: "Tape rolling." Paul: "Okay...I'minlovewithagirlthatworksinastore but I'm nothing but a customer!"
The Dead Milkmen's intro to "Bitchin' Camero" is hilarious, but far to long to put up here.
I also love Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz" intro.

Not only..

WHY ARE YOU SUCH A STUPID ASSHOLE? WOULD YOU REALLY LIKE TO KNOW?....etc

..intro to Plastic Surgery Disasters, mmmm.
Still tickles my conscience after all these years..

But Also..

Leader of the Pack by the Shangri-La's? .."Uh-huh!"

Depth Charge - "Use the Shaolin Buddha finger wisely .."

The Bonzo Dog Intro from "The Intro and the Outro" .. ie the whole track, a bit cheaty, "but I want you all to give a big hand for Adolf Hitler on Vibes ... hi Adolf.. looking very relaxed there .."

And of course Theme From Starsky and Hutch - no,not that one, the first one- yes, now altogether..

"Neeee neNeee neNee neNee neNee Neeee ..."

Evergreen.

Our Lady of The Two Towers
11:23 / 28.07.01
Pet Shop Boys- The Intro to 'Always on my Mind' on Introspective- soaring along the elctro canyons of pop! Or 'This must be the Place I Waited Years to Leave' off of Behaviour.

The KLF- 'What Time is Love' on the album, the original version before the Kopyright police got their hands on it... the rising crowd noize, the 'mu-mu' chanting...

The opening lick to R.E.M.'s "Begin the Begin", ahhh. Yes, they did rock at one stage.

Obvious:
I'm gettin' fed up of mentioning it in every list thread ever, but boy does 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' by Ministry have a great intro (&outro).

I also wholeheartedly condone all of The Humble Crab's choices too.

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

Brown Sugar - the Stones.

I've gotta admit I've always had a soft spot for the intro to "Sweetloaf" by the Butthole Surfers:

Little kid: "Daddy, what's regret?"
Dad: "Well, son, the funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret the things that you have done than to regret the things that you haven't done. Oh, and if you see your mother this weekend, be sure to tell her "SATAN!! SATAN!! SATAN!!"

Margin Wlaker! I love you! I've been trying to remember the name of that song for fucking ages!

Oh yeah, and The Velvet Underground - European Song has a pretty damn fine intro aswell

The Dead Kennedy's: Viva Las Vegas intro.

The previously mentioned Ministry: Jesus built my Hotrod.

Dead Milkmen: Lakeside Trailer Park intro.

I just may have to go listen to all three of those albums right now.

Personally, I think the best song title is "Everyday's a Party When You Love Jesus" by Entertainment.

Rizla cited Ministry, which reminds me, the intro for "Stigmata" is ace! sweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshPOOMPOOMPOOMPOOMsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshswees hsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshsweeshPOOMPOOMPOOMPOOM and then: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

“Shaolin Shadow Boxing... and the Wu-Tang Sword Style...

If what you say is true, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang could be dangerous...

Do you think your Wu-Tang sword can defeat me?

En-garde: I’ll let you try my Wu-Tang Style.”

Mutha-fucka!

Oh, yeah - how ‘bout the start of “Arc Arsenal” by At the Drive-In?

I prefer the start of 'Enfilade'.

"Mother Leopard, I have your cub.."

Ganesh
09:39 / 01.08.01
Off the top of my head, The Smiths' 'The Queen Is Dead' ("Take me back to dear old Bligh-tee...") and the gentle-guitary-suddenly-becoming-frantic beginning of Madonna's 'Ray of Light'.

Jack The Bodiless

In no particular order...

Smashing Pumpkins - ' Bullet With The Butterfly Wings'

'The world is a vampire...' - song cuts in. Perfect end credits-of-a-movie song.

Marillion - 'Between You And Me (Live)'

Mark's chopping keyboard effect (like the bleeding together of wah-wah guitar and Q-bert style scratching) instantly having people moving before the song's even started. Electric moment.

Rolling Stones - 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'

Are you all mental?! Why has no one mentioned the choir?! The gentle acoustic strumming intro?! Get thee all to a nunnery...

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - beginning of first album...

Lee Marvin-esque voice... 'The car is on fire, and there's no driver at the wheel...'

[b]The Cure[b] - 'HotHotHot!'

Bob's echoey, almost unintelligible falsetto "Sheeee... may be the most beautiful thing in the world to me" (I think - decoded for me by another fan on the net).

At risk of continuing the punk-rock-centric trend of this thread, I'm picking that Bratmobile song that starts with the singer screaming, "Admit it! Innocent little girls turn you on, don't they?", before the guitars start.

Regrettable Juvenilia
09:57 / 01.08.01
Ooh! In the same vein, the start of Bikini Kill's 'Carnival':

"This is a song about the seedy underbelly of the carnival... The part that only the kids know about. This is a song about sixteen year old girls giving carnies head for free ride and hits of pot... But I wanna go... yeah I wanna go...

I WANNA GO TO THE CARNIVAL!..."

etc.

Another favourite intro... samples dialogue from Freaks...

"We didn't lie to you, folks! We promised you living, breathing monstrosities! You point at them... laugh at them... but you could be even as they are! They did not ask to be brought into the world... but into the world they came! Their code is a law unto themselves! Offend one... and you offend them all..."

...for a song written specifically for and about the band's fans. Group hug!

Another vote for The Stones, but this time – ‘Paint it Black’.

The guitar slowly plucking out the main refrain from Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ but dropping down on the last note. And then the drums…

Practically anything by the Alabama 3:

Comrades. People of the world.

We ain’t got nothing to lose but our goddamn bourgeoisie blues.

Mr I. V. Lenin – the Lenin of Love – is gonna make you feel real good.

With a hit… Of socialism…

Straight in the mainline.

Or, of course, the whole starting speech from ‘Woke up this morning’:

And after three days of drinking with Larry Love I get me an inkling to go on home: so I’m walking down Coldharbour Lane…

Front 242 – ‘Happiness’ (especially from their 98 tour).

4 notes played on a synth, then repeated, then repeated faster - and faster - and faster. And then the bassline kicks in with rib-crunching pressure at some goddawful speed and there’s a female falsetto opera singer going over the top and, well… I leave it to your ample imaginations.
