Both the So Solid Crew and Strokes threads started by you seem to have vanished (and the Limp Bizkit one, now I look)... I'm assuming that the only way this could have happened is for you to delete them yourself (unless one of the moderators has gone mad) - just wondering why? It seems a real shame... they were some of the best discussions we've had in the Music forum in ages.

I was about to pose a similar question in my "weird fiction" thread in Books, cos all sfd's posts seem to have vanished...

Same thing in the Skating thread. I'm guessing they've been deleted.

Without having a go, though, I'd like to say that it's a bit shit to delete threads once they evolve past the initial post mark, y'know? Not being happy with how a conversation is going is a fact of life on Barbelith, and I think it's a bit of a shit thing to do to the people who've submitted lengthy posts to those conversations. And, as Flyboy says, these were some of the better threads in the place.

What happened?

I seem to recall someone else doing this once. Wiping out all traces of their virtual existence. If she's erasing all these different, unrelated threads, it must not be because of the content.

Maybe she's just sick of the place. Shame. I liked her. 360!

Yeah, but on those occasions there were reasons:

"No! My secret identity revealed!"

and

"You fuckers have sold out. I'm gonna take my McDonald's-fed arse to a more revolutionary board. Fuckers."

Are we sure the board didn't just crap out? I noticed yesterday that a thread somewhere had gone to shit. Can't remember which one though.

Innocent too.

Has SFD been mortally offended by something or someone and rode off into the sunset?

Because that would be a darn shame.

Mea possibly culpa for kinda accusing her of subconscious racism in the head shop.

Erk.

In which case, very very sorry - not meant in a vicious way, more in a "isn't it terrible how we all do this" kind of way...

Just wondering; circumstances of deletion aside, is this sort of thing worth addressing in a BarbeFaq? IE: at which point it becomes necessary to say "I'm gonna yank this thread in a day" before deleting a thread one has started?

I think it could help... not rules per se, but some kind of "best practice" example, perhaps?

Hmmm...if someone's upset enough to delete all their threads and all their posts in other threads, I'm not sure "best examples" will really be a priority.

Let's face it: We don't all live the same reality, we don't percieve the world in the same way and we aren't affected by the world in the same way. Usually this is a good thing, as this means we can all learn from one another. But sometimes it's not so nice when what's shared doesn't seem appreciated or seems willfully misunderstood in order to prove some intellectual point.

I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about what happened (especially since we don't really know what DID happen) – we are each responsible for our own feelings and actions. But if we keep respecting each other, and each other's views and experiences, perhaps we'll lose less threads.

Added to the Core as it's more of a 'policy' issue and could probably do with being discussed under those terms.

Well, not really a Policy thing, but an aside of sorts.

I've been thinking since this thread popped up about disposable fiction suits. Fiction suits that are created only for a set amount of time, at the end of which all trace of the suit is destroyed.

Hmmm, may be I just need to acctually do some work today?

Ierne: the fact that we don't share a common reality would seem to me more proof that maybe some kind of barbe-etiquette guide be drafted. IIRC, attempts at same earlier have failed because of the sprawling nature of it, but I do think that if people had to read a couple of basic ideas on smooth board function when they registered, then that'd be a good thing.

As far as wilfully misunderstood goes - I think that obviously it's ridiculous to try and "legislate" (if such a term can be used here) against it - surely that's a function of the differences you're citing. I also think that one person's perception of how they're posts are under-appreciated can be wildly at odds with what others think - many posts in the oft-circling barbelove threads would point to that.

rothkoid- just guessing but what I think Ierne is saying is it's just a thread, and while yes all the brain juice on this board is sort of common property, ultimately it's ephemeral- the people posting, on the other hand, are the real deal, and should come first. Anything important will doubtless come up again, next time around.
