Clandestine Saturday evening in music

Saturday night and, for various reasons, I'm alone in the house. Hadn't planned a big 'going out' session because we've been visiting my partner's sister, her husband and their totally-sussed-and-fabulous young neices.

Anyway, I'm here alone, my partner's gone to bed and I'm alone to play whatever I want: all those self-indulgent songs I know he woundn't 'get', but nothing so 'way-out' it'd wake him from sleep.

I've been playing a weird hotch-potch of albums and single tracks. Started out on Q magazine's 'Essential Drive' selection, with Ash's 'Burn Baby Burn', Stone Roses' 'She Bangs The Drums' and Feeder's 'Buck Rogers' (so far, so Popstarz), then changed to a mixture of Liza Minelli's 'Results' album, Missy Elliot's 'e So Addictive' and, bizarrely, Catatonia's last two albums - interspersed with loads of Black Box Recorder, Bjork and Robbie Williams (I really like the new one).

Which songs have (and please don't be hypothetical here, you pretentious sods) you played when you're pissed and alone(ish) in the house?

That Ash song is fOOking great, innit?

Recently my self-indulgent drunk-and-alone music has been mostly Radiohead, you'll be displeased to hear, Mr Nesh. Oh, and The Strokes 'Hard To Explain' for drunken bouncing around...

I love Radiohead. In its place. I'm afraid I'm on a major Smiths groove at present...

'Stiiiiiill iiiiiiill...'.

Etc.

Looking forward to meeting you, Flyboy; all the girlies say you're pretty fly, for a white guy. With a Morrisseyeque quiff (is it still there?)

See you in London sometime.

In its riiiiiiiight place? Sorry, bad joke...

The quiff remains the same, due to my stubborn unwillingness to frequent all but the cheapest hairdressers. And yes, 'twill be cool to meet the Elephant Man... I'll hold off shaving and gorge on pies especially...

(Note to self: stop rotting threads with ill=advised pachiderm flirting.)

Argh, you've made me want to dig out my copy of 'The Queen Is Dead' now.

"I never even knew what drrrrrugs were..."

<sucks stomach in, writes 'I [heart] Morrissey' in marker pen on unreliable abdomen>

'And if a ten-ton buuuusss crashes into ussss'

Sexually, Fly/Zen, you are so not my type (and there's the little problem of your being straight an' all) but yet... there's something about you...

<waits just long enough for Zen/Fly to incubate homoworries>

You gorgeous thing, you!

Mwah!

Regrettable Juvenilia
00:25 / 15.07.01
Sheesh, I don't know whether to feel rejected or threatened now...

Er yeah, music. Heard the new Bjork singl? Tis a thing of beauty...

Ganesh
00:33 / 15.07.01
'Fifteen minutes with you, o-oo-ooh, I wouldn't say no-o-oo'

Feel threatened. In a nice way.

<grins in a drunkenly lascivious way>

I reckon we should have a Barbelith outing to Popstarz (gay indie club). I'd really like that.

<starts to leer in a disconcertingly frozen manner>

'So please, please, please, let me, let me, let me get what I want... this time...'

Regrettable Juvenilia
00:38 / 15.07.01
Yeah, funnily enough I keep meaning to go there... a female friend of mine who's now in Paris kept trying to get me along. That's how someone else I know ended up in Boyz magazine...

Er, that's not WHY I want to go, obviously...

In terms of music and physical appearance, I reckon you'd be my ideal platonic hetero friend.

<grins in a threatening manner>

If I could control myself...

Regrettable Juvenilia
00:47 / 15.07.01
Then I could say "some of my best friends are gay"...

If you were unbearably naff, yes.

Regrettable Juvenilia
00:52 / 15.07.01
Tsk! Sarcasm speech marks needed? That WAS kind of the point... come on, I'm not that much a sad wannabe liberal type, am... wait, don't answer that...

Ganesh
00:56 / 15.07.01
Fucking hell, I know. I know I don't need to use %s with you, Zen/Fly, because I think we both know when we're being sarcastic/facetious. And I was being deeply facetious.

You sweet thing, you.

Regrettable Juvenilia
01:00 / 15.07.01
...Oh, right, actually that did occur to me just after I'd posted that...

<Heckler shouts: "Get a fucking chatroom!">

I'm going to have to turn in any minute, anyway...

But cos this is a music thread:

That new Gorillaz tune is ace.

"Get the cool... na na na na na... Get the cool shoeshine..."

Ganesh
01:07 / 15.07.01
Indeedy. I'd put the single on if it wasn't gonna completely derail my Internet access with its multimedia-scarey video-thingy.

Yeah, we're both gonna have to go to bed. I've got to get up in the morning and pump iron in a vain attempt to persuade my biceps they ought to expand. And all that.

'Where does my love lie. In the middle of nowhere...'

Marvin Gaye "What's Going On"

Depending on the mood I'm in:
Red House Painters : The first album. I keep all sharp objects out of my reach when i listen to this album.

69 : Desire. I've talked about this one before so I wont bore you with details.

Miles Davies : Kind Of Blue. Never can get over how good this album sounds.

Fengs for the Memory

Gasoline alley - Rod Stewart, quite fantastic in an unexpected - fuck me this is Rod Stewart kind of way. (wine drunk)
Birthday Party - greatest hits (whiskey and Vodka)
And for those moments when nothing seems to fit the mood, Ministry - The mind is a terrible thing to taste.

Good Taste..... is that the one with the even more depressing version of I am a Rock on.... I've got the fairground one as well.. can't remember what it's called but their both good midnight and a bottle wine as you read with just the reading lamp on albums.... only problem is I've only got them on vinyl and have to turn them over....or swap the records.....

gawd. such a familiar scenario. I listen to the stuff my partner doesn't get. or at least doesn't get in 'the right way' Und so:

The smiths - the queen is dead/meat is murder albums. on repeat.
Husker Du - warehouse songs and stories Sugar - The Slim (single)
Tindersticks - Curtains and the second album
Radiohead - all of the bends
Suede - the Drowners.
Stone Roses - Sally Cinamon/I wanna be adored/waterfall
various Billie Holiday & bessie smith comps
Talking heads - Heaven
My bloody valentine - Loveless
Kristen Hersh - sunny border blue
Happy Mondays - Step on, kinky afro/good day
Primal Scream - Screamadelica/Primal Scream albums
One Dove - Morning Dove White
Dot Allison - Afterglow

I'll stop now

(and I'm currently trying to drag a friend to popstarz to prove that, having figured out he's gay, it isn't all Heaven and Trade... haven't been for a couple of years so could be interesting...)

Our Lady of The Two Towers

Hmmm, lessee (every night is home alone night for me)...

Pet Shop Boys (they've just rereleased all the old albums with bonus music CDs and interview booklet, I wanted to get rid of my tapes and get the albums on CD anyway), anything pre-Discography,

That Gorillaz single, 'Here we go!' but the bonus CD-ROM is bobbins, a fun thing with 2-D (who's doing the voices anyway?) but then the non-animated video? So we have to watch it stream badly from Gorillaz.com? Wassup with that?

Indigo Girls- It was in a sale at the library. Listened to it a couple of times, not sure if I like them yet.

Nearly God- Poems. The last good thing Tricky did before his talent went AWOL for some time. Pretend that Martina isn't on it and that Tricky and Terry Hall are singing to each other and it's so much better.

Suede- Either of the first two albums. I don't need to explain this do I?

Third Eye Foundation- You Guys Kill Me. I don't need to explain this do I? Who else has done a song with sampled foghorns recently?

Portishead- I don't need... When's the third album coming out you slackers?

And then, at the end of the evening, to chear myself up, Morris Minor and the Motors 'Stutter-Rap'/'Captain Beaky and his Band'. Isn't the Internet wonderful? All I need is for someone to put up an MP3 of 'John Kettley is a Weatherman' that I don't have to Napster for, and my life will be complete.

As an asside (yeah, I klnow, the thread's been so on topic up til now... ): If you don't want the CD to fuck wit' your computer, hold down shift when you put it in, which kills the AutoRun thing on the CD, so it'll work like a nromal CD.

And the girl doesn't get any of my records (bloody cheesy '80's pop / trance music fan that she is... ), so put my whole collection here.

(Alternatively, right-click on an emoty space on your screen and turn Active Desktop off.)

In the wee small hours, I find myself listening to the Nick Drake threesome - especially Bryter Layter, mainly for the wondrous Northern Sky - or the Scott Walker threesome.

How and why those I feel closest to don't get these records is beyond me.

And for those moments when nothing seems to fit the mood, Ministry - The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste. – Ray Feng

Too Damn Right. (I tend to turn up the volume when I'm on my own, as there's no-one to whinge about the noize.) There's always room on my stereo for Ministry.

I also tend to listen to a lot of Moroccan music, Master Musicians of Joujouka and the like, when I'm home alone.

The Return Of Rothkoid
14:58 / 17.07.01
Sex or Silent Night by The Necks often get a workout when I'm up late. As does Julie London. As will some Mahler, on occasion, but always on headphones, except when I just can't stand Barbirolli's wheezing. Damn stereo remastering; makes it sound like the old codger's sneaking up on me. Hmm.

Also, Dirty Three's Ocean Songs. Or Morrissey's Vauxhall and I And a bit of Ministry, on occasion, too. Late nights and Al Jourgensen seem to go together so welll... almost as well as some Frenzal Rhomb when I'm feeling blue. Nothing will cheer me up faster than a goofpunk (but in a good way) song that has the chorus "All your friends think you're a fuckhead/all your friends think you're shit!/All your friends think you're a fuckhead/all your friends think you're shite...they're right..." in it.

Class.

That reminds me...Therapy? is also excellent listening for a night in with Messrs. Daniels, Power or Walker.

I can't recommend enough Kath Bloom's "Come Here". And Pearl Jam's I Got ID and "In My Tree". And Placebo "Without You I'm Nothing". And Radiohead's "Life In A Glass House". With loads of gin, vodka and orange juice.

Red Cross Iodized Salt
18:02 / 17.07.01
Pissed + alone in the house usually = maudlin me, so the stuff that gets played is often make-myself-feel-worse music...some self indulgent wallowing favorites include:

Belle and Sebastian - Slow Graffiti
Bjork - Bachelorette
Spiritualized - Shine a light
My Bloody Valentine - We have all the time in the world...Cupid Come and Sue is fine from Isn't Anything...most of Loveless
Boards of Canada - Various bits of Music has the right to children
Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun (I had to copy/paste that from their website in order to get the 'Ágætis' bit )
Rockers Hi-Fi - Going under (K&D Dub)
Rachel's - Handwriting
Roxy Music - More than this
Mira Calix - Sandstrings (BOC remix)
Anthony Shakir - Detroit state of mind
Serge Gainsbourg - Je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais
Shantel - Bass and several cars
Pet Shop Boys - Se a vida e (which I find to be really sad for some reason)
dEUS - Little Arithmetics

And way too much Nick Drake, esp. Fruit Tree and Day is Done.

Drunk and listening to music, well like Monkey (sentence I never thought I'd say #1122) it means miserable so.

The new Nick Cave album, it's a good cd but Warren Ellis's playing makes it a thing of beauty.

Deus. They are just so good. Worse Case if angry, In a Bar if very stoned and the ideal crash for thoes lighter indie moments.

David Grey if it's all going horrably wromg.

Oh, started listening to the Orb again. (thanks al, I will send it back)

At present, I'm having an extended Pet Shop Boys Moment. Half-hearted melancholy wigging out to 'Red Letter Day' and 'My October Symphony', and surprised that I've only just picked up on the Russkie vibe in PSB oevre.

Drunk and Pisshed? Hmmmm.

I s'pose I'd put on... Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits, The Best of the Supremes, part of The Handsome Boy Modelling School So....How's Your Girl?, State of Bengal, Visual Audio, The Smiths the Queen is Dead, in particular the title track and "Frankly Mr. Shankly" (and if I had Bona Drag I'd add "the last of the famous international playboys"), Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction and GNR LIVE, my new best friends The Donnas, Gorillaz Clint Eastwood, and maybe a little Iron Maiden to taste.

Oh, and some Joan Jett, and the Runaways, and old school Heart.
