Heard any particularly rockin' songs recently?

Rant about them here.

Bearsuit - Hey Charlie, Hey Chuck
Simply the most memorable, odd and likable record I've heard for ages. The first minute or so sounds like Belle & Sebastian singing a jaunty song about astronaut's dying of oxygen starvation, then it's suddenly crushed by a ridiculously distorted heavy metal powerchord guitar riff while a woman yells the song's title, and the next two minutes see a lot of hand clapping and Beach Boys vocal harmonies, a mariarchi trumpet solo and a chorus of "why did his head get so big?" .. simply exrtordinary..

Half Man Half Biscuit - New York Skiffle A couple of minutes of banjo & washboard driven flippery that sends everyone from the Velvet Underground to The Strokes crashing to the ground in flames.
Paraphrasing:
"Do you come from the East Village,
Do you dress up all in white?
Do you steal your brother's giro?,
Do you talk a load of shite?,
DOES YOUR HEROIN LOSE IT'S GLAMOUR ON THE BEDPOST OVERNIGHT?"

Roots Manuva - Witness the Fitness
If I may take a plunge into a genre that I still don't know a great deal about, I hereby declare that this is the absolute bomb. Takes the best bits of 'avant garde' hip hop and the best bits of 'street' hip hop and combines them in a very pleasant manner. Though I think he recorded it just before lunch cos he keeps talking about pints of bitter and cheese sandwiches..

The Strokes - Hard to Explain / New York City Cops
ok, the hype is just a bit excessive, but it can't alter the fact that these two songs absolutely. fucking. rule.

your turn..

Mmm... The Strokes. I'm still trying to find meself a copy of The Modern Age EP, but to no luck. Do have the single mentioned and by God it's good. Anyone see them on Top Of The Pops tonight (Horrible thought... )? Were they any good?

So... my songs that people should hear. Though you probablly already have.

Ikara Cult - Sink Venice
Don't take my word for it, take Rizla's aswell. This song rules. Now go find me a copy.

Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You
Not heard much from this album, but to my mind is easily better then Rock On Top and marginally better then Who's Got The Crack? (Yes, i've only heard those three songs.

Thee Hypnotic's "Heavy Liquid" is really cool in a kick-your-teeth-in-rock kind of way.

Do Your Thing - Basement Jaxx. Off their new album, this has to be the most annoyingly brilliant, brilliantly annoying, huge dumb grin of a song I've heard in ages. The sort of track that 50% of people will love, the other half hate with a passion.

With this in mind, I'm whacking it on my still-unfinished comp for the tape-swapping thread

Plus, I swear that if you listen closely enough to it, you can hear a nose flute in the background. Genius!

Just got the Le Tigre EP, From The Desk Of Mr Lady. So should you. Bits of it, such as 'They want us to make a symphony out of the sound of women swallowing their own tongues', remind me of nothing so much as Public Enemy at their best.

On a very different note, who is that bloody song by that goes "Baby, I something something something flowers / For a couple of hours"??? I like that too.

Oh, and while 'Hard To Explain' took a while to grow on me, I now adore the fucker. And 'New York City Cops' as well. Lovely boys. (The Strokes, that is, not the NYPD. Obviously.)

The song you mention is 'Daydream in Blue' by I Monster. (Unless you're listening to the original by some '70s German geezer, but I suppose that's fairly unlikely).

From The Desk of Mr.Lady is indeed excellent. Anyone who's received one of my recent mix tapes has got at least a bit of it.

Aaaaa - just missed The Strokes live! Instead managed to see Queens of the Stone Age. Very good.

Songs... "Bliss" by Muse.

Still enjoying 'I come to war' by Freddie Foxxx though it's a couple of months old now. Also 'The great live caper' by J Rawls and J Live is genius with a really infectious little looped vocal riff in the background that absolutely sticks in your head. And the fact that the track is about Xzibit and Snoop stealing all of J Live's rhymes is also pretty funny. I'm totally completely riding the Breakestra's collective dicks at the minute as well - utter genius, and the 'Cramp your style' single should be snapped up if you see it. On the same tip, if 30 years older, 'Funky 16 corners' by the Highlighters has been re-released by Stones Throw records in a nice little cut-out picture sleeve, which is sort of unneccessary for such an obviously outstanding record, but is a nice little extra...

Just wondering if anyone here's got hold of the Rephlex 'Braindance' album yet? It's a good mixture of the label's output, both old and new.

featured artists include: Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Leila, Baby Ford, Bogdan Raczynski, DMX Krew, Bochum Welt, Luke Vibert, Cylob, Muziq, The Gentle People.......

And at £5.99 for 16 tracks you can't go far wrong.

I really love the Strokes "The Modern Age" single too, but I find it odd how popular they are in the UK...I'm wondering what it is exactly about them that makes them stand out... other than killer songs, but that doesn't always work out that way.

I saw them open for GBV earlier this year, they were a lot of fun.

well, hey Pin, now that you've got the tapes I sent you, you've got on tune off "The Modern Age" and one more Moldy Peaches in yr possession. Did you ever check out OTHER MUSIC? They have both The Modern Age EP and the Moldy Peaches album for $5 a piece US dollars.

There's been a lot of things I've been listening to lately...I really like the O.M.U. album 'Improvising', which features this a-maz-ing psychedelic space rock instrumental version of "AMazing Grace" called "Lost & Found". Those with Real Audio can hear that song here, in the middle of this radio show on WFMU.

I also have been listening to a LOT of Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard, getting myself fired up for seeing them again in a couple weeks. I realize that GBV is a hard band for people to get into, what with their HUGE catalog, but trust me, it's so worth it. My love for Robert Pollard's songwriting is intense...songs I've been listening to a lot lately include "Submarine Teams" "Far Out Crops" "Whiskey Ships" "Alone, Stinking, and Unafraid", "Waved Out", "Girl Called Captain" "Get Under It", "Pivotal Film", "Skills Like This", "Frequent Weaver Who Burns" "Titus and Strident Wet Nurse" "Watch Me Jumpstart" and "Tight Globes". If anyone out there is interested in an intro-to-GBV tape, email me, I will send you one.

I've also recently fallen in love with Wu-Tang Clan's The W after a vacation from the Wu for the past few months...I got to a point where it was saturation overload for me, but now that album is fresh and new to me again. It sounds amazing at night, in the wee hours...

The new Squarepusher and Spring Heel Jack records are really nice too...

I just picked up the new Shellac LP, 1000 Hurts, it came in a box and it had a free cd of the album with it. Highly recommended listening. I have to force myself to take it off the record player to give the other records I just bought (Dickies -- Incredible Shrinking Dickies, Nation of Ulysses -- Plays Pretty for Baby, Make-Up -- Destination Love:Live) a chance. The first song, "A Prayer To God" is incredible: "To the one true God above/here is my prayer/not the first that you've heard/but the first I have written/not the first but those/were a long time ago/I've got two people here/and I want you to kill them." Genius.
The other records that I picked up, read above, are also quite good and I recommend them to everyone.

Her she can go quietly - by disease or a blow,
To the base of her neck, where her necklace is closed,
Where her garments come together, where I used to lay my face,
That's where you ought to kill her, in that particular place.

(Louder)
Him, just fucking kill him, I don't care if it hurts,
Yes I do, I want it to, fucking kill him - but first,
Make him cry like a woman - no particular woman,
Let him hold out, hope that someone or other might come.

Then fucking kill him, fucking kill him,
Kill him already, kill him,
Fucking kill him, fucking kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
(Repeat)

Brutal. I don't think the rest of the album manages to recover from such an amazing opening shot, but then, how could it hope to?

Fucking rules.

And also get the I Monster track. That also rules.

And Clontle, I've managed to get the Moldy Peaches album for £8 on Amazon, as well as the Modern Age single for £3. And Rizla, I've also got an order on the Ikara Colt single. Do I have your adress? Give it to me if I don't, and I'll send a copy your way 'n' all. 'Les you already have one...

I think soundwise, the whole album is rather brutal, actually.

That Shellac tune is some pretty haunting stuff, to be sure. "Brutal" is the word.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

The Bell Rays - "Let It Blast" and "Grand Fury." An L.A. band that some might call hardcore, if that term was still in vogue, but with Lisa Kekuala on vocals...She sounds like a young Tina Turner, only PISSED. "Stupid Fucking People" is one of the songs (on "Grand Fury," I think), the title of which gives you some idea of where they're coming from. She can sound very oldschool R&B one minute, and then just be SCREAMING the next. It feels like her voice should be totally incongruous with the rest of the band, but it works somehow.
On "Let it Blast" they sometimes sound like a 1967 garage band, then they switch gears and really do let it blast.

Gluecifer - "Tender is the Savage." I think they're from Norway. They're not quite punk. They're in that Turbo Negro kinda vein. Punkish in the "Social Distortion" neighborhood, but they do guitar harmonies and such. Plus they have the best names ever: Jon Average, Biff Malibu, Captain Poon, and Raldo Useless. And Danny Young, who's name is not so cool, but who's drumming is. Best lyric: "Well you can live your life on the common ground or you can strut your stuff to the idiot sound." Carve that on my stone, when I'm under it.

SIA SIA SIA SIA SIA SIA!!!!

She is SOOO amazing - a really warped fucked up soul voice from a white Aussie girl. (She did a couple of vocals on the Zero 7 album too).

Her debut album came out on Monday - check out the slow version of Hey Man (The Wookie remix - which is actually a rather good garage tune..... - is a bonus on the CD). It is completely addicitive.

Only bad thing is it doesnt come on vinyl!!!

In short - NME
The influence that magazine has on the nation's record buying is simply absurd. Even more absurd considering that no one in their right mind actually likes the NME..

Regrettable Juvenilia

I do. Sort of.

The NME has so much influence, Riz, because it's basically the only decent music publication left. [old git]Time was you were spoilt for choice...[/old git] It also has a good website, which helps - apparently these days the magazine is treated just as a promotional vehicle for the site, interestingly enough...

Recently Stumbled across "The Murder Song" by the Dukes of Hang-gliding.

It's a lovely mellow song and the dark lyrics are sung beautifully. Kind of Lo-fi guitar meets Radiohead sort of thing.

One of them's a mate of Dom Jolley as well... make of it what you will.

Great record, isn't it? Very excited by news of the new Aphex album, coming in October.

Is anyone else into Michael Fakesch?

Oh - every time I listen to Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein" it gets better. Beautiful album. As is Lift to Experience's "The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads."

Sorry: sense of Barbelith deja vu. I'm sure I've made this post before...

Oh, I dunno. The bit where he's yelling "BECAUSE THEY WERE SQUIRRELS!" comes fairly close, I think.

I haven't bought a copy of the disc yet, but I'm very tempted. Angry, angry young man.

The Rephlex disc has been tempting me for a while, too...

Laptop - The New You.

After the majesty of "Opening Credits", the album this is taken from is a little patchy, but I may just be being pissy becasue I already own most of the songs on it. Laconic, flat vocals on the nature of reinvention to a perkios beat. Niiiice.

The Tiny Clocks - Finding a Needle in a Squeeze.

Because ever since I lost my copy of it, I have had it bouncing around my head.

Randy - does this mean there is a new HMHB album out already?

Assuming that stands for Half Man Half Biscuit, they've got a new EP out called 'Editor's Recommendation'.
I don't own it, but John Peel's playing it like it's going to turn into pixie dust at midnight. Includes the should-be classic pub singalong 'The Singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see the Pope', the aforementioned 'New York Skiffle', 'Bob Wilson Anchorman' and presumably some other songs too.

Ha! I'd been languishing in my temple of old music for so long I forgot to look outside - but when I did - lo and behold, something good had arrived! Hark, hark the angels sing - look at me I am the Lizard King, would you like to come for a spin?

Hi kids. John Cougar Mellencamp here. I'd just like to take this opportunity to recommend all of my records. Go buy one today. They are good. You will like them. Or I will rip your eyes from your head and stick them up my butt like in that book Story of the Eye by Bastille. Then you will not see so good. And your life will suck and you will wish that you had bought my records like I said in the first place. Plus I have an art book for sale. It sucks but buy it too.

Pfffft.

Manu Chau (spelling?) is this amazing outfit from Mexico, combining synth bleeps and ex-pinball machine sounds with traitional mexican guitar music. Don't know the name of the album, but it's dedicated to the Zapatistas.

Dead Prez rock... heavy beats and political raps, with some really cheesy RnB backing vocal lines. And the new Spearhead also rocks a billion.
