The Rulez, here restated:
quote:The idea is simple: a compilation consisting of 20 songs... each track is chosen by a different person here.

Post one song, following on from the previous one (there'll probably be some problems involving 2 people posting at once, but we'll work it out). Explain why you've chosen that track if you like - but you don't have to, and there doesn't have to be a reason beyond "I like it".

....Since everyone has an equal share in this, please also refrain from posting "but that song SUCKS!" or "you've RUINED it!" messages. If you don't like the sound of a tape so far, you can always start a new one.

This is dedicated to all our exes, to be played alone in the car in those useless hours between sunset and sleep, or upon waking at 3 am, Monday morning, unable to face the idea of heading into the world when the alarm goes off in four hours.

Opening sample: Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, the fusty old man at the end saying, "There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact, it's all dark."

Track one: Codeine - D. Slow core, with jazz chords. Picture Black Flag singing about ex-girlfriends, then slow the record down to 16 rpm. And add a couple sevenths. Grinding, bleak, and heeeaaaavvvvy.
"D for effort. D for intent. D because you paid the rent.
D for dishes. F for floors. Can't make the grade anymore."

Song downloadable for $$ here.

30 second sample available
here.

morphine: i'm free now.

"slowcore with jazz chords"? well, sorta. saxaphone, drums and a two-string bass tuned to the same note. slow, chilled and slightly downbeat. has the guilt and the forward-looking emotion you have after a break-up:

quote:
I'm free now
Free to look out the window
Free to live my story
Free to sing along

quote:There's something going on that makes my guts ache inside
I got guilt I got fear I got regret
I'm just a panic stricken waste I'm such a jerk
I was honest I swear the last thing I want to do
Honest I swear the last thing I want to do
Is ever cause you pain

4.Psychic Hearts - Thurston Moore

How to describe this .. um .. similar structure to 'Schizophrenia'. Slow persistant beat thing, and the guitars are a lot more understated than the usual Sonic Youth noise.
Thurston puts on his coolest voice and goes through a long series of rhyming, almost rapped, lyrics about, um, y'know, teenage alienation and stuff.
Phrases that stand out include;

"your father he just fucked around, a little too much for his own good, I'd kill the bastard if I could"
"sadness is and sadness was, sadness will always be because.."
"kill all the boys with their fucked noise.."

Vague chorus of "My psychic hearts go out to you".

"Have You Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have)" by the Buzzcocks
An obvious one, really, but nothing can sum it up so perfectly after the girl of your dreams sleeps with half of the surrounding states.

Well, just cos of the name really, we're going to have to have:

Turntable Orchestra - "You're gonna miss me when I'm gone"

"un otra hombre? es un mendida!"
"It's a lie, except I saw you, this ain't no baseball game, honey, you don't get no second chance here..."

And launch into beautiful piano chords, real classic house stuff (yup this is '88 vintage) and a real chugging groove. Great vocals in a real Johnny Cash vein (yup country and house, soul brothers and they don't even know it) all about how she's going to regret letting this one go. Best thing Hippie Torales ever did.

Oh and it jars like fuck with all the previous tunes, but hey, we're crazy kids.

7. Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - 'Love Letter'

This one just kind of came into my head as I was reading this thread. Starts with minimal piano, and Nick describing the process of writing a letter to a lover with whom he's obviously had a bit of a tiff... "kiss the cold white envelope"... in fine traditional form, he starts talking to the letter, asking it to please bring her back to him, "losing her again is more than I can bear"... and then a bit later Warren Ellis' violin comes in and Nick sings "rain your kisses down on me, rain your kisses down in storms", and though it all stays very gentle, it's utterly devastating.... partly cos he knows it's all his fault: "said somethin' I did not mean to say, said somethin' I did not mean to say"...

For when you want to be with someone you can't be with.

8. Shane MacGowan: "The Song With No Name":

"Long years ago, I fell in love with a beauty proud & fair/So passionate were she & I, we made fire in the air/I loved her more than life itself, she loved me just the same/It broke my heart to think she'd part when she ended the affair"

"But I was brutal, I was ignorant, I was cruel, I was brash/I never gave a damn about the beauty that I smashed/No sadist I, I even found delight in making my love cry/Now I'd pray for a single kiss from her to be lashed and crucified"

"And now I fear this lady fair can ne'er more be mine/Long gone are nights in my lonely bed, all suffering and crying/And though I fear that through this life she'll call me only friend/Til I'm dead and buried in my grave, my love will never end"

"Go To Hell" by Nashville Pussy -- southern rock dirge about a man catching his wife cheating on him with his two best friends and being really upset about it:
Smile on her face
Dick in each hand
Goo runnin' down her chin
I slammed the door
Got my .44
Lit a ciggarette
Ain't had a chance to use this thing
'Bout the best I'll get

10. Ween: "I'll Miss You"

"It could rain for a thousand days
or something i don't know/
Look to the sun and we're having fun
beside the river flow/
You're doing this and you're doing that
workin' all the time/
Tonight you'll call me on the phone
you've got a worried mind"

"And when you leave
you'll go away,
gone to stay/
Don't feel so bad,
it was nice what we had
and you'll be glad

I'll miss you"

"There's a moon and it's bright tonight
the sun has gone away/
Stop the sweat and I'll feel alright
you know I like it this way/
You're packin' stuff for your big, big move
in just a couple of days/
You'll be off on you're big, big cruise
across the USA"

"And when you leave
you'll go away,
gone to stay/
Don't feel so bad,
it was nice what we had
and you'll be glad

I'll miss you"

I must now throw on Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend," which may be the only song I know of that is both incredibly sexy, creepy and scary at the same time. SO GOOD. From the desperate soulful wail of misery all the way to the end!

"If I was your girlfriend
Would you remember
To tell me all the things
You forgot
When I was your MAN?

Hey hey

When I was your man...

***
"Would you let me wash your hair?"
"Could I make you breakfast sometime?"
***

If I was your girlfriend
Would you let me dress you?
I mean, help you pick out your clothes
before we go out?
Not that you're helpless
But sometimes, sometimes those are the things
That really love's about

If I was your
one and only friend
Would you run to me
If somebody hurt you
Even if that somebody treatin' you
Was me?
Sometime I trip on how happy we could be...
PLEEEEHEEEEZE!!!!!!
***
"Is it really necessary for me to go out of the room just because you wanna undress?
We don't have to make children to make love.
And we don't need to make love to have an orgasm. Your body's what I'm all about. Can I see it? Why Not? If I was your girlfriend you would. Oh yeah, I think so..."

Fucking GREAT.

I'm going to have to throw out Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", from Jeff Buckley's album "Grace".

quote:
"i heard there was a secret chord
that david played and it pleased the lord
but you don't really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

hallelujah...

well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah

hallelujah...

baby i've been here before
i've seen this room and i've walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
i've seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...

well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

well, maybe there's a god above
but all i've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah..."

I just uncovered a stash of obscure Australian indie rock I collected when I was a teenager, so I'll follow Jeff with a song none of you have ever heard: Wish I Couldn't, by Sulk. Jangly guitars, beautifully awkward male/female vocals, and great understated lyrics:

It's me, it's not you,
I know that's such a bad excuse,
but what else can we do?
I wish I couldn't live without you,
but I can.

This is the tape where one of the few songs that can potentially make me cry goes. It's about more than just an ex. It's about everything like that, really. Ah, feck.

Elliott Smith: Waltz #2(XO)

...She appears composed,
so she is, I suppose,
Who can really tell?
She shows no emotion at all,
stares into space like a dead china doll

I'm never going to know you now
but i'm going to love you anyhow

After the crying song I suggest a song that fucking rocks: "Turn Up the Century" by The Makers:

why I must foresake you

Ah, X-O. I was just discussing how much I loved this entire album yesterday. About as close to Emo-Rock as I can get, and really only because the album has just so much bitterness in it. My favorite is "Baby Britain," however.

"Baby britain feels the best
Floating over a
Sea of vodka

****
For someone half as smart
You'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
I can't help until
You start

(Side 2, track) 6. Cat Power - 'Satisfaction'

It's a break-up song the way *she* does it... Cuts out the chorus. Tries to make some boy "baby, baby, baby come back...", and then the way she sings "can't you see - I'm on a losin' streak?" you can tell that something has gone badly wrong. Can't be with the one you wanna be with? Can't get no satisfaction, then.

Katell Keinig- THERE YOU GO.
She's got such a unique throaty voice, this is kinda like a female 'Love will tear us apart' and theres a really great eighties synthesisery whooshing sound in the middle

Eighties synth whooshes, eh?

Break ups, eh?

Well, there's really only one possible option.

A work of godlike genius. A towering acheivement. One of the greatest pop records ever. The greatest white soul singer ever.

It can only be...

The Communards - Don't leave me this way

But I wanna put it at the end of the tape, cos that's where it belongs really. The song that you jump around the room to, cos you're kind of enjoying the strong feelings of tragedy and self-pity by then, and, well, cos it's 'Don't leave me this way' apart from anything else.

Ive got it:

spearmint – flaming lips

they never told you at school
they never told you anything
that would be any use to you
not now
like how to be fair
and how to behave with someone
or how to get by
when your memories
all hurt so much
if you dont want this pain
you shouldnt fall in love
you knew the risk
you took the chance
you let it happen
if you dont want this pain
you shouldnt ever fall in love again
and all of your friends
said “go on son, get in there
youve got nothing to lose
at all”
they never said how youd pay
for every kiss with a year of regret
or how youd be left with a body
that remembers
everything

Originally by Sun House. Self-explanatory blues-punk racket.

Don't get much more of a break-up song than that.
