hm. can you give me a quick hint: are they more in the sad/miserable camp, or more in the happy/good times area?

If they are in the latter camp, I think I just might buy their record today if I can find it (which shouldn't be too hard given where I am, right? right?)

totally off topic: the live version of "Sin Taxi" over on Pavement Powered.com in the Denver 2001 Jicks show is fucking blowing me away. That I will likely see them rock this tonight is just a bit too much for me!

the avalanches for beginners:

gang of australians, led by australian DMC champion DJDexter - using more samples than any record i have ever heard- to produce the best, most melody-fuelled record i've heard in, quite literally, years.

the 'proper' album is 'since i left you' - and is mixed in from beginning to end. seriously: it's got more hooks than a butchers' warehouse.

Arses. Forgot all about The Avalanches. I reckon the album's excellent, although opinion around here has been divided (as with Daft Punk's Discovery).

Fairly accurate description.

A sample of the first track.

All the time I've spent here and I still can't do the hyperlinks properly...

It's cool that more than a few people are giving props to Electrelane.

I won't say I told you so.

Just got the Argument yesterday. I'm hoping it'll knock my joint number tens off the list.

Ooo, wait. I forgot Group Sounds - Rocket From The Crypt. Makes absolutely no new moves. Still rocks bells. Greased up, slicked back, leather trousered rawk. You hear me, Andrew WK? You wouldn't know rock if it came up and bit your bell-end off, you prat. Grrrrr.

How could I have forgotten The Avalanches?

And how could I have forgotten Missy Elliot? Get Ur Freak On, single of the year.

I can't take the Avalanches seriously, I just remember when they were a bunch of annoying white indie rockers playing awkwardly with turntables in dingy pubs. Then they found Dexta and now they're all hip -- too weird.

1. I've fallen in love with The Avalanches album. It's far exceeded by best expectations. Wow. It's so fun.

2. I've got the new Missy LP, but I'm not really a big fan of it. I do really deeply love the song "Old Skool Joint", though. That song is fantabulous. "Get Yur Freak On" actually annoys the hell out of me.

Man, I can't believe I forgot to mention the Destiny's Child 'Survivor' LP. There's some weak songs in there, like say, the title track - but there's some real gems too, like "Bootylicious" "Independent Women Part 2", "Emotions" "Happy Face" etc...

Have to give John Hudak and Jason Lescalleet's Figure 2 a mention - a fucking awesome improv piece, based on decay/delay/echo sounds. More amazing because it's edit-less.

Most of the others I dug have been mentioned already, but I have to also give big cheers to The TigerLillies' Circus Songs. Not as profane as others, but the best cover of "Send In The Clowns" I've heard...

God, can't believe I didn't mention Destiny's Child either... 'Bootylicious' is another single of the year, for sure.

Top 5 disposable pop singles:

1) "Lady Marmalade" - Someone finally made Christina Aguilera sound interesting. And made her look like a whorish poodle to boot.

2) Pink -New Single - not sure what this one is called, but it is brand new, incredibly infectious and smart alecky.

3) Missy Elliot - "Get your freak on" -- what I sing to myself in the morning before going to work.

4)Eve and Gwen Stefani - "Blow Ya Mind" - Inescapable beat and sassiness. Eve is a goddess

5) Destiny's Child -"Bootylicious"- no 'independent woman part 2', but entertaining nonetheless. Unfortunately, the term "bootylicious" has a shorter shelf life than "wazzup".

Biggest Pop Disappointments of 2001

1) Britney Spears -"i'm a slave for you" - Sorry, Flyboy and Flux, but this is barely a song at all. Monotonous beats and far, far too long. She's OVER. Nowhere close to her best work ("This is a song about a girl named Lucky")

2) Destiny's Child "Survivor" - why did they have to hop on the bandwagon with such a crappy song?

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Was Alan Moore & Tim Perkins' Highbury Working CD released this year? If so, it really deserves a mention here. It truly does get better with each listen.

the Avalanches album was released in 2000(here), but if we include that, then we can include
PJ Harvey - Stories From The City...
I bought this just for that song with Thom Yorke which got heaps of airplay. I then discovered the rest of the album... great stuff. "... the sweat on my skin and oh! this mess we're in..." That sigh is it. It explains everything.

oh and Squarepusher - Go Plastic
Tripped out beats, weird samples... a less organic feel than his previous work, with a more hyperactive mood and very few instruments... buts thats a good thing in this case.

I agree entirely with those other people who said
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Not as focused, but almost as good as Kid A with some bleak lyrics. Radiohead invoke a feeling that is like no other band. Despair at its finest.

Aphex Twin - Drukqs
This most remarkable thing about this album is that you know he isn't even trying. Good on its own merits. Although I'm curious as to where the classical was coming from...

oh and best 12 inch would have to be
Bad Company - Planet Dust
This is simply the track of 2001. Its hard yet subtle and sublime, reminding everyone just how good Bad Company are. And the flipsides good as well. mmmm....dark drum n bass....

oh and the worst track this year?

INXS v Tall Paul - Precious Heart
I think Tall Paul should quite simply be shot. The sooner the better. Worst dance remix ever.

Thanks, Moominstoat, for mentioning Bobby Conn. Glad I'm not the only one. I rock out to 'Winners' almost every day anymore...

Here we go:
Bobby Conn-The Golden Age
Alpha-The Impossible Thrill
Retsin-Cabin In The Woods
Tortoise-Standards
Radiohead-Amnesiac
Guided By Voices-Isolation Drills
Oval-Ovalcommers
Strokes-Is This It
Edith Frost-Wonder Wonder
Bjork-Vespertine
Spiritualized-Let It Come Down
Arab On Radar-Yahweh or the Highway

Have fun.

Oh, yeah, and a kick-ass year for reissues, what with Kleenex/LiLiput, the three Neu!'s and all of the previously OOP Blondie albums out. Rock yer socks off!
Arthur Sudnam
p.s. Yes, the above was a Tenacious D ref., and, as humorous as I find the album, it doesn't quite warrant 'best of the year' status for me...

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so! I hear this song every night at work and it makes my booty move. Guilty pleasure central! Now I wonder: should I buy the album...?

From what I've heard so far:

1- Let it Come Down by Spiritualized (Is Jason Pierce a mutant or something like that? EVERYTHING he does has been good since Spaceman 3)
2- Rings Around the World by SFA (Another superpowered band)
3- Dog in the Sand by Frank Black & The Catholics (Welcome back Frank!!!!!!!)
4- Is This It by The Strokes (It's an obvious choice isn't it? But these guys are too good to be true, i think that in Les Inrockuptibles someone said that they looked like they got together in a casting, because their looks, the singer voice and even their names where so perfect!)
5- Boom Boom Kid by Boom Boom Kid (This one is from Argentina, so many of you may not know it, but it's just great and I would feel I was cheating myself if I don't put it on the list)
6- Megaton Shotblast by De Facto (I just liked it)
7- Britney by Britney Spears (I'm having lots of fun listening to this one...It's even better than NSync's)

I look forward with anticipation to giving the new Rob Zombie longplayer a spin. Apart from buying Gorrilaz, I haven't bought any new music this year. Although fun, I wouldn't put it in any top ten (unless it was the 'last ten cds I bought'.

Generally, nothing I've heard this year has faintly interested me (and I've heard a lot doing duty management on radio).
No wonder I've retreated into the seventies with Sabbath and ACDC. Linkin Park? Please.

Also on the reissue front... I'd be much more excited about the rerelease of the early Buzzcocks albums if I hadn't just shelled out a ridiculous amount of money for the Product collection that compiles them all earlier this year.

James - Pleased to meet you.

Like all James albums, it contains a couple of songs which lift you from the gutter of life like your best friend after a maudlin night out and give you the will and courage to take on the next day with a strength of spirit you didn't know you had.

They make me feel like life is a fight I can win. I can think of no higher accolade.
