Good places to shop for music in Laaandaaan

My vote goes to Rough Trade (Neal's Yard, Covent Garden) because only there can you find all the weird shit on CD that, before, you were sure would only be released on vinyl.

But the definitive thumbs up goes to Selectadisc (Berwick St, Soho) cause it's soooo fucking cheap, with a wide selection of ace music, and excellent (which is always a good reason to vote for something). Got Roxy Music's Avalon, Lou Reed's Street Hassle, The Velvet Underground's Loaded for under 20 quid, I did........

Aaaah, the lunchbreak.....that glorious, golden hour where we spend all the bank's lovely money......

yeah, Selectadisc is the bee's knees, and all the other Berwick Street shops are worth a look if you've got spare time.

Also - Rythym Records in Camdem - great for US indie imports and vinyl stuff.

And <corporate whore> the big HMV on Oxford Street isn't too bad either </corporate whore>

That's the big HMV near the Plaza, not the other big HMV further up, near Bond St, yerse?

Don't sniff at Mr CD in Berwick St, either; sometimes there's fucking gems in their downstairs throw-outs section - I've picked up Aphex Twin, Dream City Film Club, Four Tet and Sleater-Kinney albums there for a fiver.

The Notting Hill Music Exchange series of shops are pretty good, also, if a little pricey. If you can stand not buying something right away and are content to hope and pray that it'll still be there in a week's time, they mark their CDs down a quid regularly. The downstairs cheapo sections are good, also.

Expensive? Selectadisc? If anyone knows anywhere cheaper to buy albums, I'll be amazed...

For vinyl:

"Release the groove" on Denman street has all the latest US import house and loads of UK garage as well.

"Smallfish" on Old Street specialises in electronica/idm of mindbogglingly obscure origins, but also has an excellent selection of underground hip hop. Also has quite a lot of cds in stock, if you're that way inclined.

"Mr Bongo" on Poland street, I hesitate to recommend as it has the snootiest, cuntiest staff I've ever encountered in a specialist record shop (and that's saying something) but it does have a good selection of US underground and UK hip hop.

Finally Jazzman Gerald runs a record stall at camden market which has the ill 45 selection of Jazzman 7" re-releases, new funk and various dusty grooves. A very dangerous place to visit as it's hard to leave with any money in your pockets whatsoever (if you're a 7" addict, that is).

I remember earlier this year going out shopping with a friend of mine who was visiting from Scotland, and he was on an insane record buying spree, if just cos of the fact that everything was so incredibly cheap compared to UK pricing... when he explained that the price of UK imports in the US tend to actually be LESS MONEY in the US than they are in the UK as domestic releases, that was when I started questioning whether I'd really want to ever live there...

Scarily, that is actually true.

The maddest bit is import vinyl - at current prices I pay the equivalent of $12 for a US 12" single.

I figured out that if I were to buy 60 records on a trip to New York, the money saved would pay for my plane fare, on average.
