There's been quite a few bands to come out of the Chicagoland area that I love: Pegboy, Naked Raygun, the Arrivals, Teenage Frames, Cheap Trick, the Nerves, DV8, etc. Right now my favorite local band is a tie, between the Mashers and the Goblins, both who are garage rock bands, yet don't sound exactly like the Makers or the Sonics, which is a feat in this day in age, for some reason. They both have an air of fun surrounding them; the Mashers usually play big punk rock shows and spend the whole show making fun of the punk rockers that go ("Hey, look, they guy who spent the longest on his hair was the first to leave the pit!"), the Goblins bring in a different crowd, they kind of have the hip/elite rock crowd mixed with idiot punk rockers such as myself (they declared all out war on this post rock band, Tourtoise, once, writing to every local zine talking about how much they sucked, and were assholes, and they think that Tourtoise were the bastards that robbed their house...) not to mention that the Goblins wear Mexican wrestling masks, bill themselves as family entertainment -- despite their song "Fuck the Bible" but they felt that really had to be said -- and their new album is of Misfits songs that they claim have never seen the light of day (including songs like "Abbot and Costello Meet the Wolfman") and are calling it Missing Fits. |
