they may or may not have made it big (yet!!!) but everytime they come back into town you scramble to see them

for me its mary prankster with a light baltiMoron accent and sultry vocals topped off by an amazingly fun stage presence and a damn sexy look - shes great on cd but theres nothing like her live

and yours?

It's hard to imagine bands from NYC being 'local', but mine is the animal collective, which includes Avey Tare, Panda Bear, The Geologist, and Deacon. They are actually relocated from Baltimore, MD, though...

they are playing Friday night, and I don't think I'll be able to go, and it sucks.

There's been quite a few bands to come out of the Chicagoland area that I love: Pegboy, Naked Raygun, the Arrivals, Teenage Frames, Cheap Trick, the Nerves, DV8, etc. Right now my favorite local band is a tie, between the Mashers and the Goblins, both who are garage rock bands, yet don't sound exactly like the Makers or the Sonics, which is a feat in this day in age, for some reason. They both have an air of fun surrounding them; the Mashers usually play big punk rock shows and spend the whole show making fun of the punk rockers that go ("Hey, look, they guy who spent the longest on his hair was the first to leave the pit!"), the Goblins bring in a different crowd, they kind of have the hip/elite rock crowd mixed with idiot punk rockers such as myself (they declared all out war on this post rock band, Tourtoise, once, writing to every local zine talking about how much they sucked, and were assholes, and they think that Tourtoise were the bastards that robbed their house...) not to mention that the Goblins wear Mexican wrestling masks, bill themselves as family entertainment -- despite their song "Fuck the Bible" but they felt that really had to be said -- and their new album is of Misfits songs that they claim have never seen the light of day (including songs like "Abbot and Costello Meet the Wolfman") and are calling it Missing Fits.

Not much of a scene around my parts but there's a band under the name of USV that's really nice and spiteful. Every song the do is under a minute and the singer can scream better than anyone. There newest lp is called "chokeslammed back to life," and it's mighty good punk rock.

Ok, that REALLY surprised me. Didn't realize anyone on this board was in the area. I acctually, FINALLY saw Mary with band for the first time last weekend (AMS Superfriend's Ball) after seeing a handful of solo gigs. I like the band. Nice Ramonesish kind of sound. I need to see more of them.

As for me. Well, I don't like Northern VA, so I refuse to give up Baltimore as local for me (I went to school there). Which lets me say Lake Trout, for the nights I want to hear something that no one else is doing. And All Mighty Senators (a Baltimore institution for 14 years now) for the nights you just want to be silly and dance till you drop.

I will keep them in mind, thanks

and I missed mary on my birthday, the 26th - quite a disappointment, in keeping with the whole day

AMS have some local gigs this month. Unfortunatly, only on nights when I've got something else happening.

Trout have a DC gig at the end of the month, but nothing in Baltimore till NYE.

From what I understand, that show was sold out. As someone who has been to Fletchers when it was sold out, consider yourself lucky.

And thanks for mentioning Mary, reminded me that I needed to check her tour dates. Might make that Charlottesville gig at the end of the month. C-ville is less then 2 hours from here. Let me know if you decide to hit the Black Cat gig next month in DC.

Saw them support At The Drive-In last November. They were pretty good... I hear they're changing their name... true? That would be a shame.

Yeah...
The girl that used to play the organ is leaving the band and one of the other members (the bass player?) is quitting to play with his band Pretty Girls Make Graves. The rest of the band was going to continue on under a different name (not being the same band and all that). They had one of the best rock band names ever. Fuckin shame.

One of my favorite local bands these days is the Matics, very good Husker Du + Pegboy melodic punk thing going on. The Arrivals, who are actually from my hometown of Blue Island, fucking rock too, melodic punk too, but in a more Buzzcocks/Naked Raygun type way.
