(Somehow the topic this was attached to disappeared mid-response, it was something like "new adventures in music recommendation," but my post wound u in soe techno thread. Well, I'm going to have my say, dammit.)

"RE: Paul Barman
In fact, I did download "The Joy of Your World." Also, I saw him this past weekend. His performance was short. A lanky white guy in a red velour jumpsuit was breakdancing on stage. At one point, this crony draped him with a white lab coat a la James Brown. He wore it and proceeded to teach the crowd about pallindromes so that they could appreciate them in his raps. Unusual? Yes. Worth the $12? Surely.

I've got two very major gripes about Paul Barman.

But before I cuss him, I'd say he is very talented - obviously a very smart guy with a great facility for words and wordplay.

BUT...

...the man should not be a hip hop mc. Why? Cos his voice is irritating as hell. I can't listen to more than one of his songs on the trot without wanting to punch him in the face. It's so kind of whiny and limp sounding. Secondly he has no flow. The words are amazing but there is no rhythm to them, he doesn't ride the beat or modulate what he's doing enough.

I've gotta agree with Tyrone on this one. Two of my friends absolutely worship him, and though I think he has good lyrics I just do NOT get it. I think you've summed it up well with the "no flow" point, Ty. This naturally leads to "no soul." And I too HATE his irritating voice!

As I recently heard it put:

"The problem with hip hop today is that the nerds are getting far too many props."

prince paul bigged barman up and i was desperate to hear him. then one day, i'm listening to the Deltron3030 album - and it's going pretty well - when suddenly some refugee from a bad JerkyBoys sketch wanders in and starts some bad stream of consciousness, all sub-surreal and cartoon. made me wanna leave the room.

anyway: that was him. and now he is my sworn enemy.

But here's the real question: why do people rabidly worship him?

People rabidly worship him? That's big news to me, cos I've found that people either totally despise the guy or like him as a fun novelty, and that's about as far as it goes...

Autopilot: In his defense, Barman was 'in character' on that Deltron record, and he does not sound like that on his records. He's closer to Weird Al aping Eminem on his releases, really...
