Er, what? Any idea what an enormously HUGE question you just asked? If you want to dj dance music properly then you need at least 40 tunes for a one hour set, which would set you back about £200 in the UK. Secondly house? trance? techno? which? They are kind of different, you know, house tunes are too slow to mix into trance, for example, plus most people don't like both styles.

I'm assuming this is pretty much a pop gig, otherwise they'd have got a proper dance dj (no offence intended). In which case I'd suggest you just go and pick up a few compilations ("The best dance album in the world, ever... no. 53") as it'll save you a lot of money and the clueless punters won't know any different.

Er, no. I thought about watching it, and thought about sleeping and chose sleeping. I'm sure it was pretty much the usual thing - actually it's based on a book called 'Pump up the volume' which is in the shops now, and is okay as these things go.

To be honest, I've been such an obsessive researcher of the earliest roots of house that I'm more interested in seeing the later episodes anyhow.

Musical history - I spy a new thread coming on.

Dear tyrone-
Ahhhh...lack of communication leads to misconception.

1. I AM A PROPER DJ SPORT.BEEN IN THE GAME FOR 12 YEARS AS A DJ/MUSIC PRODUCER.IN FACT, I PROBABLY MADE QUITE A FEW TRACKS YOU BOB YOUR HEAD TOO...IF YOU WANT MY CREDENTIALS, THERE ARE A FEW ON BARBELITH WHO WILL BACK ME UP OR I CAN SEND YOU A CD!!
( sorry about the caps...my ego is crushed...)

2. What I did want to know, seeing how Barbelith hosts fictionsuits from all over the globe, is what OTHERS are listening to in order to inspire me/ give me an edge over the other DJ's in this provience by having new music that may be unfamilliar to alot of people here.In short, I was looking for ideas...not an all encompassing list of essential dance tunes.

Having said that, anyone have any ideas? What is your favorite house/trance/electronic or hip hop tracks of the moment??

Thank you and sorry for the outburst and the previous confusion.

Yeeesh.

Sorry Rex, it just sounded like you were going 'this dance lark's easy, innit, just need to get some big trance tunes and slap 'em on, kids'll all go NUTTTYY! Woo! Nice one , top one, get sorted"

Or something.

Tunes mashing up dancefloors near me are: Redman - "Let's get dirty" (commercial and a little old, but everybody slept on it), Edan - "Smooth Lyrics" (back to basics hip hop, has something indefinable). House, I'm a bit out of touch with, stuff that seems hot is where the style is recovering a bit of its old confidence and ballsiness - big screechy diva stuff. The new Linda Clifford has a bit of a buzz round it. Also on that tip, bit of a revival of Billie Ray Martin's "Your lovin arms", possibly handbag's finest moment and a great piece of populist dance music. Wouldn't be surprised to see a stateside style mix of this track at somepoint soon.
Top recommendation is to pick up the 'Kingpin' compilation which has a bit of a hardcore punk/old-skool hardcore (in the proto-jungle sense) with a healthy dose of ragga injected. Pretty vital sounding stuff. Dunno how much of a 'scene' it is though.

Dance scene generally a bit moribund and lacking in energy at the moment. Hip hop has all the zeitgeist, and people are generally really feeling big underground party tunes in the mold of 'Simon says', 'Ante up', 'Boom' and 'No escapin this'. Also anything with those old-skool hoover synth basslines, like the Adam F album. On the more underground tip, the real technoid, junglist vibe in the darker side of UK hip hop is also very exciting. Karl Hinds is the name to watch.

Helpful?

A lot of the chin stroking techno bores I know have been going on about Broken Beat for the last year or so. Jazzy, laidback techno and house tunes with low end bass and skittery breaks. 4Hero, Total Science, Domu have been putting out nice tunes and it's getting mixed in with lots of Zed Bias style UK Garage, K&D style Nu Jazz and the occasional bit of minimal/dub techno.

I don't know if people are doing much dancing or fucking to it...it gets played in (very) small venues here (New York), usually with more dancefloor friendly house as the main attraction. Nice to listen too though.
