Sorry Rex, it just sounded like you were going 'this dance lark's easy, innit, just need to get some big trance tunes and slap 'em on, kids'll all go NUTTTYY! Woo! Nice one , top one, get sorted"
Or something.
Tunes mashing up dancefloors near me are: Redman - "Let's get dirty" (commercial and a little old, but everybody slept on it), Edan - "Smooth Lyrics" (back to basics hip hop, has something indefinable). House, I'm a bit out of touch with, stuff that seems hot is where the style is recovering a bit of its old confidence and ballsiness - big screechy diva stuff. The new Linda Clifford has a bit of a buzz round it. Also on that tip, bit of a revival of Billie Ray Martin's "Your lovin arms", possibly handbag's finest moment and a great piece of populist dance music. Wouldn't be surprised to see a stateside style mix of this track at somepoint soon.
Top recommendation is to pick up the 'Kingpin' compilation which has a bit of a hardcore punk/old-skool hardcore (in the proto-jungle sense) with a healthy dose of ragga injected. Pretty vital sounding stuff. Dunno how much of a 'scene' it is though.
Dance scene generally a bit moribund and lacking in energy at the moment. Hip hop has all the zeitgeist, and people are generally really feeling big underground party tunes in the mold of 'Simon says', 'Ante up', 'Boom' and 'No escapin this'. Also anything with those old-skool hoover synth basslines, like the Adam F album. On the more underground tip, the real technoid, junglist vibe in the darker side of UK hip hop is also very exciting. Karl Hinds is the name to watch.
