in which i realise a lot of the music i'm listening to nowadays isn't British or American.

ok: so if you haven't seen the US/UK threads - the idea is to namecheck bands or musicians who you think are - excuse the term - 'trendsetters' - who are and/or will be influential on the periphery of the industry, or in leading the mainstream bandwagons.

i'm gonna start with France: 'cause there's been some amaaaazing things coming out of there... the hip-hop axis: I Am, loads of others i can't recall at this time on a sunday morning - but not missing out my personal faves, the saian supa crew.

21stCentury DiscoFrancais: daft punk ('discovery'! men in massively expensive robot suits expressing themselves thru flashing LEDs and fantastic music)... god, i'm really not with this - but let's add
air into the mix for dance-recovery purposes.

iceland's sigur ros for taking post-rock to the Northern Lights...

australia's avalanches: 'since i left you' being, surely the best use of mixology and melody...ever! pure pleasure - and impossible to dislike (seriously, try it).

gonzales and peaches have already been mentioned - sleazee lo-tech funk comin' straight outta canada - but allied with that whole German digital hardcore movement - atari teenage riot being the originators (love 'em or hate 'em) - and, for my money, the best of the bunch being chicks on speed.

uh: back to iceland, and bjork - still taking herself by surprise with 'vespertine'.

i don't know half as much about the current state of play in Jamaica as i should - so i'll leave it to someone else to say who're the movers and shakers in what is traditionally one of the hotbeds of musical awesomeness.

oh: and japan: i know the boredoms are likely to get a mention. eX-girl are pretty good too - but i'm sure someone can do a better job of covering it than i can.

yes.

The New Pornographers are a great pop band hailing from Canada.

i've heard good stuff about (but only a couple of tracks from) the french rap band, NTM. i'd also like to know what talvin singh is doin' with himself these days. and dEUS for that matter.

need to mention leila as well.

and does anyone know of any cool artists from japan except DJ krush?(didn't think much of the boredoms or eX-girl. but i quite like nigo)

There was a thread on this very topic a wee while back, which has since fallen off the bottom of the list, never to be seen again. fortunately I made a copy of it....<I started the thread, and realised it would take me ages to work up the effort to download a representative sample of all the bands listed, so I stashed it away for future purposes.> If y'want, I'll mail you/PM you a copy of it...

if Nique ta mere means something like 'fuck your mother', then yes. at least that's what the french guy i was talking to the other week seemed to think.

I've got a french tune called "Les Petits chefs" by PM, which is great, but I know nothing about (including what it is about).

Dunno if PM are otherwise good. Saian Supa Crew is ok, but a little bit tasteful for my liking.

Also stick in a word for DJ Patife from Brazil, with truly 21st century drum n bass, in that it's ditched all the boring technoid crap, and just got back to having a groove.

And Orishas, the cuban rap outfit. Very fun and lively, although quite a french sort of sound at the end of the day.

Tommy Tee is a Norwegian rapper. He's pretty average in the greater scheme of things, but much better than you'd expect.
