I love this film. I've never had the chance to pick it up on video so I have only ever seen it once at the cinema, but it has stuck with me.
The portrayal of the main character is just so gripping. The shot where he stands behind the butchers counter in his new job at the supermarket is such a vivid image. It conveys so much about class, capitalism, human boundaries. Perfect.
I think the "ultra-realistic" violence in the film grows out of this detachment, and this is a really detached man, he really is seul contre tous. Detachment allows us to behave monstrously, if we don't empathise then violence comes easily.
Why is he detached? It seems to come from personal weakness, personality traits, whatever and the treatment he recieves. If everything of personal value is taken away how else can you act? Detachment is a sanity-saving measure. It can't hurt anymore because you just don't care. |
