Bandwidth on the site suddenly doubled yesterday from 400-500Mb a day to nearly 1000Mb.

Was yesterday a particularly busy day or is there something screwy going on?

er... wouldn't the "Barbefeuds!" thread have something to do with it, would?

Surely you saw this thread, which went to I think 13 pages in about 24 hours. Impressive, non?

For what it's worth, surely plenty of the Americans will be off cavorting with family and friends for the next several days, and maybe that will then LOWER the bandwidth.

Just a thought.

Sorry, Tom!

Not if the Americans here are anything like me...being home with my parents = internet time tripling for me...

How about "I forgive you, don't do it again"?

I should never have mentioned that end-of-term analogy... It's like the headmaster just walked in and caught us all trashing the classroom...

I regard this as a premature discordian celebration of 23/11.

Turn it back on in for Friday. Pleeeeeeaaase.

perhaps you should explain to the techno-tards amongst us (*raises hand*) what dramatically increases bandwidth so we can keep that sort of behavior to a minimum?

and flux - Im exactly the same, hiding out somewhere, anywhere to escape the endless bickering and bitchery (as well as the orgy comments, this has got to stop)

I do kinda feel like my parents just walked in and saw all the beer bottles, the full ashtrays, the bong AND Rebecca DeMornay passed out on the couch.

Oh and Flux and Bitchie - Why do you think I'm here tonight? It was my Dad's b-day yesterday so I came home early for a dinner and while all my friends are off in Chicago tonight going to Latin Clubs and on dates with hot French boys and smoking pot and watching "South Park" and dancing at the most rockin' rock n' roll club Club Foot, I am here. For tonight, anyway.

Bitchie - a thread that balloons to 15 pages in one day is the sort of thing that eats up bandwidth. Or doubleposting and such. Dont' feel alone though- it took me forever to get the hang of basic UBB code, and I still can't get it together to do any decent HTML coding that may make my blog halfway interesting.

Can I just ask people to remember that just because enough people are donating to (nearly) cover the normal bandwidth bills, this is not an excuse to relax and just post left-right and centre. Otherwise the bills will explode even more and I'll need MORE donations.

Basically a 15 page thread in one day is great - it's wonderful even - IF IT'S RELEVANT. Please don't ask me to pay for people to bicker!

I would say in defence of the "Barbefeuds" thread that it did in fact have some very productive results - Pin and Flyboy discovered that they in fact loved each other after all, and that Pin was Zoey Passmore, Cameron and I made up, and possibly more and nastier feuding further down the line may have been averted.

Oh God, I feel guilty now. My paypal thing shoudl now be working - would it help if I sent some extra dinero for this infraction?

I agree with Haus.

(I can't believe I said that.)

I think it was important. Kinda like 'potlatch' way back when.

I know it got out of hand and then a bit silly, but...

I agree. The bit with the ego fellation was cool.

That doesn't actually justify the money though. Sorry.

Lucky I was too busy to go online that night, or it'd've been more like 2000 Mb.

I get the impression that barbelith has taken on a life of its own that has surpassed original intentions. I suspect that it was set up as a debating site and that as membership has grown it has taken on more of a role as a real time chat site. Hence the thread rot, flirting, bitching in the conversation. Hence the increased bandwidth loads and associated costs.

Does it make a difference if it's on long thread or several smaller ones, if you see what I mean?

Only if people read through the whole thread rather than just skipping through it to the relevant pages. And of course three hundred people reading and posting everything that goes on in one thread is going to result in substantially more traffic than the same number split between very different threads (because they will only read it when it's been updated!)

How strange - that must be why I've been posting a lot less recently.
