..Zombie movies.

I'm interested because I have a major soft spot for them and I'm currently working on a no/low budget DV short, which i can only describe as an Existential Zombie flick. Its a conbination of Seventies Romero and Argento soundtrack (provided by Loveless).

So whats your take on the sub genre, fave flick, director, mythos?

I have a huge love for zombie flicks. Huge.

There was a period about a year and a half ago where I introduced my roommate to the sub-genre. We rented a different zombie film every night for about three weeks, played Resident Evil until our eyes were bleeding, I dug out my copy of Skipp and Spector's zombie anthology, The Book of the Dead, we had a killer All Flesh Must Be Eaten rpg campaign going, and to top it off we made a pilgrimige to Evans City for a quick NOTLD/Crazies tour. Yeah, those were the days....

I should really make another post in the self-mutilation thread, I think.

Care to give us some names of the classics, for those of us unfamiliar with them?

Oh, my. That's a tall order.

A few:

The Romero trilogy - Night, Dawn and Day of the Dead. Day is a little dodgy, but is by far the darkest of the three and has some great bits. The other two are essential. You can go waaay back to Val Lewton and I Walked With A Zombie, which really isn't great, and is one of the lesser Lewton pictures, but it seems to have had an impact.

Newer classics include Cemetery Man/Dellamorte Dellamore which is a personal favorite. Also Jackson's Brain Dead/Dead Alive.

Some will name The Serpent And The Rainbow but it's shite. The book, however is extremely interesting - too bad the film has only a narrow resemblance. But then, the book is non-fiction...

And let us not forget Redneck Zombies -- Tobacco Chawin' Cannibal Kinfolk

more seriously the Savini directed remake of Night of the Living Dead was pretty damn good.

Some lesser known titles include...

Garden of the Dead, in which formaldhyde sniffing convicts are shot and come back to life as the quickest, hatchet wielding zombies to ever hit the screen. It's only an hour long, so the pain isn't too intense.

The Blind Dead series. Undead Templars ravage the Spanish countyside, eating flesh and tearing blouses wherever they go. The first one has one of the most downbeat, exhilirating endings ever. They can hear your heart beating!

Any Underwater Nazi Zombie movie. They're all fantastic.

And Zombie. An unofficial sequel to Romero's Dawn of the Dead. At least that's how they promoted it in Italy. Famous for it's use of the injury to the eyeball motif, the shark vs. zombie battle, and it's utterly bleak scenerio.

Enjoy!

Sorry, I just can't stand 'em. Every time I've given a zombie flick a chance, I haven't been able to get through them. They bore me silly.

Is there a zombie movie for people who hate zombie movies? (Say, in the way Marshal Law is a superhero comic for people who hate superheroes).

Troy, I'd say that would be Cemetery Man. It's quite ridiculous, but has a very non-zombie flick heart, with a lot of symbols flying around and a Jeunet&Caro worthy ending.

Forgot about the Blind Dead series. Elite or someone issued Tombs of the Blind Dead and it's follow-up on laserdisc, here in the states, a couple of years ago. A quick Amazon search reveals a DVD as well, though some others make it out to be out of print. hm.

"Stop it. You're ignorant."

I love zombies. Especially the satisfying twitch that happens when you make their heads 'splode like overripe melons.

Oh. And I still like Evil Dead 2 as a sorta-kinda zombie movie.

Thanks. My brother and I have recently developed an (unhealthy?) interest in schlocky 80's horror stuff, so this might be kind of a cool direction to take.

Ah, Zombies.

Anyone ever play the game? I've heard it's a hoot.

I dunno, 08. I'd actually seen a bootleg prior to the actual realeased version, so there may have been some differences, but as I recall 10 years later, Barbaara's final gunshot... well, no spoilers here, but c'mon man, that was hard.

You guys are forgetting :

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and all its sequels (number one is classic - two wasn't bad - the rest suck - there's a new one - CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD - but I haven't seen it so I don't know if it's part of the franchise)

and DEAD ALIVE - which was awesome.

Can anybody name this one -

it had wino's drinking tainted bottles of Viper whiskey and turning into zombies.

I remember a scene with a zombie wino melting in a toilet.

The title escapes me.

(Sorry videodrome - I missed your mentioning of Dead Alive.)

LOL

The redub of Night of the Living Dead is hiiiilarious. What the hell is it called...
ah yesh:
Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D

I recomend it heartily. But now I have to go get a tuna sandwich.

Lucio Fulci is a master 'City Of The Living Dead' is a classic...Someone said that the 'return' sequels are shit, but I have a soft spot for Part 3, with its Romeo and Juliet-style take-off. Savini is a legend, and although his remake of 'night' was shit, his new movie 'Vampirates' looks excellent. Check 'Zombiethon' for a bit of 'ccrraazzyy' fun, and another Troma zombie classic (apart from 'Redneck Zombies') is 'Space Zombie Bingo'...camp, cheesy zombage (is that a word?)

That's probably because, classic though it is, Carnival of Souls isn't a zombie flick.

Wow didn't appreciate how many sick fucks like myself are out there in Barbelth, great.
I apologise for teh lame thread start and will post in greater depth when free between pre-production of the flick.

Of interest I also like to stretch the subgenre of zombies to cover films containing characters that are reanimated corpses. This means that one can classify films such as Universal Soldier and The Crow as zombie films.

The film you refer to is Lucio Fulci's Zombies, Creeping Flesh. Most also known for its graphic eye impaled on a large wooden splinter sequence (original major cut in UK). You see things get transatlantic tricky with titles, the name Zombie was used as a marketing tool of Euro flicks in the States. Again more on this to come.

Hey, I gotta big up the only zombie flick shot in The Lake District (Uk), The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue. Somehow the director thought that the North of England was exotic!!!???!!

Hey anyone remember the mad buddy cop flick Dead Heat?

In that case, try the classics:

Braindead

Re-Animator

Alien Dead

Then there's the old 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' and 'Lifeforce' set in London.

Can anyone remember the name of that Zombie film where the Zombies attack a luxury apartment block, and end up having a big fuck off fight with all the jocks in the gym in the basement?
