Is there a chance of a schedule so we know when to expect it, or is it random in the hopes of making sure people don't go crazy before and after?

I think a 9-5 blackout would be good for the work productivity of many barbelites...

Well, when's the highest traffic days? In order to be effective, I'd imagine that Tom's going to have to shut down on one of those. Can we have some usage stats, or some kind of calendar, Tom?

I missed it on Monday, but I guessed that perhaps the "Barbelith: Your Cure For Mondayitis" usage is pretty high...

I think the problem with having a calendar is that it means that people may go mad before and after, in a way that they won't if it's just random. More to the point, since I can track the average bandwidth usage on a day-to-day basis, I can just shut it down occasionally throughout the month as I think it's necessary, rather than for significant blocks at a time - which I think everyone would prefer. At the moment though, I think you can expect it to be off one or two work days a week. I'll try and make sure it's only off from like 10am to 4pm so that you're not completely disconnected from it during working hours though.

Time zones? Or does that not matter too much?

Well to be honest - if I take it down for the bulk of the UK working day then it should have little effect on Americans at all. And it should have LESS effect on the rest of the world than it does on the UK.

How do you think I felt??? I was SO EXCITED to see what you folks had been up to while I was out of town and then... >>gasp<< the site was down!!

WAAAAAH!!!

But no, 'sok. I'm all for the blackouts, and I think you're right about keeping them random, Tom. Though maybe you could give us a vague three day time window? I don't know if that would still cause the bandwith problem, though.

ESPECIALLY if they happen during the UK work day!

Seriously though, I'd guess the best time to shut it down would be sometime between 12/2pm - 6/8pm UK time. Then you're hitting the US workday as well, and so you'll have more of an effect on cutting down the bandwidth. Plus the likelihood of someone having to endure all six hours at work with the site down is lessened.

Just my thoughts.
