I had to turn it off. It hurt that fucking much.
I really didn't get the point of it; if I want Othello, I'll see Othello. If you're going to do something so loosely "based on it", leave it at that; based-on is good. But don't then dress it up as the real thing.
As such, the script was clunky, clanky, at times appallingly banal, and gave Chris Ecclestone nothing to do but overact. The music was overplayed, and there was far too much DOYOUSEEWHATIVEDONETHERE? DOYOUSEE? from Andrew Davies. It was very heavy handed.
That's before you get into the whole modern-racial-whatever you want to talk about- that it brings up. But to be honest, I turned it off at 10pm, because it was just painful to watch, an appalling waste of talent.
I'm going to be rude now, but the easiest way I could sum it up would be that "stupid people would think it was clever". It's not clever in any way. I just hope enough people saw through it. God. It really made me want to THROW THINGS at the TV. |
