Where's Gollum?

I've never read THe Lord Of The Rings, being this lazy bastard that I am (one day I will, I will). But anyway I'm a little bit familiar with the environment of the story because I have read The Hobbit some time ago.

Anyway, I'm excited to see the movie, just because it's been SO long since I've seen a good adventure film (Tomb Raider? Please...), and, being LOTR a story already tested and approved (and loved) by so many, I think the flick it's gonne be really something worth the wait. (And it has Cate Blanchett. Ah, Cate Blanchett.)
BUT the reason for this post is the following: I've been on the website, saw the trailer etc... and - Where's Gollum? Why they don't show him? Or he doesn't show up in LOTR? I think he was by far the most interesting character in The Hobbit. Are they making a big deal of his appearance or something?

(Now, back to saying "Cate Blanchett")
Cate Blanchett.
Cate Blanchett.
Cate Blanchett...

Same reason Yoda wasn't in Episode IV: A New Hope.

Remember, this movie is only the first of three. Gollum doesn't show up in Lord of the Rings until the middle of the second book--that is, the middle of the second movie.

Actually, Gollum is in the first book, as a shadowy figure trailing the Fellowship through the mines of Moira. And that's what he is in the film as well, a half-glimpsed figure sneaking through the darkness... I think the impact of his appearance would be lessened if you knew what he really looked like, hence the absence of promotional photos.

AAahh... I see.

Is he some sort of spider/penguin hybrid or something?

More spider than penguin... I don't think penguins featured largely in Tolkien's mythosphere.

Anyway, best thing to do is to wait and see.

I rather hope it's kept as a surprise as in the book. The building suspense bit...

What about the giant sabre-toothed penquin in the highly secret and non-existent fourth book: "The king is back, and this time HE'S PISSED OFF!!!"

Official: Gollum's in it. See it and see. Not being brusque, but just not wanting to spoil it for anyone...

A request, though - could we direct conversation on LOTR to this thread please? Hopefully it'll thin out the space here...
