I've gone and munted my registration

Why oh fucking why did paypal have to put TWO DIFFERENT four digit numbers on my credit card statement? - two tries and it treatens my creditcard with swift death so i get them to send me a new different number 5 full seconds before realising which number i should have typed in in the first place.

ARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!

A friend tells me that you don't actually NEED to have that registration number to do small transactions. He might be fucked in the head though...

You don't. Or, rather, for amounts under $100 you don't need to enter it. I haven't, and it says my first payment has gone through... whether this means I'll have to dig it out when it reaches around $100 worth of transactions is unknown, but at the moment, it suits me and my lazy arse just fine.

By the way - eeryone who has donated should now have received a confirmation th you haven't received one then your transaction hasn't worked or gone through. Sorry to be a pain...

I use a different email address for purchases and such to avoid excessive junk mail in my regular account. Id like to change my listed paypal address to my regular account, but I dont want to mess up my current status. anyone know anything about this?

For some reason Paypal REALLY HATES ME.

I thought it might allow my card through if I tried again, but this time I couldn't log in because it kept telling me my password was wrong (it ISN'T wrong, you goddamn goons, I wrote it down on a piece of paper, so I know!). And it won't let me start another account because you can't have two accounts running from the same email..

Paypal is clearly created and run by fools, penpushers and ne'erdowells.

Ah well... No luck from that e-mail batch. That's a shame. Well I've just got another bill for $110 this month - of which $40 is covered by subscriptions gathered to date. I just can't afford to keep this going at this rate, so I'm going to have to bring the rolling black-outs back. That means we have to save about 140Mb of traffic a month, which should amount to about five week days. I'm thinking I might do that now rather than later - so then the rest of the month isn't a worry.

Tom, may I suggest, until the funds are built, we pattern the blackouts? Perhaps on a day when most people are too fucked up to post anyways? Saturdays from 4p to Sunday, 4p? I suppose this might not be so logical -- you may have to pick high-traffic days to curb. Hmm.

Just a thought.

It won't accept my Switch details!

I want to pay!

I want to pay a large sum of money!

Enough to make it worthwhile taking a cheque to the bank!

Please provide me a way of doing this!

Even if it means giving me your postal address!

I won't send you Anthrax!

I'm a God-fearing man!

My God will punish me if I misuse you personal information!

Please!

I want to contribute!

Please!

Actually for all my bitching about it, having received my statement with my first payment in it it hasn't pissed my card up as much as I thought it was, so I'm now looking more kindly on the idea of a regular subscription through Paypal...

I have seen the light!

I support Expressionless, too. Obviously, you can't go on outlaying large sums each month, Tom. It's disappointing that, given the large number of registered members, there have not been more responses. And I do wonder to what extent the method of payment is a deterrent.

As I said in my email yesterday (sorry, I was in a hurry & I forgot to put the subject at the top), I think that a postalbox address for cheques would be a workable alternative for folk like me who don't have/want to have credit cards. If this were possible, perhaps a further option could be making an annual subscription.

Apart from extra cost, this would require some secretarial work and so take up more of your time though, and I wonder if one of the founding members of the collective could take this on, or assist you with this?

What d'ya think?

What are the chances of getting some kind of Direct Debit system going, Tom?

Tom Coates
11:55 / 04.11.01
Honestly I would REALLY prefer not to use it. I know that everyone wants to help out and I know that some of you can't use Paypal (although I repeat, you don't need a credit card - just a card with Visa or Mastercard on it somewhere), but really the thing here is that everything is kept track of in the simplest way possible.at my end. I just want the whole process to be so transparent that we don't have to think about it at all once it's set up.

Having got my Paypal working I'd be willing to act as a conduit for people wanting to pay.
Anyone who's going to the London meet next Saturday can give me cash then, unless the great Tom is going to turn up as well?

I'm still working on the "finding someone with a credit card who trusts my cash" thing... BUT I just opened a new bank account, and am busily trying to get my own card.
Anything does happen as regards cheques though, that's not a problem.
(Fuck, this is about the only thing online that I WOULD pay for...)

Am seriously considering getting an evil credit card for this as well. Also for those sites that don't accept switch....and you can get your mind out of the gutter there :-)

I don't have a Credit Card nor do I want one. I don't mind paying - I can send Postal Orders (I don't have a cheque book either).

I don't know whether it's worth signing up for this, it's a pre-pay card (you charge it up like a Gas or 'leccy card:-
http://www.splashplastic.com/

there's not that much that has signed up to it yet (I haven't used it either), but well seems like a good idea for milking kids of their pocket money over the net.

take a cheque? coz i'm another who only has switch.

tom, is there another type of online service like paypal which us brits with debit cards could use? because we can only use our debit cards if we're american, or if they come with credit card symbols attached. (and yes, i know non-brits want to pay too, but it's the brits complaining most about being unable to pay via switch...) heck, even somewhere that takes delta/cirrus would be ok, as they accept switch. (they're how you know you can get money out at banks abroad...)

Good idea! ... I won't be there on Saturday, but I could post you a cheque for a year's worth of $2.50's..

Anyone who wants to pay me the money to pass on to Tom via my Paypal, PM me and we'll work something out. Otherwise Tom, and I say this with the greatest possible respect to you for keeping this going against insurmountable odds and acts of weirdness, you're going to have to be more flexible about how you're going to accept people's cash...

Well I for one am disturbed about sending card details to someone abroad, in a foriegn country, where I can't hunt them down and don't know how the local trading standards works.

But Real player didn't rip me of, given the chance.

So I'll give it a try. Cos we love you.

Not a problem. Bear in mind that we don't as yet have enough subscriptions to pay the bills, so there may yet be blackouts next month. We just have enough money through donations and subscriptions combined this month to pay THIS month's bills.

Ack! Got a statement yesterday and the Paypal number wasn't actually on there.
Sodick.
