Louis meets the Hamiltons (Spoilers from the first line)

My God, but Christine Hamilton likes her wine.

Did anyone see this last night? What were your impressions?

I really, really enjoyed it - there were plenty of good chuckles in a dark way to be had

[eg: Neil Hamilton: "The one thing that gets me is I've never been in a sex scandal. Then, a caption: "Two weeks later....."]

[The 'investigative journalist' who turned out to be a lorry driver was another personal highlight.]

But I also found it strangely illuminating, and I found myself almost feeling sorry for the couple.

No, in fact I did feel sorry for Christine, but did anyone else feel that maybe Neil should work out when to shut the FUCK up?

Like when they had just been arrested in connection with the rape charge and he started telling his wife she needed something 'filling inside you' as a gag?

And watching the television news after the fact, seeing the News at Ten you watched so avidly again as it was being made, then after it had been made with its subjects watching it.... Meta-television anyone?

What did you think? Was it a worthwhile programme?

And as close as you'll get to the ultimate Weird Weekend:

Louis Theroux reviews Jon Ronson

They do strike me as odd, especially Christene Hamilton, that whole thing with Theroux smacked of manipulation, especially the crocodile tears throughout. I mean, if you are that upset and don't want to be filmed, you pull over and kick the journo's out.

Obviously it was tremendously upsetting for them, but they were manipulating Theroux to their advantage.

Advantage? So what? I don't understand why that matters. Generally, the doc made me feel sorry for them. And I knew it would raise all this "skilled" manipulators of the media" bullshit - my bugbear. All that stuff; it's so completely dehumanising, not because it degrades the individual in question, but rather because it doesn't allow for a 3D interpretation of real world events. People in the media just aren't the arch-schemers some people think they are - that's just entertaining fantasy - most of the time they're a bit of a mess, esp. when they've had their lives ransacked by the tabloids for as many years as the Hamiltons (regardless of whether they co-operated and/or made any money out of it). The Hamilton's "deft manipulation of the media" struck me as a clumsy bloody shambles. Crocodile tears? God, why is it so easy (inspite of a whole life's worth of evidence to the contrary) to believe that the world is actually really very simple, controlled by heirarchies of conspiracy? Eh? Tell me that, eh? TELL ME! EH!?!

EH?!?!!

P.S. This little rant has nothing to do with the Hamiltons, it's really a rail against the media constructed mindset that see's everything in terms of simple narratives....
