I loved Neverending Story when I first saw it, but am a little nervous to see if it holds up against the layers of cynicism I've developed since then.

What about "The Navigator"? Medieval peasants fleeing the black plague dig a tunnel that leads them to the 20th century, rather well done.

And [the film that shall not be named] gave me a massive headache, which I later realized was caused by my brain attempting to burrow an escape tunnel through the back of my skull.

Why does everybody hate the Dungeons and Dragons movie? Is it because people were expecting some high quality fantasy movie with great acting and nifty special effects? Personally, I thought it was a nice bit of mind candy, as long as I didn't think too hard while watching it.

For me it was a laugh...

hanging out in the balconey watching all the gamer groups attempting to apply D&D logic to the film, groaning & obviously suffering the effects of feeble mind...

The Beholders where a nice bit of candy, though utterly pointless

and the "it's some sort of wall of force" scene got an actual laugh out of me... but remember:

The movie was called Dungeons & Dragons

not
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons . . .

It wasn't the expectations of high quality but the same disappointment and anger when you get a complete lemon.

The whole production, except for the special effects, was horrible. 'Jimmy Olsen' was a terrible choice for a leading man, Thora Birch was completely out of her depth, Jeremy Irons was great but unfortunately he was the only one playing his part over the top so his character was just inappropriate, the comic/tragic relief sidekick who comes back at the end for the sequel was just sad. The direction was poor and the plot was hackneyed, full of holes and just plain uninteresting.

Of course, that's all just my humble opinion.

Movies I liked were:
'Willow' (even though it had a short hobbit like protagonist)
'Lady Hawk'
'Beastmaster' (the sequels sucked though)
'Conan' (the sequel I thought was actually a good D&D movie - but a horrible Conan movie)
'Crouching Tiger'
'Chinese Ghost Story'
'Excalibur'
'Dragon Heart' (I'm not sure why but I liked it)
'Fire and Ice' (animated Frazetta movie... what more needs to be said)
'Sword and the Sorceress'
'Highlander' (but only the first one)

Ones that just didn't do anything for me:
'Legend' (Tim Curry was great, Mia was cool but I just didn't dig it)
'Neverending Story'
'Dark Crystal' (even though I still find myself saying 'Ugly Gelfling' occasionally)
'Wizards' (I know it's blasphemy to say anything bad about it but other than the whole 'stinking yellow fairies' bit I just didn't get the hype)

And one that is so bad it just has to be seen:
'Yor: Hunter from the future' It starts off as a Conan ripoff and ends up as a Star Wars ripoff.

The reason the plot of the Dungeons and Dragons movie was so bad can probably be blamed on the material used. I bet whoever scripted the movie was handed a Player's Handbook and maybe some of the other handbooks and told to make a movie out of it.

Actually, the guy who made the film is a huge D&D fan. He's had the rights forever. He also has never been to film school and has never directed, written or produced a film. As far as I'm concerned he still hasn't.
I think the reason it was such a disappointment is the very fact that he was a D&D fan. It could have been great.

Well I thought his death scene was the smartest move in that whole ficticous Universe. Do you remember the expression on his face? it was like...

"please kill me... so I can get out of this damn story!!!"

how very invisible if you ask me...

The death scene would have been good if it wasn't ruined at the end with the whole scene at his grave with the energetic resurrection and transportation of the group.

Laaaammmmeee.

I think they were setting up the next movie: Dungeons and Dragons - Planescape. In which our heroes hop to other D&D property worlds, save the day and move on to the next.

If they popped into Krynn though, Raistlin would kick their lilly-livered asses.
