I love Samurai Jack

It's official I have fallen for a new cartoon show.
Fuckin' hell, what do they think they are doing, its not for kids. For sure.

The narrative and styling is soo Lone Wolf and Cub it hurts. The incredible use of framing is unbelievable. It reminds me alot of some cool Flash animations I've seen. Eisenstein (getting anal) wrote heavily about teh Japanese approach to art and framing. He stated that the next evolution in moving image would be the advancement of framing size and shape. My first truly inspirational viewing of this was a cartoon. Blew me away (I hope I'm not being naive)
Its what comics had over films, the classic framing changes, a la Carlos Esquerez in the late 70's and 80's.

Enough from me, anyone else frothing or loathing...
...SAMURAI JACK

Since Cartoon Network isn't broadcast in Canada, I've had to downloade SJ episodes from the net, which takes bloody ages.

But it's worth it, though - the design and animation are stunning. I've only seen the first three, but I'm looking forward to more.

I do have one problem though, and it's that I found the first episode the most interesting of the lot - when Jack is travelling the world, training and learning the world's myriad combat techniques. I thought this part was absolutely brilliant and once he was flung into the future, suddenly it wasn't quite as interesting to me any more.

I'm sure once I see a few more I'll change my mind...

There's an interview with Genndy Tartatofsky and lots of production artwork from the show in this month's DRAW! magazine...

Oh dear god yes, only seen one of the shows over at a mates house and was blown away by it as well, jaw droppingly cool.
Minimalism in the extreme, very little dialog, just samurai jack vs blasted landscape and then giant rock creature who was cursed and had to die in single combat. Jack kills him, land returns to natural state.
Very cool animation, all lines and large blocks of colour, reminded me of Flash animation.
*sigh* Wonder if they'll bring it out on video/Dvd.

Yeah.. I've been totally enjoying this cartoon.

I sort of feel sorry for him though, as his success will be his failure. They're never really going to let him return to his homeland/time and set things right until the last episode...thus the longer the series runs the more suffering & sacrafice he will endure...

Poor guy

The greatest moment in cartoon history---

Jack is have flashbacks to his childhood of his family, his first love, and the samurai who inspired him to greatness.

The samurai, a gruff man who looks like he has been through many a battle, fends off a bunch of evil guys with little or no trouble. Pretty cool on its own. But then he walks over to a wheelbarrow and picks up a baby and it becomes obvious that it IS Lone Wolf and Cub, and he walks off into the sunset carrying the child.

I nearly crapped

i'd like it a lot better if it didnt degenerate into a kill-the-bad-guys cartoon quite so often, and the "widescreen" effect is pretty hokey...but the show has its moments.

ZIM!!!

Zim is funny, but sometimes the humour seems forced. I haven't seen every episode of Jack, but it seems to be consistent in its quality.

Samurai Jack is has far more style than any other animated show on U.S. television. Unfortunately, it's the typical toned down for the kiddies violence, i.e. it's OK to kill robots, insect beings, etc. but not humanoids. At it's heart, it's still too predictable.

Invader Zim, though it has long been cancelled, never fails to freak me with it's genuine weirdness and skewering of pop culture. It's often quite bleak as well, which I love.

I love surreal cartoons, and I want to put in some props for

(1) the angry beavers (nickelodeon)
(2) spongebob squarepants (nickelodeon)
(3) dexter's lab (cartoon net)
(4) powerpuff girls (cn)
(5) rocko's modern life (nick)
(6) catdog (nick)

All, in theory, for kids. ha.

it's on like five times a day on my telly, tho the eps get repeated firly regularly. i love the way each one breaks down into a traditional warner bros. format, jack has just the one challenge per episode, but he tries it in lots of fun different ways. my favourite one at the mo is where he doesn't have the right footwear to defeat the motorbike-monsters and keeps getting laughed at for wearing high heels and that.

Wow am I the amazingly late arrival at the party. I just caught it on cable for the first time about a week ago. God help me - it's on three times a day, different episodes, and I'm running against a deadline in a fortnight.

Bastards.

It's amazing.

As far as I can see, it's not on DVD in the UK yet. Or am I wrong?

I am late, also.

but I'd just like to comment on this:

The samurai, a gruff man who looks like he has been through many a battle, fends off a bunch of evil guys with little or no trouble. Pretty cool on its own. But then he walks over to a wheelbarrow and picks up a baby and it becomes obvious that it IS Lone Wolf and Cub, and he walks off into the sunset carrying the child.

It was obvious it was Lone Wolf and Cub from the outset, and you forgot to add that this ep concerned Sam's memories of his youth....and it's indicated that he's directly inspired by Loney and the cub to BECOME a samurai. Talk about a show wearing it's influences on its sleeve!

Fabulous stuff.

Oh, sorry, you didn't forget the inspiration business at all....

Anyway, allow me to sing its praises with you!

NO NO NO.

(well, it was bound to happen.)

Dark Crystal remains my favorite kid's film of all time. And now they're adding sci-fi elements to the already saturated and wacky mythos? I read somewhere that Hensen considered DC a singular work, and a sequel was out of the question. I'm intrerested in where this goes, but...

thoughts?
