I found this thread searching for Raging Bull, which I just knocked off my never-seen list the other night. Thought it was a good one to revive - am curious about whether the posters who are still around ever filled any of the holes they mentioned above? Especially the Godfather - you are missing out, really!

Main things for me are probably

The Deer Hunter
anything by Ozu
most things by Godard
many things by Fassbinder
L'Atalante
The Bicycle Thief

Obviously there are roughly a million others, but those are the main ones that spring to mind.

I have seen almost none of the movies by directors that are supposed to be the most significant and artful in movie lovers´ opinions. I imagine I might get bored very fast and then feel like a philistine.

I for example got bored with Citizen Kane, Stalker and Days of Heaven. I might have the same problems with movies by Ingmar Bergman, Pier Paolo Pasolini, F. W. Murnau or Alfred Hitchcock.

As long as you've seen Time Bandits, that's all that matters.

I even saw that on the big screen! *feels vindicated*

I also saw Tideland and can recommend it. It´s very fun, dreamy and creepy.

Never seen Casablanca, and I always fall asleep when watching It's A Wonderful Life

I second Casablanca and pretty much all of Fassbinder and Herzog. Also, I don't think I've ever managed to sit through Citizen Kane. Nor Gone With The Wind. Which reminds me - is there a thread for Greatest Books you've NEVER read?

Ha Nolte, good idea. I just created that thread.

The Godfather movies have never appealed to me. Largely because DeNiro and Pacino never really appealed to me. They're in it right?

I do, however, want to see a lot more John Waters than I have. I always seem to miss my chance sadly. 'Repulsion' didn't hold my attention for some reason, I think it was sunny out, and I haven't returned as of yet. To my shame I've never seen any of Jean Cocteau's stuff either unless you count what may've been a heavy directorial influence in Jean Genet's 'Un Chant d'Amour'.

I definitely enthuse you to see 'The Bicycle Thief', JS, with a more tentative suggestion to watch some Ozu (although I've only seen 'Good Morning', 'Late Spring', 'Early Summer' and 'Tokyo Story').

As regards Fassbinder I've only seen 'Fear Eats the Soul'. However, I pretty much loved it. Does anyone have any recommendations in his range of work?

Haven't actually seen Time Bandits -- I just ordered it at work, though, so I'll watch it next week.

I have never seen any of his movies. I just wanted to add that I once pushed the FetS actress Brigitte Mira in a wheelchair along hospital floors (I worked there instead of getting drafted into the army). My only brush with fame!

And I stopped watching The Godfather around the time where someone was waiting in a hospital for possible assassins. The novel was more fun.

I've seen 'El Topo'. I think you can actually buy it on video now. Definitely worth seeing.

Yeah, readily available now and well worth checking. Holy Mountain is even better though for my money.

Suspiria (which I think is a Dargento).

Yeah it is.

It took me ages to get around to watching Vertigo until my local arthouse cinema showed the reissue. I loved it. Suddenly Lynch seemed so unoriginal.

I think Vertigo is the best Hitchcock I’ve seen. Not sure that Lynch nicked his stuff from it though – I reckon he pinched most of his ideas from Celine and Julie Go Boating in fact.

Anyway, back to the point of the thread, my confession is that I’ve never seen 2001

All the Fassbinder films I've seen, which isn't that many, have been fantastic. Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant, in which drunk, bitter lesbians break up in the most melodramatic 1970s way imaginable, is my favourite. The Marriage of Maria Braun, Fox and his Friends and Querelle are also tops.

At this point, if you didn't grow up in the eighties, don't bother. It will seem pretty weak and horribly, horribly dated. Unless you like that.
