The Hobbit has been playing in the West End since Wednesday, cunningly well timed with the release of the Lord of the Rings.
Went to see it today. Here´s what I thought:
Similarily to Harry P. ,the guys in charge seemed to have wanted to cram every little piece of the book into the stageversion to please even the most anally retentive fanboy. Normally not a bad thing, but in a story, where people dont do much else but move from one spot to another, there isnt that much time left for characterdevelopment and proper interaction. they just run around all the time, often quite clumsily. (They also only had three, actually just two weeks of rehearsal, I have been told)
So, the main (dis)satisfaction, as so strangely often with these kind of things comes from seeing the piece of work that oneself has only imagined in one´s head, transformed into a material thing through someone else´´s eyes.
For that I wouldnt want to pay 30 quid.
But here are the really improtant points: The dwarfes dont have beards, at least not very long ones! And they sing all the time in very high voices. But there are fight with goblins that are kind of cool and an amazing linedancing sequence.
And most importantly of all, my mate Dan Copeland, who plays Bilbo is in fact the most hobbitesk human I know. He is well worth seeing.
I thought, I´d share that with you. |
