I've been here for over a year, off and on, Sirius, and I've only seen people banned for Elmoisms.

If this place doesn't meet your definition of free speech, that makes 99% of us fascists...

edit cos it's not even 9am dammit and I need sleep

>One would have HOPED that he would have asked what was going on before accusing us of wide-spread censorship, but unfortunately not.<

sirius: you e-mailed me. Don't know if you also e-mailed Tom, but perhaps you ought to check the address in future before you start sending people "zieg heil" messages.

Well, I've had three Internal Server Errors so far this morning - and I think I can smell gas coming out of the keyboard...

Unless 'the board' is censoring my posts about gyms and beer, Sirius, you need to calm down. Everyone is getting the same messages and they're NOT personal.

The board's having problems, and endless posts about censorship aren't helping, I'm sure.

Back to 'sending money to maintain the board' - that's agood thing right?

Good thing, yes. Difficult thing, apparently. But good thing.

We have SEVEN subscribers to the board so far, which at $2.50 each means we are getting in $17.50 a month. At the very minimum, we're going to have to raise that by a good thirty or forty dollars a month, before I'm going to be anywhere near being able to pay for the damn place again.

It'll be another couple of months before I can start on my credit card again - I'd be happy to paypal then. In the meantime, I can throw some cash or a cheque if needed.

Tom Coates

Still trying to avoid getting people to pay money direct to me. This way, we can keep everything very clean and organised. So far we've had 11 subscriptions - which brings us remarkably close to the $30 mark - which is about a quarter of the way to paying the current bills and about an eighth of the way from a Barbelith server. But it's a HELL of a good start.

REMINDER: You can subscribe $2.50 a month via payal by clicking: DONATE $2.50 a month to Barbelith Board maintenance. OR, you can click here if you're feeling really generous: DONATE $5 a month to Barbelith Board maintenance.

How do you older members shut down all criticism?
enquiring minds want to know!
I want to know, is "lith a forum for self stroking or free speech?

I already answered that question, too. You seem to ignore answers contrary to your own worldview. That's not healthy.

The answer to your question is: They do so by arguing you into oblivion, and at times being so condescending towards you that you feel like you've just shit on somebody's pancakes.

They do not do so by "locking you out of threads". So, again, I challenge you: Look up the technological backround. Figure out the possible causes of the error message.

Then come and scream about censorship.

And it's happened to all of us. I've recreated my account three or four times, each time leaving a trail of temporarily inaccessible threads.

Why didn't you ask the community?

I quote MC Hawkings (paraphrased, of course, for the situation at hand): "If you want to have that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick in the mash potatoes,".

This is probably a dumb question, but how can you tell Paypal that you are not from the US?

Tom Coates
09:31 / 15.10.01
It's quite easy actually. You just have to go to the register page and at the top you'll see a link saying "switch to International Account Registration". Click on that and the process will start...

QUESTION: DO PEOPLE WANT ME TO POST WHO HAS DONATED TO THE BOARD SO FAR OR DO WE WANT TO KEEP THIS INFORMATION PRIVATE?

if i get this right i have to wait for my next credit card bill before i can start using paypal... right?

I'm sort of feeling my way at present, but I don't think so. You need your verification number, which is on the back of your credit card, on the extreme right, alongside your cared number (repeated from the front).

Tom Coates
10:25 / 15.10.01
Nope. I'm afraid that's wrong too...

Basically what happens is that when they charge you for the initial $1 to test your card, that amount is billed to your credit card as PAYPAL #### (with the #### being the authentication number).

You have to use that number to activate your account.

But you don't actually have to wait to get that number - if you used a debit card you can pop into your bank and check your recent transactions, and if it's a credit card, you can ring up and check it. Doesn't take long at all... I got my account up and running by popping into barclays about three days after I set up the account and getting the number off the nice lady...

I don't give a shit.

I would just feel comfortable if Paypal paid more than lipservice to the idea of people from somewhere other than the United States wanting to use it's services, but then we had to wait six or seven years for yahoo.co.uk so...

all paypal problems aside... cmon folks, over 1000 users and only 7 peeps with c/c willing to use it?

Edit- I should also explain that the whole go-get-the-number thing ONLY applies if you want to donate more than $100. Anything less than that, they are covered for with you submitting a billing address for the card. So even if there's a restriction on setting up a standing order before you get the code, you can still donate.

I'm such a technospaz. So we don't need this four-digit number? Because if we do I will hang around until my next bill comes, then go from there.

Having said which, I may actually be signed up already. Tom?

We're now up to TWELVE subscriptions at $2.50 and one at $5 which is cool.

This means that we're getting in roughly $35 (before all of paypal's little fees) - which is a quarter of the way towards the horror of the bandwidth bills....

Tom Coates
08:34 / 17.10.01
We're now approaching $40 a month. If you have yet to sign up you are a very bad person.
