Funny, I was thinking about if a film of this would work after reading it recently...

Apparently someone thinks so. It seems that.... Joel Scumacher is set to direct? backed by Francis Ford Coppola's company? And Colin Firth is desired.. ?

Sorry for the sketchy details.. but...

On the face, that sounds like the most terrible film ever.

A book that's not bad in context that would fall flat presented in modern terms.

A washed-up director as producer.

The most shite major director working.

Where's the promise there?

I know, it sounds ultimately scary. And I can't see it working (I mean.. I could...perhaps.. but Joel? Really?)

And yet I find myself - through some morbid fascination - wanting to see what happens...

Apparently Brad Pitt is being considered for the role of Dean Moriarty...

Always thought they should have filmed "On the Road" with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. It was their Road movies that inspired it, right?

Anyway, Billy Crudup and Brad Pitt are set to star and I think they're fairly good choices. Plus, I know Russel Banks was hired to write a screenplay for it back in 95 or 96, and I daresay he would write a pretty kick-ass version. Whether or not they'll use his draft, I don't know...

Actually, I believe gridley's referring to the legendary "The Road to .. Fuck It Man, Let's Just See Where We End Up", wherein the producers became content that *ANY* Bing & Bob "Road to.." picture would get good box office and did away with such necessities as writing a script, booking studio time and so on, instead simply getting a 16mm camera and filming Hope, crosby and Dorothy Lamour cruising around in a big, shiny car, checking out sleazy jazz clubs, drinking too much and cracking wise.

However, the production team's arrogance failed to pay off, and the obscene mess of a film that resulted immediately bombed and was quickly withdrawn from the screens, ending the careers of all who were involved in the travesty.

Legend has it though, that some mixed up freaks actually enjoyed the picture, praising it as a "vision of total freedom" and basing a whole new mode of literary endeavour upon it. Kids, huh?

i'm sure i saw that movie one late Sunday night in '92. Dorothy Lamour kept flashing her tits at the screen and Bing Crosby was smoking hash through his pipe. "Smoking." Hope was heard to say.
