Monsters, Inc.

Just saw this tonight and wondered what everyone's view of it is. Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it. It was almost toothachingly cute at times ("Kitty!") but all in all I thought the writing was just as smooth and cohesive as the eerily crisp animation. And man, the animation. The hairs on Sully's body put the Final Fantasy stuff to shame. A great flick to take the wee ones to, especially when current paranoia practically begs both parents and kids to have their nightmares defanged. Or rendered in cuddly, fuzzy Disney style.

Opinions? Remarks? Dirty jokes?

Yeah, I saw it yesterday and had a big goofy grin on my face for about an hour afterwards. Beautiful stuff, thoroughly entertaining, easily up to the Pixar standard (though Lasseter didn't direct this one, which was disappointing).

Highest recommendation.

On the other hand, FINAL FANTASY was rubbish. Utterly dull and charmless.

Couple o' questions.

Is it suitable to take a 3 year old to?

Was there a Star Wars trailer before it, and if so, how was it?

Zoom.

Hard to say, Zoom. There are some minor scenes when the fear on Boo's face is very real. But it's extremely cute and the character of Sully is the perfect protector monster. Use your judgment but I'd say if they're tough enough to see the Lion King or the trees in the Wizard of Oz, then Monsters Inc should be just fine.

And yeah, the Episode II teaser was in front of mine. It looked so-so. Just some hyperventilation by Vader and shots of characters we've already met in Ep 1. Ho hum.

>>>Is it suitable to take a 3 year old to?<<<

I think so - the monsters are pretty unthreatening. There's one bit when the big blue furry one, Sully, make some scary roaring faces but for the most part he's just a big cuddly teddy bear. If your kid enjoyed Toy Story or A Bugs Life, s/he should be fine with this.

Zzzzzz....

You hear Vader breathing and see some random special effects shots. Looks dull, didn't even raise an eyebrow. I officially Do Not Care About Star Wars any more.

As for Star Wars... it's time to worry when they have to recall the actors cause there's not enough story!!!!!!

Hey... I thought the StarWars railer was the best trailer in the batch...

Monsters INC. was quite fun... Not as strong as TOY Story though. Couldn't get bast the Billy Crystal voice, and I thought SHREK was funnier. Still... a great time... almost walked out of the theater with the life sized model of Wezousky... the little green dude.

Talking animation, I've just watched Osmosis Jones. And loved it.

Take your basic buddy cop movie, add all the usual, formulaic ingredients then turn it into a cartoon, set it inside Bill Murray's body and relentlessly rip the piss out of the genre. The animation is excellent, taking the current Disney style of computer-aided hand-drawn scenes, and the writing is sharp and clever. It easily ranks alongside Shrek and Cats & Dogs as one of the best mainstream films to come out this year.

Thank the gods for region 1 DVD players and friends with children.

The bits with the dogs were shit. The cats fucking ruled. As a movie aimed mainly at kids, rather than the 50/50 approach of yer Toy Storys, it did its job admirably.
