What we need is a British Independent Genre Cinema.
Britain has been lacking in production strength for years, with only a handful of tried and tested Brit flicks, with which to hit a world (American) market. To be honest though, these films are rather awful and make me ashamed of our Film Industry.
There are several message boards concerning the casting and making of films, with people debating what will happen when a blatantly British concept is brought forward to the eye of the Hollywood grinder. (Hellblazer anyone?)
Films such as Acion Mutante, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Dellamore Dellamorte, City of the Lost Children, Kingdom (tv) and The Vanishing (original) demonstrate the fine standard that can be achieved with cinema, if a non Hollywood route is taken. Britain is capable of making Great films in teh genre market, just take a look at teh early Hammer output, especially the Quatermass Films, and in fact the original broadcasts. We are talking films with incredible imagination and content, inspirational stuff. Just look at the ideas behind Quatermass and the Pit.
Before Australia became a cheap alternative to the Uk, we could boast soome of the best technical crews and support.
This is a rambling posting, which I hope will make some sense to my idea of taking a grip on the cultural leakage in cinema.
What do you think?

I think 90% of current British films made me want to puke blood.

The people in charge of handing out the government/lottery money should be beaten harshly.

There ARE people in Britian with ambitions to make films that aren't either braindead ripoffs of the last feel-good hit or sub-Ken Loach kitchen sink dramas.

I think they should get money.

Ching-ching..

Its all about money aint it, unless they chuck in some shitty "star" they wont get funding - I hadn't seen a cinema showing anything other than Hollywood mince until I moved to London...

but there does seem to be allot going on here in London, my flatmates away this afternoon to film a scence as a pervy scottish priest (typecast)

Did you know that the Film Council doesn't have any writers on it?

You should see my most recent contract. It's enough to make you write novels.

We suck.

<obvious cheap-shot>
Well that explains why the films they fund don't have any stories..

Money and writers, a rather peculiar pair of bed fellows.
To be honest the DV revolution that should be going on right now, would in effect level the question of funding.
It is easy to say that much of the cash is wasted in productions on explosions, cars, girls and bad A list actors, which in turn means that these films must gross to payback.
Kinda perverse.
The films I listed in the first posting can all be said to cost a fraction of what is spent on Hollywood comparisons. Instead Britain is lucky to get a Million quid which it has to spunk on faddish camera techniques and post production.
I point a finger at education and the rising tide of fashion to note that the intellects have left the industry.
We've got to entice them back
