Time for a Gaming forum?

It seems that one thing missing on the "Spectacle" subdivision is a computer/console gaming - board gaming - role playing gaming section.

I.E. - See the current thread on Majestic.

Would anyone else be interested in a dedicated gaming forum? I sure would!

Yup. Haven't we discussed this before though? If I remember right people had reservations of adding a gaming forum. I don't remember the details right now though.

I must have missed that.

Reservations based on what? It seems to me that there would probably be enough interest to generate some good discussion.

I haven't heard anyone proposing to kill the mostly ignored "Art and Design" forum for example, which is largely non-functional compared to the rest of the "Spectacle" forums. (Not that I'm in favor of that, BTW)

The thread that Lothar's talking about appeared in the Conversation a couple of months back, so it's been wiped.

In brief, the main points made against a gaming forum (IIRC) were that another addition to the Spectacle could throw the site completely off-balance and that anything that people feel the need to discuss regarding any aspect of gaming can easily be slotted into one of the existing forums (Head Shop, Laboratory, Conversation, Creation).

Since the Spectacle got split into seperate sections, the number of threads contained therein has rocketed. A lot - not all, not most, but still, a lot - of these haven't added anything to the site, explored any new avenues or fulfilled any useful purpose. It's almost as if there's a belief that if the forum exists we've got to fill it up with fluff.

Do we really need this forum? I mean, there's been a total of around ten threads about gaming in the last year, all of which have found homes. Obviously they've been deemed necessary by some, but I can see a new forum quickly being swelled with endless 'Top Five' threads.

There's also the mounting cost of the site to take into consideration.

By the way, there have now been at least three threads dedicated to Majestic.

Maybe we could have a forum dedicated to weight loss and shaving instead.

I have to say that I'm still not comfortable about the amount of discussion on the board about entertainment related stuff. I think a gaming forum would just compound the problem.[/LIST]

I think there's plenty of space in the existing areas. The point about "top 5 lists" is also a good one.

It doesn't seem to me that there would be enough threads specifically about gaming and nothing else to justify their own forum (although I could be wrong - maybe people are wanting to start them, and just don't feel they have an arena?)

How many regular gamers are there here, anyway?

Well I'm a gamer and I'd have to vote no for a gaming forum, there are plenty of other place on the net to talk about rpg's/ccg's/larps and computer games. (Usenet, through groups.google.com has tons of groups on the above)

The occasional thread however is quite welcome and usually fits in somewhere. People here are usually have a different perspective on the above.

But I agree that a forum would overbalence the board, and do bad things to bandwidth possibly.

(oh if you fancy talking about larps try www.pagga.com, friend of mine runs it)

I think entertainment talk's pretty good, actually - it's important to have discussions about it; I just think the problem is that it's pretty easy to get into the trap of "this sucks! no it doesn't, you fool!" kind of discussions, or talk of an equally facile bent. When issues are discussed, or non-namechecking threads started, they're good; it's just a bit difficult to corral conversation into something other than a one-par big-up to a particular artist on occasion.

OK, it seems that everyone is against this, which is fine.

My next question would be if someone wants to post a gaming related thread, what forum would it be appropriate to do so? It certainly isn't clear where these threads should go, in my opinion.

Perhaps the definition of one of the forums could be widened.

Someone suggested the Creation at some point. I think that would be appropriate. What's everyone else's view on that?

How about changing 'Comics' to 'Milk-smelling'?

Wherever it's appropiate? Conversation gets a lot of gaming type stuff...
