I tell you, the imdb is just the greatest. after i found my way to this link, i wound up on a piece of film art called Face Fucked 3; curious to see what info they could put in a movie like that, i clicked on "recommendations".

According to the databse, if i liked Face Fucked 3, I'll love Dave Matthews Band: Listener Supported.

What a shit list anyway...The Matrix??? Forrest Gump????? American beauty the 14th 'best' film in the world????

It surprises me there aren't more classic/foreign films... I suppose the list reflects the most popular movies, not the "best", by any sensible standard...

Forrest Gump indeed...

Don't slag off Die Hard though, it knows what it is and its good at it...

imdb is on whole a good site... I like the way new movies get reviewed straight away by someone obviously working for the movie's PR department

And features the phrase "Yippie-cay-ay, motherfucker!" - that and the fact that it's not Hudson Hawk make it a clear winner in the Willis oeuvre.

surprized to see such an obviously moronic list place Fritz Lang's M above metropolis...

132.

And is it just me or is The Shawshank Redemption a vastly overrated film. I thought it was ok, entertaining enough, if a bit sappy, but number 2 of all time? And, in the real world, it seems like everyone you go up to absolutely loves the film. What is wrong with the world?

127. And yeah, these people need to see some better movies.

I am stunned to discover that neither 'The Goonies' nor 'Uncle Buck' have made the cut.

I actually don't think the list is that bad. Sure, there's some films that clearly shouldn't be there, but when you consider the mass nature of the site, the fact that so many old and foreign films made it on is surprising. I think it's probably a stronger list on the whole than the AFI list, or some others I've seen.

Is it just some specific films that bother people, or the order, or something else?

eddie thirteen
05:31 / 19.04.04
For me, it's both, and the placement of Shawshank (as someone else noted) is probably the most galling. I mean, sure, it's a good movie and all, but in what universe is it better than -- well, take your pick.

164. Usual crap at the top. Okay Lord of the Rings were good, but not the best films ever. And Star Wars. First one crap except for Han Solo, second one was good, third one was shite. The rest are dead to me.

Big Labowski was one it. I love that. Just watched it again the other day. Not enough John Carpenter films on it though.

TeN
00:53 / 20.04.04
a meager 92

the reason the list is so obviously skewed in the general direction of sheer crap is that it is based on voted from the members of the site. I'm sure they get a lot of morons who truly believe that Toy Story 2 ranks among the 100 greatest films of all time.

PatrickMM
21:00 / 24.02.05
Also on this list, keep in mind the fact that it's based on number rankings. So, I would probably give Toy Story 2 an 8 or 9, even though it's not in my personal top 100. However, if everyone gives it the 8 or 9, that's enough to get it on the list. So, it inevitably validates films that would have a very strong, widespread appeal, and is going to cut down on films that a large contingent of people really wouldn't like. It's a far from perfect list, but if you watch something off it, it's probably going to be a pretty solid movie.

106. I can see how it was worked out, and the justification for using that method, but frankly a lot of these films are bollocks.

154. Um ... yes, there are some pretty strange things in there. But still, it's a wee bit better than the AFI Top 100 from 1998, which will probably make some of you spit blood.

Link to come ...

I've only seen 65. I think very few people will agree with this list because it's so democratic, there a mixture of so many different genres of films in there.

There are 58 that I've watched all the way through, but probably about 20 or 30 more that I've seen part of but didn't get to watch all of. That's what I get for going for girls with short attention spans.

134. I think the list would be less contraversial if instead of being called the IMDB Top 250 it was called the IMBD Most Popular 250 as I think everyone probably agrees, Most Popular is not even nearly the same thing as best.

Whilst on the the subject and apologies for the little bit of threadrot, does anyone else here find themselves strangely drawn to the IMDB messageboards knowing full well that there's going to be some (deliberately) retarded first post about a film followed by someone else rising to the bait and then a huge argument breaking out? I feel like Bill Hicks did when he was talking about COPS. I hate them all but I can't stop watching....

doglikesparky, my favourite threads on imdb are when they debate casting in forthcoming superhero movies. Too funny!
